HEAD COACH
JAMES DOMINEY
This is year 17 for James Dominey in his role as head basket
ball coach at Valdosta State College, and while every year has
been different this one has the preseason earmarks of being unlike
any of the other 16.
Dominey and his staff are faced with a gigantic rebuilding job
this season as only one player from last year’s 16-10 club returns.
The top seven scorers and rebounders from that team are gone.
Only sophomore guard Mike Oxford, who played sparingly last
season and averaged 3.4 points a game, is back.
Last year’s recruiting season was obviously crucial, and
Dominey believes he signed some solid players with which to
rebuild. But he stresses the Blazers will be rebuilding, not
reloading.
“ Because we are losing so many veteran players, we recruited
primarily in the junior college ranks,” Dominey said. “ We had
to get that college experience in order to have a chance. But when
you go with players from a lot of different junior colleges, it
can take a while for them to begin playing together. It will take
a lot of hard work on everyone’s p art.”
Dominey learned early as a player that there are no shortcuts
to success. He was an outstanding prep player at Vienna High
School where he was team captain his senior season in 1962,
averaging 28 points a game and earning a scholarship to Nor
man Park Junior College.
He enjoyed two productive seasons on the junior college level
and went on to Oglethorpe University where he started for two
years for the nationally-ranked Stormy Petrels.
After graduating from Oglethorpe, he took a graduate
assistantship at Middle Tennessee State University where he earn
ed the master of education degree in 1967. One year of high
school coaching preceded his joining the Valdosta State staff in
1968 as an assistant. Three years later he became the school’s
fourth head coach.
In the 16 seasons which have rolled by since then, Dominey
and the Blazers have had many more good times than bad. There
have been only two losing seasons. Four Dominey-coached teams
won the old South Atlantic Conference title. His 16-year record
stands at 260-170, a winning percentage of .605 and an average
of more than 16 wins a year.
Improving that winning percentage will be tough. In addition
to the 16 conference games, the Blazers play Division I Georgia
on the road and talented intrastate Division II schools Colum
bus and Albany State. There are no breathers.
“ The Gulf South Conference is as tough a Division II league
as there is in the country,” he said. “ We have 16 of our 27 regular
season games against teams in our conference. The league has
great balance from top to bottom. Everybody is tough at home,
and the teams which are successful are the ones who can win
on the road.
“ We won’t be treated with much respect until we can prove
something to the other teams in our league. I hope by the time
January rolls around, we’ll be ready to be competitive against
a very tough conference schedule.”

1988 OUTLOOK
Coach James Dominey begins his 17th season at Valdosta
State in a position in which he has never been. After last year’s
16-10 finish, the Blazers return only one letterman for the new
year.
Gone are two all conference players and the entire starting
lineup from a year ago when the Blazers finished in a third
place tie in the Gulf South Conference race.
Dominey places great im portance on the 1987 portion of
the VSC schedule when the Blazers play 10 of the 27 regular
season games. Valdosta State picked up five junior college
transfers and recruited three freshmen to join lone returnee
Mike Oxford. Oxford played in all 26 games as a freshman,
averaging 3.4 points.
Michael Phillips, a 6-2 guard from Groveland, Fla., heads
the list of JC recruits. He averaged 20 points a game for Lake
Sumter Com munity College and was an all-Suncoast selec
tion. He dem onstrated outstanding leadership ability in the
preseason and was a unanim ous choice to captain this year’s
club.
Likely to join Phillips in the starting backcourt will be 6-0
point guard Lavell G arror from Mobile, who directed South
Plains (Texas) Junior College to a 25-6 season last year. G ar
ror is expected to provide solid play at the trigger position
which has been a weak link on recent Valdosta State teams.
Other JC transfers are 6-5 forward Tony Bates, who
averaged 10 points and 7 rebounds for D aytona Beach C om
munity College, 6-4 forward Ron Courtley, who averaged 16
points for M acomb (Michigan) Com munity College, and 6-7
center Chris Johnson, who averaged 10 points and 10 re
bounds for Brevard Com m unity College.
James McRae, who played for Brunswick Junior College
two years ago, has played tight end on the Blazer football
team the last two years and will join the basketball squad at
the end of the grid season. McRae is a 6-3 power forward
who averaged 11 points a game at Brunswick in his sophomore
season.
Two of the freshmen, 6-4 swing player Ronnie Gaines and
6-7 forward Daryl Green, led Bainbridge High School to a
25-2 record last season. Gaines averaged 17 points and 11 re
bound while Green scored 14 points and pulled down 12 re
bounds a game. The other rookie signee is 6-1 guard Lloyd
Clarke, who averaged 16 points for Gainesville (Florida)
Eastside High School.
W alkon freshman Travis Mackey, a 6-5 center, rounds out
the Blazer roster.
“ With so many newcomers it is im portant that we find the
right com bination as soon as possible,” Dominey said.
“ T h at’s why the early part of our schedule is so im portant.
W e’ve got to find out who we can count on before we begin
conference play in Jan u ary .”
The Blazers will play in four tournam ents before the new
year, including their own invitational in early December. The

schedule includes a trip to Athens to play Georgia. The con
ference slate begins at home on January 2 against last year’s
conference champion and national semifinalist Delta State.
Dominey thinks the conference will be tougher top to bot
tom than ever.
“ The league appears to be extremely balanced this year,”
he said. “ I think as many as seven teams have a legitimate
shot at the title. Because we have only one letterman return
ing I expect we will be put in the role of spoiler, but we aren’t
approaching the conference schedule that way. All I know
is, we’ll all be 0-0 on January 2 when the league race begins.”

A point guard with the tools to be a

points, 8 assists and 6 steals a game
while shooting 52 percent from the
field and 71 percent from the line ...
impressed his fellow players enough in

very strong inside player with outstan

defensive player when he reaches full

Dom iney’s Com m ents
“ Michael has great athletic ability, and
I think he can be an outstanding player
in our conference. Like all of our
players this year, he has to make the
adjustment to our level of basketball.
Once he does that, and he will, I think
he will be a very productive player.”
D om iney’s Com m ents
“ Lavell is a great team player with
outstanding athletic ability. That abili
ty coupled with the intensity he has on
the court will be a big plus for us. He
plays extremely hard. As a coach,
that’s all you can ask of a player.”

“ Tony, like all of our junior college
recruits, is a great athlete. The impor
tant thing is for him to find out his role
on this club, then go about fulfilling
it. There’s no question about his abili
ty. The leg injury has set him back, but
I expect him to be among our leaders
before the year is over.”
