Challenge: How to get a motorcycle safety story onto the windscreen
of avid riders?

"The goal is to educate riders – and reduce fatalities," comments Scott Shenk, Manager of
PennDOT’s Driver Safety Division. "This interactive site is 'alive' with rider stories," he adds.
Riders love the freedom of the road they get on a motorcycle. The website homepage gets
right to the point – it features a documentary with a compelling message about PA riders,
riding safely, and what happens when freedom is lost.
Riders share insights and experiences by submitting videos and answering these questions:
1. What’s the one thing every rider should remember?
2. Why did you start riding? Why do you keep riding?
3. Ever crashed your bike and lived to tell about it?
4. Lost a friend to a motorcycle crash? What happened?
5. What do you love about riding?

One recent Implementation Program project fueled this thought-provoking website with valuable statistics about
motorcycle crash risk factors in Pennsylvania. The “in your face” approach delivers a powerful message about
motorcycle safety. A key element is the “Risk Profiler.” Site visitors can calculate their chances for a fatal crash
by responding to questions about driving behavior, helmet usage, motorcycle safety training and more.
Though May is Motorcycle Safety Month, PennDOT takes this theme seriously all year round. Visit the site today
and check back often for new messages and rider stories. Spread the word!
