NEW SUMMER SCHOOL CLASSES
Times and Grades for These Classes are Listed in the Catalog BOOK CLUB –ENRICHMENT Students will be able to choose from a variety of chapter books as well as participate in book club chats and fun reading activities. Keep the reading going this summer by signing up for book club! CUPCAKE /COOKIE DECORATING Students will be have an opportunity to try different icing tips & tools while learning basic cupcake & cookie decorating techniques. They will also get a chance to eat their tasty creations. FLAG FOOTBALL Students will indulge in the basic fundamentals of the game. Each day will focus on a different position, giving all students a chance to try out a new position. Some rules will be learned and good sportsmanship will be stressed. All drills will be fun, with little or no contact, and scrimmages will be flag football style. HAND SEWING CREATIONS Learn the art of hand sewing! Students will learn useful skills such as sewing on buttons, mending garments, and multiple hand sewing stitches. They will have the opportunity to pick out several sewing projects to complete and they will be given the chance to create a project of their own. OUTDOOR GAMES It's time to get outside and get active! Throughout this class, we will be playing a collection of games that could be played in your backyard, including a variety of tag and team sports as well as some crazy versions of typical lawn games. Let's have some fun learning new games and getting some exercise! READING ADVENTURES Is your child excited about reading! Each day will start with an opportunity for students to listen to a story read to them. They will then have the opportunity to sit & free read in a quiet environment. Comfy chairs & soft music will allow students to get immersed into the books that they choose. Students will be able to use the school library or bring books from home. This is an opportunity for your child to read with few distractions. READING & WRITING ‐ ONLINE Using online platforms such as Google Classroom, this class intended to support students who have been recommended for reading & writing, but cannot attend the class. Students will read a variety of texts together & participate in online discussions & assessments. Students will be held to timely deadlines, but within a flexible framework. READING BUDDIES Each student will be paired up with a 4K or 5K student in the Tot‐time/Tot‐Sports, Kindergarten Readiness or Express class. Students will have the chance to read aloud to their reading buddies and create art projects. RIVER STUDIES ADVANCED This is a more advanced level fishing & environmental studies class that builds on foundational skills provided in River Studies. Students will spend more time with professionals in the world of angling & will be given more opportunities to expand their fishing experiences. The class will learn to make their own baits to use & keep, do some advanced casting, & visit new fishing areas. More than half of our days will be spent out in the field with 8 bus trips. PARENTS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR TRANSPORTATION TO FISHING SPOTS ON FRIDAYS. SCRAPBOOKING WORKSHOP This workshop is a chance to practice what you have previously learned about scrapbooking. Students will be provided with paper, stickers, stamps and many different tools to create many scrapbook pages. Students are responsible for bringing pictures to class every day to scrap. The workshop will include one‐on‐
one assistance as needed. STORYBOOK CREATOR THEATRE Students will get a chance to be the star in their book! They will work in groups to write a script and create their own characters. After they have finished their script, they will act out the play and take pictures of their scenes along the way. The script will become the text of the book and the illustration will be the pictures taken of the kids acting out the play. Each student will bring home a hardcover book with their groups creation. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?  Katie, Amy & Laurie have different ideas on what to play at recess & can’t agree on what to play. What would you do?  It is time to line up to go inside after recess. Daniel is first in line, but Julie cuts in front of him. What would you do?  Tanya is having a birthday party. She keeps telling her friend, Mary, that she is not invited because you were talking to that new girl. What would you do? Students will develop skills for solving everyday problems with their peers through role playing & games. It will make the students more prepared to deal with small problems in an efficient & effective way that will strengthen their friendships both inside & outside of the classroom. YOU BE THE JUDGE Students will be lawyers, witnesses, and judges as they participate in mock trials based on characters from fairy tail and children’s literature. You decide whether characters are guilty or not! Students also use real cases to determine if they agree with actual judges. Students will also learn strategies for productive group work. Woodland Classes Time Change
This year most Woodland classes will start at 8:30 am. In previous years, the start time for classes was 8:00 am. We will still be offering the following class choices from 8:00 am to 8:30 am. Limited space will be available. Fun with Music – Entering Grades 4K & 5K Games Galore – Entering Grades 1‐4 Group Work Exercises – Entering Grades 5‐9 PLEASE NOTE: If your child is registered for bussing to summer school, there is no need to register them for the 8:00 to 8:30 am class. We will manually add them to the correct class for their grade entering.
