Propaganda is any type of writing that is written with the intention of persuading people to
support a cause. It is aimed at trying to influence an audience instead of giving out fair
information. In fact, propaganda sometimes only presents some of the facts. Or it may be
written in a way that produces an emotional reaction. This is one way of keeping people from
thinking sensibly.
People or groups who use propaganda want to persuade others to agree with them.
However, it is not always negative. Think about signs that try to encourage people to vote or
report crimes to police. These are also considered propaganda.
1. Which of these answer choices best fits the examples of propaganda listed in the
passage?
A commercials that tell people to complete the census
B. a company's dress code in an employee handbook
C. news stories that discuss both sides of every issue
D. a textbook chapter about the Revolutionary War
2. Which of the following statements best describes the organizational structure
used in this passage?
A. The author compares propaganda to other forms of writing.
B The author defines the meaning of the word propaganda.

Michael Jackson’s Thriller is the best-selling album of all time. It has sold 110 million albums
around the world since its 1982 release. Almost 30 million of those were sold in the United
States alone. There are a variety of reasons that could explain why Thriller was such a hugely
successful record.
Some say that the music video for the album's title song brought so much attention to the
album. During that time, most music videos were short visuals to go along with songs. The
video for the song “Thriller” was a 14-minute-long movie. The costumes, make-up, and dancing
it included forever changed music videos. After "Thriller," other artists began to try to tell stories
with their music videos.
The other videos from the Thriller album for songs like “Billie Jean” and “Beat It” broke
barriers of their own. Before these videos were played on MTV, the music channel didn’t really
play videos by artists of color. Their rise in popularity opened the door for artists of all races to
have their videos shown on MTV.
Others say the mixture of musical styles on Thriller accounts for its success. Jackson
blended pop, rock, dance, and ballads for in making of this album. There was essentially
something that would appeal to almost any music lover on Thriller.
3. Essays and news stories are often organized by cause and effect. According to
this passage, which of these contributed to the success of Michael
Jackson's Thriller album?
A. MTV’s rising popularity
B. a rich target audience
C. exceptional song writing
D creative music videos
