How often do we sound something like the
following?
o Nobody does what they say they’ll do.
o People promise me a response by the end of the day,
and I get nothing, without a word of explanation.
o Performance are not looking good, but I’m not going to
be the one to raise the red flag.
o Every time (you fill in the blank) sets a deadline, they
miss it. Nobody can depend on anything around here.
o We talk and talk about the same old issues, but nothing
ever changes. We never get around to making it
happen.

Essential Ingredients of Successful PM
o People | People | People
o What People Need
o Autonomy. the ability for one to make his or her own decisions. For a
software development team, this is critical. A team needs to feel
empowered, and a team needs to be empowered. Why? Because Agile
teaches us that change is inevitable during the software development
process.
o Mastery. The concept of mastery is fairly simple: people want to get
better at what they do. We find this in all areas of life. Part of our basic
DNA involves the desire to improve. Toddlers work tirelessly to master
the art of walking. They usually need very little encouragement. By
nature, they have a deep-rooted desire to master walking, and they
work at it until it becomes second nature.
o Purpose. Teams have a deep rooted desire to understand how their
work fits into the big picture. As an engineer, I want to understand why
the software I'm building matters. We need a reason and a purpose.

Alignment & Accountability
o Alignment is not unanimous agreement on a specific
direction. Alignment is, however, a broad agreement
to move forward and take accountability to achieve
that specific direction. It is not an event. It’s a
process and it needs to be understood and applied!
o Only when we assume full accountability for your
thoughts, feelings, actions, and results can you direct
your own destiny; otherwise, someone or something
else will.

How to run a successful project?
o Do project team members know exactly what is expected of them? Are they clear
about their roles?
o Are team members motivated to deliver results? Are they engaged with the
organization and the team?
o Do team members feel like their opinions are heard and that they can safely express
their opinions?
o Is there someone who motivates team members and recognizes their good work?
o Do team members get along well? Do they care about each other, about quality, and
about meeting the project's objectives?
o Do team members treat the project stakeholders with fairness, respect, and trust?
o Do stakeholders trust the project team? Do they feel that the team delivers?
o Are stakeholders engaged with the project team?
o Are they passionate about the project and the team?
o Would stakeholders keep using the project team's services if they could opt out?
o How likely are they to recommend the team and its members for other projects?
