Hey how you doing
Can you tell me a bit about what you have to
do
So I’m in the story department, basically
what we do we’re the first people to kind of
visualise the film
Were there any funny processes that you
had to go through as a team?
A lot of us are sharing offices together so
you’ll be like dude, dude stand up and go like
this aarrrggghh you know like, okay oh hold
it. No no don’t move don’t move and then
we’ll draw each other. Like cool thanks dude,
like got it you know and what’s really great is
sometimes we’ll get together all in the same
room and we’ll just draw and we try to make
each other laugh. You’ll see somebody do
one drawing and you’ll go oaoahaoll what
about this, like ah that hilarious, what if he
had a hat on? And what if he had this?
So do you get new idea in these sessions
that then weren’t in the script at the start?
Yeah exactly, then we’ll move into the
computers. So I’ve drawn Mike a lot so I
thought it would be fun to show you how to
draw Mike

With uh Mike he’s got a nice big eye, so
that’s a nice big round eye and leave some
room down here for his mouth, nice big
smile right underneath his eye there.
We can do his legs now. His legs are kinda
two lines that kinda come down

Yeah and then his feet I really have fun with
it.. three little toes

And then let’s get a little arm, on the side
there so a little triangle and then uh let’s do
three little fingers on the side there just like
the feet. Yeah exactly. And then let’s have
him like waving at us so you wanna have a
nice big thumb on this inside there coming in
towards him and then you use three fingers,
so one, two, three.

Monsterizing?
Monsterizing is the way we stylise our

buildings for the monsters world.
Oh okay
We try to think, put on an Architect’s cap
and design it for monsters. Solve problems
that monsters would have
So you take a building that we would see
every day and arrange it for the Monster
World
Right so... some of the problem we might
face are things like.... the scale, monsters
come in all sorts of different size, big and
small. And so it’s important for us to design
the building for those different sized
monsters. And here you can see Mike and
Sulley in front of this door at the Scare
School.
Oh yeah you got the small and then I
suppose that would open as a full door as
well.
Yeah absolutely
In this film we get to see monsters that fly,
so we’ve created these little perches, up on
top where flying monsters could land and
walk into the top floor.
And we’ve even hidden, all through which is
a fun detail for us to design, was hidden
faces. Here’s the scare school and you can
see the dorm room windows on the dome
are eyeballs and the door down below is
actually a mouth.
Monster University is a very colourful film.
How do you use the colours and the light to
tell your story
Oh we carefully picked different colours for
different fraternities and sororities. Oozma
Kappa in particular is green; we wanted to
make sure it was Mike’s team.

We also have this fun thing were Mike is
coming in and out of light. There’s actually
this idea that monsters like to scare in the
dark... things happen that actually put Mike
and Sulley into a position of having to step
into this light and this is where we are really
using light to really be a scary thing for them
You don’t notice that whilst you’re watching
the film. About okay if it’s a good thing that’s
going on in their life then its light maybe that
they need light and that if its’ something
that’s more daunting, its dark. It’s amazing
I’ve got lots to learn.

This movie is set when Mike and Sulley are a
fresh faced eighteen years old and the team
here have created a Whole university of new
monsters to join a younger looking Mike and
Sulley.
CHARACTER IV
I’m here with Ricky and Jason and you guys
work a lot with the characters. Can you tell
me what you do?
Well these are the returning characters, we
have Mike, Sulley and Randal and the
challenging thing about Mike is that how do
you make an eye ball eighteen years old?
Some of the changes that we made are
we...you know that you put on weight as you
get older so we made him skinnier; we made
his legs and arms longer and his hands and
feet larger to make him like a puppy. And
even with all that done if you had a direct
comparison it wasn’t absolutely clear, with
Mike we ended up giving him braces when
he was younger and a retainer when he was
older.

So we did the same thing with Sulley. Skinnyed him up, saturated his colour, his horns
are blunter and shorter.
It’s not until you see them together, that you
realise how much they’ve changed.
That’s a perfect transition to Randal where if
you don’t have the A-B comparison
you probably wouldn’t realise
You can’t tell, so our big visual hook was
adding the glasses to him. When he takes
then off you see the squint.

We knew that squishy was underdeveloped
as a person or a monster as I should say. So
we looked immediately at gummy candies
We ate a lot of it too
One of the biggest and most strongest I
would say is Dean Hardscrabble
So we actually got, all the designers we could
all in a room and we sat around and we tried
everything we could imagine, she was a
butterfly, she was a bat, she was a snake,
she was a based on a moth at any given
time. It wasn’t until we came across this
giant centipede

We had an expert come in who deals with
venomous snakes and poisonous spiders and
dangerous insect, and he would hand hold
these things bare hand. But then when he
saw that we had the Scolopendra Gigantea
He legged it
He put on these big leather gloves, he had
long metal tongs. And he basically said this
thing is so dangerous that if you get bitten
There’s no hope
You will not die but you will wish for death

This place is amazing, it’s like a playground
There’s a chill out zone with games, table
football, everyone gets a scooter, there’s
characters from all the movies like Nemo,
Luigi from Cars. There’s all day, all you can
eat breakfast. You get to design cool stuff on
awesome computers. Drawing characters,
making models and everyone working here
gets involved in making the movie. From
acting out scenes for the story artist, coming
up with jokes or recording sound effects or
voices of the characters.

What was it like to get stuck into these
characters again?
Well you know it was kinda thrilling because
for me I really miss them. It’s been almost
like 12 years since we first met them and it
felt like second nature to get into them again
Really.. I think there is a little more to it than
that
It’s just like falling... I see the movie every
once in a while.. I miss this guys

I miss the whole reality that Pixar created

The characters that are there.. they are a
little bit younger now they are 18 now...how
are they different?
They come with different attitudes.. I am
going to be the greatest scarer that ever

I think it’s hard to pick one scene from

scene in which Mike and Sulley are bickering

Five and a half million, and each one has to
be animated in 3D for the final movie. So

really excited to be there except for Sulley.
Squishy is having the time of his life and he is

him out on to the dance floor and Sulley

bringing this to life, do you have to get
freaky on the dance floor yourself and go try
work it out?

different energy. Sulley is an interesting
character. He is very confident. He is a little
cocky, but he is probably not as comfortable
on the dance floor as some of the other
characters might be. So he had to have this
interesting balance of confidence but
reticence. So this version is what is in the
film. It’s the final lighting, so with the disco

because I love Pixar films and I am trying to
find out all I can about Monsters University
and the other things they are working on

Scariness is the true measure of a monster. If
you are not scary what kind of a monster are
you?
Needless to say they expect the same of
their students
It’s my job to make great students greater,
not make mediocre students less mediocre.

will be a final exam. Fail that exam and you
are out of the scaring programme
The thing is I am learning to be a bit of a
scarer myself. I have been working on my
scary stuff. Do you think I am going to make
it, or have or got any tips for me?
I would say you are not very good at being
scary at the moment.. in fact I would say you
are absolutely useless

Yes, you have to find stillness, and you have
to reach down into yourself and bring out

movies so amazing
Pixar, itself, as you know from snooping
around, is an incredibly creative place where
The ability to imagine has not been
forgotten. It’s such a great place to be
“Imagine a University.. where I can be
unique, in a family of thousands, where I
can love to learn and learn what I love”
