PURPOSE FOR GRANTS: Grants will support activity designed for Detroit males from ages 11-18 who are African American or Latino, and who have something in common such as school, neighborhood, faith community, special interests or talents, etc. Funded activity must take place outside of regular school time. Exceptions must be supplemental to the schools normal curriculum such as a school-wide contest which promotes reading and literacy. Activity must take place within the City of Detroit, ideally in one of the six Good Neighborhoods that are part of The Skillman Foundation’s Good Neighborhoods Program. Applications for projects outside the neighborhoods but in Detroit will be accepted. Youth themselves may apply for the grant, though adults must be present when the funded activity takes place. Grants will support reading, improved literacy activities and relate to the increase of graduation rates among the youth. This may include reading circles, book clubs, group tutoring and mentoring, data gathering, planning, creating materials, obtaining training, and other communal efforts and activities. Youth MUST be involved in such activity. The priorities for funding are youth engagement and activity which is specifically appropriate for the age (11-18) and culture (African American or Latino) of male participants. GRANT WILL NOT SUPPORT: Grants are not for individual service provision. Capital campaigns, endowment funds, fundraising, and purchase of land or buildings. Lobbying or political activity. Activity carried out for religious purposes. Activity which took place or began before the date a grant was awarded (around the 14 th of the month), or for any costs incurred before the award date. The internal needs of an agency/organization or supplantation of existing funds. Pay, benefits, or professional training for staff. Purchase of durable equipment (e.g. computer) or unusually expensive materials, supplies, or project equipment. Stipends given to reward participation. Costs of “recording” project activity. OTHERWISE, GRANT FUNDS MAY BE USED to cover a wide variety of costs which might be expected for any specific activity and are in proportion for the size of this grant. This could include project materials and equipment, feeding participants, transportation, entrance fees, skilled service, venue fees, as well as the out-of-pocket expenses of volunteers involved in the project. ELIGIBILITY: Detroit local and grassroots organizations. Not individuals. Not government, elected, or political entities. Not an organization or business operating for profit. Applicant organizations need to be operating on a not-for-profit basis, but DO NOT NEED to be incorporated or have tax-exempt status (501C3). Organizations receiving grants must be working within Detroit and in ways specific to a given community. Informal groups, and youth or adults may apply. They may be carrying out their first activity. They may assign themselves a name for the purpose of applying if they don’t have a previous identity. Organizations are eligible to receive grants even if they currently have a Community Connections or other grant handled by Prevention Network, or a grant directly from The Skillman Foundation. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS FOR APPLYING: Grants will be awarded in amounts up to $1000. A given organization may apply for additional/repeat grants once a previously funded project is complete and reported. A limited number of larger grants, up to $2,000, will be available for schools with the capacity to reach larger numbers of students. But most grants will be capped at the $1,000 level. Organizations may receive a maximum of 3 grants (totaling up to $3,000) from the grant program. Projects supported with this grant must be completed within six months. A report of the project must be turned in within a month from completion. The report includes brief narrative and a financial accounting with receipts. Prevention Network supplies the report form when grant checks are sent. Grant recipients may handle their own grant funds or use a fiduciary if they choose. No fees will be paid for fiduciary services. Applications will be accepted only on the grant form or an exact facsimile. Grant applications are due at Prevention Network by midnight the 22th of November 2013, and the 15th of the month from December 2013 through March 2014. They may be faxed or mailed to meet deadlines. Applications will be reviewed in December of 2013, and January, February, March, and April of 2014. A panel of area residents reviews applications and makes funding recommendations. Their recommendations are final upon agreement by Prevention Network Board of Directors. Funding decisions are announced and grant checks sent within 30 days of the deadline that it is submitted, in ordinary circumstances. Support letters are not necessary unless: a school will provide space, time, personnel or other project resource; a church, community center, or other such venue will be used; another organization is an essential partner in the project. Then a letter from the relevant spokesperson on letterhead should be attached to the application. PREVENTION NETWORK P.O.
