Baccalaureate Interdisciplinary Project
Science - Exemplar 2
Grade: B
“The impact of pandemics; past, present and future”
Science Exemplar 2 (B Grade)
Proposal
The outline is extremely detailed, the candidate has written a clear account of how
he sees his project developing.
His justification for choosing the project is clearly explained and its relevance to
current health issues highlighted.
The broad contexts of citizenship and sustainability were selected.
Opportunities to access a range of learning environments included a pharmacy and
the virology department of a university. The candidate has a clear understanding of
the Interdisciplinary nature of the IP and the importance of seeking contacts to help
in his research.
He is aware of what activities in his project will lead to the development of specific
skills. There is no comment from him about his existing strengths and weaknesses in
these skills.
The assessor comments are full and documented in an amended form which allows
comments on each individual section.
All grade C and A criteria were met by the student in this area.
Plan
The candidate has set out his timescale plan in detail and has supported this with a
Gantt chart. It takes into account holidays and builds in time for negotiation and to
practice presentation.
Research methods are outlined on the Gantt chart and are an expansion of the
original project proposal in that much more detail is given.
He has identified 2 contingencies for potential problems which are adequate
The assessor comments are very supportive in highlighting the need for having
achievable timescales considering the student is also doing 5 Advanced Higher
subjects.
All grade C and grade A criteria have been met at this stage.
Presentation
The candidate chose the setting up of a web site in collaboration with a virology
professor as his presentation. As this was not live yet he also gave an oral
presentation of his findings.
The assessor comments highlight that this form of presentation did not come
naturally to the student and that further development of interpersonal communication
would have allowed him to give his project depth in the use of people as a resource.
This aspect failed to achieve the grade A category in this section.
Evaluation
The candidate’s evaluation gives a candid account of the research process that has
been undertaken. He provides an honest account of the difficulties encountered
especially in his management of his academic commitments.
The assessor comments indicate that the skilful use of communication and
presentation methods did not allow a grade A to be awarded in this area.
Self Evaluation
This was a good self evaluation, with the student indicating evaluation of his
strengths, areas that have developed and what he would like to do in terms of further
development. He also considers how he has responded to feedback by mentors. It
clearly demonstrates that he has grasped the purpose of self development.
All grade C and grade A criteria were met in this stage.
This IP was given the overall grade B. It could be considered as a ‘High’ B in that it
only falls short of a grade A in 2 areas.
