Connecting media literacy to health-related issues such as obesity, substance abuse, self-esteem and sexuality, Dr. David
Considine has worked with health departments throughout the country, providing training and curriculum development for
groups like Arkansans for Drug- Free Youth and the North Carolina Governor’s Institute on Alcohol and Substance Abuse.
This webinar will reference best practices developed by ONDCP. This webinar will explain the impact and influence media
messages can have on children and adolescents, both positive and negative; the role media literacy has been shown to play in
helping young people detect and reject media messages that encourage, condone, glamorize and normalize at risk behaviors
including substance abuse; the broader role of media literacy beyond the 'protectionist paradigm'. Participants will respond to
and interact with presenter, Power Point slides and numerous video clips.
