Who Are We??
“IN 2014 more than 6,000 A.A.
members from the U.S. and Canada
participated in a random survey of the
membership. Such studies have been
conducted every three to four years since
1968 by the General Service Office.
Alcoholics Anonymous conducts this
survey to keep members informed on
current trends in membership
characteristics.
The survey also provides information
about A.A. to the professional community
and to the general public as part of A.A.’s
purpose to carry our message to those
who still suffer from alcoholism.”
- P 48
“We are like men who have lost their legs;
they never grow new ones.”
- BB, p. 30.
BEFORE coming to A.A., 59%
of the
members received some type of treatment or
counseling (such as medical, psychological,
spiritual, etc.) related to their drinking.
AFTER coming to A.A., 58%
of the
members received some type of treatment or
counseling (such as medical, psychological,
spiritual, etc.) related to their drinking.
“We are people who normally would not mix. But
there exists among us a fellowship, a friendliness,
and an understanding which is indescribably
wonderful. We are like the passengers of a great
liner the moment after rescue from shipwreck
when camaraderie, joyousness and democracy
pervade the vessel from steerage to Captain's
table.”
- BB, p. 17.
“...we are self-supporting through our
own contributions.” - AA® Preamble

We in AA are men and women who have
discovered, and admitted, that we
cannot control alcohol. We have learned
that we must live without it if we are to
avoid disaster for ourselves and those
close to us.”

P-48 – “A.A. Membership Survey”
On Step One
“Only Step One, where we made the 100 percent admission we were powerless over
alcohol, can be practiced with absolute perfection. The remaining eleven Steps
state perfect ideals.”
- 12 and 12®, Step 6, p. 68.
On Tradition One
“Even the newest of newcomers finds undreamed rewards as he tries to help his brother
alcoholic, the one who is even blinder than he.”
- 12 and 12®, Step 12, p. 109.
“To watch people recover, to see them help others, to watch loneliness vanish, to see a
fellowship grow up about you, to have a host of friends -- this is an experience you must not
miss.”
- BB®, “Working with Others,” p. 89.
On Concept One
“Final responsibility and ultimate authority for A.A. world services should always reside
in the collective conscience of our whole Fellowship.”
“The principles of Tradition Two are crystal-clear, Bill asserts: “The A.A. groups are to be
the final authority; their leaders are to be entrusted with delegated responsibilities only.”
