Colorado Garden Manager
Warm winters and wet springs are a
gardener’s best friend, and never underestimate
the ingenuity of a Colorado Apartment
gardener: those have been the clearest lessons
I’ve learned as the Garden Manager of the
Colorado Community Garden for the past year
or so. I’m not a particularly good gardener,
myself. I come from a colder climate — I grew
up in Northern Virginia, just across the Potomac
River from Washington, DC) where the growing
season doesn’t start until the middle of May. It
was quite an adjustment to learn that I could
plant my tomatoes as early as March here! And
even more of a shock to learn how quickly a
well-watered garden can shrivel up in the heat
of the Austin summer.
Before Austin, my fiancé Cody and I had limited experience gardening. We had a
few container plants when we lived in Washington, DC, tried and failed to coax
vegetables out of a shade-covered side yard in New Haven, CT—where I went to
graduate school—and even tended a few gardens as WWOOFers (World Wide
Opportunities on Organic Farms) in South America. But this plot has proven to be our
most rewarding gardening adventure yet.
It is an incredible luxury, as an apartment dweller, to have the space to grow
lettuces, beets, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes and even watermelon just a few steps from
your front door. And the comradery we have found with our fellow gardeners has been
fantastic. While we clearly have some true experts in the mix (you know them by the
neat, orderly arrangement to their plots, their vertically towering bean poles and
bountiful harvest), many of us are figuring out this gardening in Texas thing together.
And that is where the true fun lies—in experimenting, not being afraid to fail, and
getting to spend a few quiet moments watering your 10x10 piece of earth once a day.
If you are ever walking by and see someone in the garden, say hello! Come in and
ask for a tour! Most of us gardeners enjoy the opportunity to show off the fruits of our
labors. =)
