Vamps info!!
Nice one, Churchy!!....Received this nice e-mail from

Merton last week, just after the letter had gone out….thought you would all
like to read about “the young lad”!!
“I would like to commend the attitude of your third team on Saturday, after travelling
across London to be told there was no referee, unfortunately the appointed ref for our
fourth team cup game failed to show so the third team ref was taken, one of your players
offered to ref the game and did an excellent job without any bias, both teams respected
his decisions. The team and especially the young lad who refereed the game are a credit
to
your
club,
please
pass
on
my
thanks.”
Terry Baker; President, Merton FC

2nd XI v Norseman… Lost 1-2; Scorer; Knight
With the, ahem, pressure of the job proving too much for the management team of the last couple
of seasons, the 2's have been put in a difficult position, shorn of administration and players.
Amazingly, in view of such Spurs-like antics, Vamps produced their best display of the season despite
losing 2-1 to a well organised and technically capable Norsemen. Left short by numerous late dropouts and refuseniks, we nevertheless put in a real team performance. Unsurprisingly, the first 20
minutes was our downfall, as yet another new back-five took some time to settle in and Norsemen
took advantage of our lack of co-ordination to nick two easy goals. After that, however, we
outpassed and outplayed them for an hour either side of half-time and only bad luck and good
goalkeeping prevented us getting on level terms. We did have them in trouble after a fine move was
finished crisply by KNIGHT midway through the second half, and only our lack of fitness let them off
the hook towards the end as our intensity levels inevitably dropped. Still, a good team performance
from new boys and regulars alike, much assisted by a genuine team spirit not seen in the 2's for some
time. Plenty of reasons to be optimistic for the rest of the season if we continue to learn from our
mistakes. Special thanks to Jimmy Connolly for his valuable input.
3rd XI v Winchmore Hill…Lost 2-5; Scorers; ??
No Report from Churchy’s boys this week…standards are slipping!!!
4th XI v Broomfield 4th XI…Lost 1-2; Scorer; Harvey M
Not much to report this week – a poor result against a 10-man side which has cost us another 3
points. So, what happened? Well, we were in control for most of the first half (when it was 11 v 11)
and despite being presented with an untold amount of chances we failed to convert big time. Then
as if too make things even easier for us, one of Broomfield’s defenders decided to get himself sentoff after, for no obvious reason, fouling, verbal abusing and then strangling P. Graham. From that
point on we should have wrapped –up the game, but instead we panicked, making mistake after
mistake, and letting Broomfield take control. We went off at half-time with our heads down and the
score 0-0. The Health Iinspector, C. Osinaike, found a rat in our kitchen and gave us a bollocking for
playing like a bunch of muppets. So, we stepped out for the second half ready for action and then
suffered from group amnesia, forgetting everything that was said during the team talk as soon as
the whistle was blown. It didn’t take long before we got punished: a well taken free-kick from the
edge of the box and we were 1-0 down. We managed to equalise soon after, when M. Harvey flicked
in a header from a well worked throw-in, involving C. Osinaike and L. Green. As soon as we were
level, Broomfield raised their game, while we all fell off a cliff. With 10 or so minutes to go,
Broomfield took the lead after a soft-shot was spilled into the path of the opposition who duly
converted. They could have embarrassed us even further, after a shot from a corner was cleared off
the line with my face! Overall, a shocking performance and an even worse result.

7th XI v EBOG’s 6th XI….Lost 1-4; Scorer; Stavrinou
CEV 7’s started better than ever taking a 1-0 lead over Ebog 6’s with good passing to set up Nick
Stavrinou who slotted it pass the keeper. It stayed like that for a while until Ebog’s equalised ten
minutes before half time. After the half, Ebog’s stepped up another gear, which we found hard to
match. They went on to score three more goals, making the final score 4-1. What I am finding hard
this year is the lack of commitment from players who are picked but don’t even call you to let you
know they’re not playing, and also not having a regular squad each week anyway..enough moaning!!
Thanks to the guys that did turn up and gave their all, sorry the result didn’t reflect their effort and if
anyone knows of a goalkeeper!?!... ‘cos I am sh*t*!! (I’ve seen worse!! Ed)
8th XI v Old Parks 8th XI…Won 2-1; Scorers; Longworth, Harrington
A bit like watching the Arsenal! Vamps raced into a deserved 2-0 lead in less than ten minutes with
neat goals from the increasingly impressive Longworth and goal-a-match Harrington against a shellshocked Old Parks. A string of near-misses and fine saves from their inspired keeper frustrated the
Vamps and a moments lapse allowed Old Parks to pull one back before half-time. Lovely football
after the break from both young and less-young in the Vamps and more fine saves kept the score at
2-1, but it could easily have been a lot more! Great to watch though and special mention to MOM
Olusegun (Yinka), solid tackling against some hefty opponents twice his weight!!
