Mat Wheeler takes his first win of the Challenge
Round 3 of the GwynneSpeed Rally Challenge saw 6 crews travel to Cornwall to contest the TSH
Stages which was voted “Best Qualifying Round of 2015”.
This 2 day event offered crews 105 miles of fast, challenging stages and Ross Leach and unregistered co-driver Anthony Tilley set fastest first stage time. However due to the crew being
ineligible to score points, the 5 point “fastest first stage” bonus went to Julian Strong and Matthew
Roberts. An unfortunate problem at the split on Stage 1 saw Mat Wheeler and Hannah McKillop
take a stage maximum which put them out of the running.
Going into Day 2, Ross Leach and Anthony Tilley had a comfortable lead ahead of Ryan Gibson and
Simon Jones. However, Wheeler/Mckillop appealed their stage maximum on Stage 1 and got it
reduced to a 10 second penalty putting them very much back in the game.
Leach and Wheeler then battled it out throughout Day 2 and mechanical problems for Leach on the
last 2 stages saw Wheeler/McKillop take the win by just 5 seconds.
Despite a high attrition rate on the challenging 2 day rally, all of the Challenge crews finished and
therefore proving how robust and reliable these super fun cars are.
The £100 C2MotorsportParts.com voucher is awarded to Julian Strong and Mathew Robertsfor
“Most Miles travelled to get to a rally” as Julian had to travel from Swindon to Sheffield to collect his
family and then to Portreath and then do the whole trip again at the end of the event!
The next round is the Brawdy Stages on 17th July. Several crews have yet to play their Joker and so
this event may prove popular for bagging plenty of points.
