ChE-403 Reaction < CSTR > Mohammad Faraj Prof.:Malik Al-Ahmad Introduction What we will talk about ? o What Is CSTR? o The Experiment That Was Done: Theory. Experimental Procedure. Results and Discussions. Conclusions and Recommendations. What is CSTR? o CSTR ( Continuous Stirred Tank ) is a type of reactor used commonly in industrial processing. o It is Used Primarily For: Liquid phase reactions. Steady state operation. Perfectly mixed operation. What is CSTR? What is CSTR? Advantages: Good temp. control is easily maintained. Cheap to construct. Disadvantages: Conversion of reactor to product per volume of reactor is small compared to other flow reactors. Theory of The Experiment The General Material Balance: dN A FA1 FA0 rA dV dt Theory of The Experiment For CSTR: FA0 FA r.V 0 FA0 0 .C A0 FA .C A 0 (C A0 C A ) k .C A .V Theory of The Experiment To Convert The Conductivity To Concentration: A 0.195(1 0.0184 * (T 294)) * CA Experimental Procedure The reactor that used in this experiment was CSTR with T = 22C. and the following reaction was done: NaOH CH 3COOC 2 H 5 CH 3COONa C2 H 5OH Sodium Hydroxide Ethyl Acetate Sodium Acetate Ethyl Alcohol The objectives of the experiment to know the reaction constant in CSTR. Experimental Procedure Results and Discussions Results and Discussions The concentrations of A at Steady State: CONCENTRATION OF A (mol/ml) @ Feed CONCENTRATION OF A (mol/ml) @ CSTR 50 24.67 Results and Discussions α = 5 (Batch Case). k = 1.2417X10-6 [ml^4/(s.mol^4)] (Batch Case). CA = CAo ( 1 – X ) => X = 0.5145 ν = 1 ml/s C Ao . . X ml 9 k 1.788 10 5 4 s . mol V .C A 4 Conclusions and Recommendations The value of k is varying in the two cases, may be because of the steady state in two cases not reached. The CSTR experiment not needed for finding the variables in this experiment (batch reactor is enough). The Recording of results must taken by using computer to get accurate results.
