Study Strategies By: Ms. Freeman Check your study skills O I set a positive mood for my studies and schedule a productive time to study, find a less distracting space, etc. O Choose one of the following: O 5-Always O 4-Most of the time O 3-Half of the time O 2-Sometimes when I think of it O 1-Never I vary my study activities to include not just reading, but also group discussions and hands-on work. O 5-Always O 4-Most of the time O 3-Half of the time O 2-Sometimes when I think of it O 1-Never I organize and centralize notes and assignments, both in a notebook and in a folder on my computer. O 5-Always O 4-Most of the time O 3-Half of the time O 2-Sometimes when I think of it O 1-Never Each week I dedicate a short time to review my notes and assignments, and then evaluate my progress. O 5-Always O 4-Most of the time O 3-Half of the time O 2-Sometimes when I think of it O 1-Never Before each class or study session I review the assignment and my notes. O 5-Always O 4-Most of the time O 3-Half of the time O 2-Sometimes when I think of it O 1-Never After each class lecture, as quickly as possible, I review and organize my notes. O 5-Always O 4-Most of the time O 3-Half of the time O 2-Sometimes when I think of it O 1-Never After studying a unit, I transfer what I have learned into my own words and examples. O 5-Always O 4-Most of the time O 3-Half of the time O 2-Sometimes when I think of it O 1-Never I mark what I do not understand, and seek alternatives (teacher help, peer help, websites, etc.) to help. O 5-Always O 4-Most of the time O 3-Half of the time O 2-Sometimes when I think of it O 1-Never I separate out vocabulary and concepts that are new to me, define them on note cards, and talk about them in study groups. O 5-Always O 4-Most of the time O 3-Half of the time O 2-Sometimes when I think of it O 1-Never I reward myself for assignments well done. O 5-Always O 4-Most of the time O 3-Half of the time O 2-Sometimes when I think of it O 1-Never Add up your score O 45-50 points- Your study habits reflect excellent strategies! If your grades don’t reflect them, talk to your teacher or study with someone from your class. O 40-44 points- Your study habits reflect excellent strategies. Review one subject and one item at a time. Make time in your day to review material. O 35-39 points- You may have some good habits, but there is room for improvement. Select one particular question and focus on improving that one. For example, time management and place. O 30-34 points- There is room for improvement. Get the most out of your study strategies. Make time everyday to review or look over material. The more you look things over, the more you will remember! O Below 29 points- Come up with a study strategy that will work for you. If that one does not work, then just try another one Ask teachers, or peers, for help studying, or coming up with strategies. Study Habits O Take responsibility for yourself O You need to recognize priorities, time, & resources O Put first things first O Follow up on priorities and try not to get distracted from your goals O Discover when you study best O Morning, afternoon, or evening? O Find a space where you can focus and be productive, especially for your most difficult study challenges. O Think of everything as a win-win situation O When you contribute your best to class you will benefit, you can help other students, and you may surprise yourself O Your grade is also a reflection of this as well O Look for better solutions to problems O If you don’t understand the material, consult with the teacher, a tutor, a classmate, or a study group. O Challenge yourself! How are you going to study? O Think about your schedule and when you have time to study O Pick a place in your home, or classroom, where you will not be distracted O When in doubt, ask questions!
