White Buffalo Aboriginal and Métis Health Society
is a non profit society dedicated to the
advancement and promotion of health and social
well-being for Urban First Nations, Inuit and Métis
(FMI) individuals, families and community; on
local, regional and provincial levels. The goals of
White Buffalo are to:
1. Advance First Nations, Métis, and Inuit
peoples as decision makers in their health
and social wellbeing.
2. Strengthen capacity through program
development, direct service delivery and
relevant research initiatives.
3. Advocate for systematic transformative
change to improve the health and social
conditions of Métis, First Nations, and
Urban peoples.
4. Sustain and development meaningful
partnerships with other key stakeholders
and other relevant parties.
5. Take a leadership role in facilitating
collaborative approaches for planning,
service delivery and evaluation of Urban
FMI Health and Social programs and
services.
6. Build upon the gifts and wisdom of FMI
cultures to ensure that they are recognized
as valuable, distinctive and beautiful,
7. Promote pride in ancestry, history and
cultural reclamation.

Gift Givers Family Support
First Nations, Métis, & Inuit children, youth and
families are over-represented in the child welfare
system. Their numbers have been increasing over
recent decades.
How the program supports families.
The program manager works collaboratively with
MCFD in order to keep children safe and out of
care through strengthening of families by:
 Developing plans of care with families
involved with MDFD/SCFS
 Supporting children living with families
that are impacted by issues of violence,
addictions, generations abuse and trauma
to ensure they are kept safe.
 Improving the ability of the caregivers to
provide safe and nurturing homes for
children
 Offering group work with individuals and
families to increase parenting skills by way
of facilitating The Seven Sacred Teachings
Parenting Group; Respect, Truth, Honesty,
Humility, Wisdom, Courage and Love
Parenting Group. Topics are Wellness,
Parenting Styles & Boundaries, SelfEsteem, Communication, Abuse/Discipline,
Anger Management & Conflict Resolution
and Self-Care/Nutrition and Play.
 Working with families to increase parental
confidence.
 assisting parents to recognize and
understand abuse dynamics in order to
improve their parenting skills and
methods.
 Improving child and parent relationships
through life skills education supporting
parents with effective parenting strategies.

Gift Givers Family Support Services
The program offers a combination of group and
individual sessions to increase parenting skills
by understanding the impact of addiction, family
violence and generational trauma has on
individual’s ability to practice positive parenting.
The Seven Sacred Teachings Program is an
8 week parenting program that focuses on life
skills of wellness, parenting styles &
boundaries,
self-esteem,
communication,
abuse/discipline, anger management & conflict
resolution, self-care/nutrition & play.
Each
session focuses on parenting skills around one
of the Seven Sacred Teachings of love, truth,
honesty, courage, respect, wisdom and humility
in a group in a group format
The Women’s Empowerment Program is a
12 week women’s circle that allows women to
discuss the following topics in a safe, nonjudgmental environment and to empower the
spirit.
Topics include self-acceptance, codependency, boundaries, relapse prevention,
relationship violence, conflict resolution/anger
management, communication skills, grief and
loss, medicine wheel-life balance and selfidentity.

Children and Family Support Services
The Gift Givers Program Manager provides
prevention and early intervention services to
Aboriginal & Metis
families at high risk;
Implements and evaluates adequate, appropriate
individual, short-term and long-term programs
and services in the area of child welfare
prevention consistent with MCFD and other
delegated service providers.
The Program Facilitator, plans, develops and
delivers short term programs to groups whose
Aboriginal & Metis individuals have been
impacted by issues of violence, addictions,
generational abuse and trauma in the way of life
skills education in order to understand abuse
dynamics, improve confidence and promote self
advocacy.
Our services are free and are available to
anyone in the community.
