Why Run For Music?
Choir Alberta created Run
For Music as a fun and
easy way to help Alberta
choirs to raise funds for
themselves, and to support Choir Alberta programs. Run for Music
is designed to provide
choirs with a much higher
percentage of return than
most fundraisers, with 50
to 75 percent of the funds
raised returned directly to
the choir that raised them.
And, funds remaining after
event expenses are paid
go to support valuable
Choir Alberta programs
such as the Alberta Children’s Choir, Alberta Youth
Choir, and Choralfest.

RFM: a team fundraiser
While choirs build a team or teams that will walk or run a 5 or 10 km course, the whole
choir is involved in gathering support for the fundraiser. Teams can include anyone –
choristers, family members, or friends. All they need is to share the common of goal of
raising money for your choir. Pledges are made to the team (not the individual), and your
whole choir is encouraged to get involved in collecting pledges. Pledges can be collected
through your choir’s RaiseAThon page (which will be set up when you register your team)
or using paper pledge forms.
We are also encouraging your choir’s supporters to come out and cheer on your team, and
enjoy the pancake breakfast and entertainment that follows the run/walk in Sir Wilfred
Laurier Park. A limited number of brunch tickets will be available for supporters to purchase prior to the event online at www.albertachoralfederation.ca/runformusic.asp.
What is the Team Captain’s Role?
The Captain (or Captains - you can have two) recruits and registers your team, and engages your whole choir in supporting this fundraising effort. The Captain works with their
Choir Director to set an ambitious fundraising target, and serves as an example for the
team. Captains keep their team and choir updated on the progress made in meeting their
goal (which will also be displayed on the team’s RaiseAThon page), enter pledges collected offline into the team’s RaiseAThon page, find opportunities for the choir to promote
their team, and help maintain enthusiasm and support for the endeavor, including encouraging non walkers or runners to come to the event and cheer their team on.
The RFM Experience
Run For Music 2016 will
take place in scenic Sir
Wilfred Laurier Park in
the Edmonton River Valley. As you make your way
through the course, you
will be met by singers and
instrumentalists performing all sorts of music! The
course winds its way back
to the main stage where
pancake breakfast will be
served and entertainment
will be provided .
Setting Fundraising Targets
Your percentage of return increases with total pledges raised, so setting a
goal for fundraising makes sense. By allowing all choir members to
collect pledges, the potential for greater returns is increased.
Return percentages based on gross team pledges are:
•
•
•
•
up to $2500 receive 50% of funds
($2500 could be considered a team minimum goal)
$2501 and $5000 receive 55% of funds
$5001 and $7500 receive 60% of funds
over $7500 receive 70% of funds
Teams of 10 or more will receive a 5% bonus to their return
percentage.

Find a co-captain to help you along the way
p
Recruit team of walkers/ runners
Begin by creating a list of potential team members
who will make the cause their own, be good fundraisers, and will bring a fun and enthusiastic approach to
this initiative. There is no minimum or maximum number of people on a team and all ages and fitness levels
can participate.
Keep in mind that while mass emails may be convenient, personal invitations to join your team are even
better. Consider asking choir members to encourage
spouses, parents or friends to join the team. Ten team
members are included in basic registration fees, but
there is no limit on team size (see registration fees list
for cost of additional team members).
p
p
Ensure your team members are informed about how
close you are to your fundraising goal, and let them
know about individual/ group efforts that have been
successful in raising pledges. Say ‘Thank You’ often,
and keep letting people know that their help and enthusiasm are important.
p
Recruit Cheer Team supporters
The more people you have supporting this effort, the
more fun it is. For people who want to be involved, but
are not walkers or runners, coming out to the event to
cheer on their friends and share in the pancake breakfast (a limited number of brunch tickets are available
online) is a great way to be a part of the fun.
p
p
Create a team name. Be creative!
p
Register your team at www.raiseathon.ca/runformusic
p
Establish a timeframe for fundraising benchmarks
p
p
p
Provide your choir with support for garnering pledges
p
Distribute pledge forms to your choir.
Explain the role of each choir member can take in helping raise pledges for your RFM team. Be available to
answer questions people may have. Brainstorm opportunites for pledge-raising with your team
p Get your team to help generate ideas for opportunities
to promote the your RFM team (upcoming concerts,
meetings or other events where possible sponsors may
gather).
p
Keep the team and choir informed, and RFM front of mind
Ensure choir and team members return their pledge
sheets and give funds collected to you no less than
3 days before the Run. Make sure they have all their
cash and cheques noted on the forms, and enter them
into your team’s Raise-A-Thon page by 11:59 p.m. on
Apr 29.
Remember the form must have the choir’s full name,
as well as the name, address, and phone number and
email of the person who collected the pledges. This
same information is required from sponsors. Charitable
receipts will be issued for donations over $25, and will
be sent by email.
Engage your full choir in the Run For Music fundraiser
Explain to your team and your choir why funds generated by this effort are important. Help team and choir
members understand what your choir uses these kinds
of funds for, and what experiences have been supported by fundraising in the past.
Collect pledge forms and enter data
All pledges collected by choir and team members using pledge forms must be entered into RaiseAthon by
the Team Captain prior to the event. Pledge form funds
can be submitted by the Team Captain as cash or
cheques at the Team Package pick up (cheques can be
made out out to Choir Alberta). Note that credit card
donations can only be made online.
Again, people work better with goals and deadlines
to work towards. Establish benchmarks for how much
money in pledges you would like to raise within a certain timeframe or after a significant event (for example- within X number of weeks of your team launch, or
after a concert, or after a holiday weekend).
p
Talk the Walk
Chat about the Run For Music with everyone you meet!
People cannot donate to you and your team if they are
unaware that you are participating in the event. Direct
your family, friends, colleagues, and work and social
network to your fundraising page.
Establish a team fundraising target
Most people work more effectively when they set
a goal for themselves. Challenge your group to an
inspiring total that really motivates everyone, but is
also attainable. A group of 10 people need only raise
$250 each to reach a goal of $2500 (the suggested
minimum target which provides a 50% return). Keep in
mind, more ambitious goals, have a higher percentage
of returns.

On Apr 21, between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m., pick up team
packages and submit paper pledge forms and money
at the Running Room at 8537 109 Street NW. Team
packages include RFM t-shirts, race bibs, brunch tickets, and general information. p
Walk Day Check-in
Set a meeting location and time for event day, so that
your team can walk or run together. Make sure you
know who you are expecting so that everyone feels
included. Remember to thank everyone for their commitment and effort. And have fun!
