How often do we sound something like the following? o Nobody does what they say they’ll do. o People promise me a response by the end of the day, and I get nothing, without a word of explanation. o Performance are not looking good, but I’m not going to be the one to raise the red flag. o Every time (you fill in the blank) sets a deadline, they miss it. Nobody can depend on anything around here. o We talk and talk about the same old issues, but nothing ever changes. We never get around to making it happen. ©2012 Droisys. All Rights Reserved. Essential Ingredients of Successful PM o People | People | People o What People Need o Autonomy. the ability for one to make his or her own decisions. For a software development team, this is critical. A team needs to feel empowered, and a team needs to be empowered. Why? Because Agile teaches us that change is inevitable during the software development process. o Mastery. The concept of mastery is fairly simple: people want to get better at what they do. We find this in all areas of life. Part of our basic DNA involves the desire to improve. Toddlers work tirelessly to master the art of walking. They usually need very little encouragement. By nature, they have a deep-rooted desire to master walking, and they work at it until it becomes second nature. o Purpose. Teams have a deep rooted desire to understand how their work fits into the big picture. As an engineer, I want to understand why the software I'm building matters. We need a reason and a purpose. ©2012 Droisys. All Rights Reserved. Alignment & Accountability o Alignment is not unanimous agreement on a specific direction. Alignment is, however, a broad agreement to move forward and take accountability to achieve that specific direction. It is not an event. It’s a process and it needs to be understood and applied! o Only when we assume full accountability for your thoughts, feelings, actions, and results can you direct your own destiny; otherwise, someone or something else will. ©2012 Droisys.
