Now subtract the 10 -8 = 2 Then add the 2 back with the 4 you took out of 14 You get the answer 6. These are the instructions my niece in 1st grade follows to solve the 14 - 8 = 6. This is how the teachers at her (redacted) school have to teach math. It is nonsensical. It has no forward progression -- i.e. it will serve them good in the next level class. It follows absolutely no educational principle. I am astounded that you call yourself an educator for allowing this to happen and to be a proponent. Perhaps those teachers who said they favor the new standards favor them because the standards are step-by-step and those teacher no longer have to put in the effort to teach! The teachers I have talked to, I am a certified Secondary Social Studies teacher, despise the standards. This needs to stop. My niece goes to (redacted) to get assistance with math. They teach her using valid educational principles, sound education theory and usable techniques. As my wife and I are planning on having children, I pray you will reverse this dumbing down of education and return to common sense; otherwise I will have to home-school my children. 22 CHANGE THE CONVERSATION 23 Kansas Education 24 College and Career Ready College and Career Ready means an individual has the academic preparation, cognitive preparation, technical skills, and employability skills to be successful in postsecondary education, in the attainment of an industry recognized certification or in the workforce, without the need for remediation. 25 Kansas College & Career Ready Standards ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ Math English Language Arts History, Government and Social Studies Science English Language Proficiency Handwriting Theatre Arts And more as they come up for review 26 Pieces to the Puzzle •Career and technical education (CTE) •Senate Bill 155 •Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) •Individual Plans of Study 27 State Summative Assessments in Math and English Language Arts Transitional assessment in 2013-2014 Based on the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards Developed by CETE at KU 2014-2015 and Beyond Developed and administered by CETE at KU Features will include: Constructed response Technology enhanced Adaptive at the section level (not item) Multiple choice 28 *IPS = Individual Plan of Study 29 Proficient What % of Kansas students meet grade level proficiency, and ready to move to the next grade level?
