He has been married for three years to Linda Morroni. She is nineteen years his senior and millions of dollars richer. They met six weeks before they got married, at a casino in Las Vegas where Matt was working. At the time, Matt claimed that he fell in love with her as soon as he saw her, but all the signs of love point to Linda’s healthy bank account. Recent revelations confirm this theory. ‘I was working a 50-hour week in a job I hated. It was unbelievably boring. Then Linda came along and started to throw her money about on the casino table. We got on really well, but when I asked her out, I was pretty surprised that she didn’t turn me down. To be honest, although I liked her as a person, part of the attraction was that she had so much money,’ Matt confessed. ‘That’s still the case, but it doesn’t seem to bother her.’ I asked Matt if her family suspected that he was only interested in her money. ‘It’s a bit embarrassing really. They don’t seem to mind as long as she’s happy. She was quite lonely before she met me.’ Matt has a relaxed attitude towards their relationship. ‘Who knows what will happen? We just take each day as it comes. We haven’t got any children so we can do what we like. We do lots of travelling – we’re planning a two-week cruise in the Caribbean next month. We buy expensive clothes and eat in fancy restaurants. When life’s this good, why worry about the future?’ READING 1 Read the text. Are the sentences true or false? 1 2 3 4 5 Linda Morroni was nineteen when she met Matt. ______ Linda didn’t want to go out with Matt when he first asked her. ______ The reason for Matt’s interest in Linda has changed over the years. ______ Linda’s family don’t have a problem with Matt and Linda’s relationship. ______ Linda and Matt like to plan their future together. ______ The history of video games Just over fifty years ago, a young American engineer by the name of Ralph Baer was asked to build the best-ever television set. Baer was very talented and he didn’t find the task difficult. He had wanted to go further than his original objective and incorporate some kind of game into the TV set. Unfortunately, however, his superiors turned down the idea and he never got the chance. Two decades later, Ralph Baer’s idea, which had seemed unrealistic in the 1950s, became a reality. A team of engineers carried on his work, and in 1972 they produced the first video games. These were extremely simple by today’s standards. The first video tennis game, for example, consisted of one short white line on either side of the black screen and a white dot moving from side to side to represent the ball. The simplicity of these early games would not be satisfying enough for today’s more sophisticated consumers. Since the 1970s, computer games have been getting more and more complicated. The graphics are more realistic because they are computer-generated, and a great deal more money is spent on them by both customers and manufacturers. The games have also become more violent; in fact, they are often blamed for the rise in teenage violence in some countries. And what about the companies involved in developing computer games? You might be surprised to find out that Atari, in spite of its Japanese-sounding name, is actually an American company; that it was an American, too, who set up the Japanese company Sega; and that Nintendo, despite its modern image, has been trading for more than a hundred years. If you go skiing next winter, will you be skiing on less snow? If the answer is ‘yes’ to either of these questions, then you will have been directly influenced by the global climatic change known as the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect, contrary to general belief, is in fact a very necessary natural phenomenon. If the Earth’s atmosphere did not keep in any of the heat we get from the sun, our planet would be far too cold for us, and for any animals and plants, to live. The problem, however, is that pollution has changed the atmosphere in the last hundred years or so, and this has caused the greenhouse effect to increase too much. There have been many rises and falls in temperature throughout the history of our planet, for example during the last Ice Age. But the big problem now is one of time. Today’s temperature changes are happening very quickly. Calculations over the past century have shown that the average global temperature has risen about half a degree Celsius. That might sound like a small change in a long time, but our planet and all its inhabitants are used to changes over millions, not hundreds, of years. If we don’t take serious measures to stop this rise in temperature, in future centuries many species of animals and plants will be extinct. Eventually, human life will be threatened, and people will be wondering why we did nothing to protect ourselves when we still could. READING 1 Read the text and complete the sentences. 1 One result of the greenhouse effect is that ________________________________________ . 2 Animals and plants need the greenhouse effect to ________________________________________ . 3 The greenhouse effect has increased because ________________________________________ . 4 Our planet has experienced a lot of changes in ________________________________________ . 5 We should protect human life by _______________________________________. Mindblowing holidays Most of us dream of holidays in exotic, far-away places. Now it may be possible to take that dream one step further. Our mind is an amazing tool. As well as dealing with reality, it can create the unreal through imagination. Our imagination is often limited only because we don’t know enough about the subject we are thinking of. A new high-tech company is hoping to help. ‘I decided to investigate this area after seeing TotalRecall, a film in which a man is given a new memory,’ says Charlie Boshell, founder of a new ‘virtual holiday’ company called Mindblower. ‘At Mindblower, we can provide the information you need to let your imagination truly wander. You really believe you’re there – on that deserted Caribbean beach or sailing down the Amazon.’ Harmless electrodes are placed on either side of your head and download to your brain all the facts, figures and images of the holiday destination you have chosen. Your mind does the rest, and before you know it you’ve had the trip of a lifetime. Helen Lovick volunteered to try it out. ‘I chose the African jungle,’ she said. ‘It’s somewhere I’d always wanted to visit, and the experience was amazing. I was a bit anxious to begin with but I soon started to relax. It felt as if I was really there, walking among tall trees and listening to gorillas in the distance. I could feel leaves brushing against my face and the humidity in the air. It was the most incredible experience I’ve ever had. I’ll definitely be coming back for another session.’ READING 1 Read the text.
