The following provides you with a suggested plan on how to deliver this lesson. You are encouraged to take a flexible approach and modify this lesson and its timings to suit the needs and abilities of your students. 1. Run a class board game competition (80 minutes) Assessment The Assessment rubric should be discussed with students in the early stages of this unit. You may make changes to this rubric in line with the lessons you decide to cover. Information and Communication Technology (ICT), media and social media The use of ICT, media and social media is encouraged in this unit. See ICT, media and social media opportunities for more information. To prepare for this unit, engage students by organising a board game competition. Students can be invited to bring their own board games from home or they can play using the board games provided by the school. The class can work in teams or individually and can focus on one board game or a range of board games to determine the class winning team or individual. If possible ask students or have others take photos of the board games being played. 2. Discuss board games (20 minutes) Run a discussion with students about the board game competition they participated in. If possible show, on interactive whiteboard or projected on a data screen, images of the board games that were played. Student prior knowledge Have some familiarity with board games. In the class discussion about the students experiences, focus on the following questions: WALT - We are learning to... • What game(s) did they play? Did they play in teams or as individuals? Discuss our experience playing board games. • What was the objective(s) of the game(s) they played? WILF - What I’m looking for... • What did they like and dislike about the game(s) they played? I can discuss with others and answer questions about the board games I played. • How many students were new to the games they played? For those who played for the first time was it easy to pick up the rules? TIB - This is because... Knowing about board games we have played will help us understand how we will build our Western Sydney Wanderers board game. • What were some of the features of the board game(s) they played? Prompt discussion by asking them about the shapes and patterns on the board, its colours and dimensions, game pieces or tokens used, the flashcards (if any), penalties, bonuses and rules of the game. western sydney wanderers Scoring for Fun Mathematics Years 3 and 4 30 teaching and learning plan 3.
