GENERAL INFORMATION Mission Statement The goal of the Du Quoin Swimming Indians is to give all eligible swimmers the opportunity to swim competitively, to achieve their own personal goals as swimmers, and to participate positively as a member of the team. It is hoped that by doing so, each swimmer will benefit in matters of pride, confidence, sportsmanship and health. Finally, it is desired that the members of the Du Quoin Swimming Indians accomplish all of their endeavors in a manner that will reflect positively on the community of Du Quoin. Parent’s Corner There will be a bulletin board placed next to the west gate at all home meets. Please remember to check there for worker’s schedule and other parent information. We will also send out emails and text messages periodically with information that you will want to know. Make sure we have your email address and cell number(s). Fundraisers Fundraising varies depending on the needs of the team each year. Board members will orchestrate events and contact parents regarding worker needs, donations, and logistics of all events. Sponsors Sponsorships are the lifeline of our Swim Team. Each year we seek sponsorships of all amounts from area businesses, churches, and families. Sponsor requests were mailed to the Du Quoin Chamber of Commerce businesses as well as some former donors. We have enclosed a sponsor form in this packet. If you or someone you know (grandparents, friends, etc.) might be interested in helping us with the cost of our annual swim efforts, please let us know. We Thank You!! For more information on Sponsorships, contact Shalayne Ragar (318-5220) or Wayne Halstead (618-542-9798), sponsorship committee. Team Pictures Pictures will be taken early in the season. The date for the pictures will be announced. We will be taking a Team Picture and for interested persons you may also purchase individual picture packages of your swimmer. As in the past, all profit made from this has been donated to the Swim Team. This is a wonderful opportunity to get pictures of your favorite swimmer and help a good cause!! More info will be available later. ~3~ PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES Worker Schedule We cannot have a meet without workers! Workers can be parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, etc. Please remember to check your e-mail for the worker schedule. You will be sent a schedule as soon as registrations are complete. If you do have an e-mail address, a paper schedule will be given to your child at practice. It is very important to fulfill your assigned duties in order for the meets to go smoothly. Please be prompt to your station at the times & dates assigned to you. It is very frustrating to be the one left standing to be relieved. Should a conflict arise where you cannot work, we ask you to find a replacement worker prior to the night of the meet AND notify the worker coordinator of the change. A worker phone list will be provided with the schedule. Job assignments will be split into two shifts; 1st shift ~ events1-40, 2nd shift ~ events 41-82. Worker coordinator is Crystal Harsy, 618-318-1182. Job Descriptions Timer Great for those who like to watch the action closely and cheer for swimmers! This job is easy to learn and you will have a member from the other team alongside you to help. (We need 14 per meet – 1 for each lane and 1 backup): As the swimmers arrive at the blocks, face the starter and await his/her instructions at the start of each race. Start and stop your stopwatch according to pre-meet instructions. Verify the information on the time card (swimmer, event, and lane #), record the times for your lane on the time card and give to the runner. Ribbons Great for someone who likes to have a specific task and just get it done. This allows for time off your feet. (2 per meet): Double check the times on the official event labels and those on the time card. Apply the labels to the appropriate place ribbon and file in the award box. Concession Stand Great for anyone with a heart to serve. No knowledge of swim team required. (2 per home meet only): The concession stand is open for home meets only, but does open before the start of the meet to accommodate those workers setting up and early swimmers. If you are scheduled to work the first half, we ask that you arrive by 5:15 p.m. We will switch concession workers at event 30 instead of 40. Concessions close before the end of the meet. Runner Great for the active parent who wants to be near the action. No actual “running” is required, but some fast walking is necessary on some events. (4 per home meet, 2 per away meet): Take swimmer time cards from swimmers to timers (25 meter events only) and from timers to the scorer’s table after each event. 50/50 Ticket Sales Great for the social parent. This is also a great job for parents of young swimmers. (1 per HOME meets only) Work the crowd selling 50/50 tickets throughout the first half of the meet. Count and divide the money. Draw the winning ticket at the announcer’s table and have the winner announced. Give our half of the proceeds to the team treasurer, Stephanie Cravens. ~4~ *JOBS THAT REQUIRE SOME TRAINING We need help in these areas! Please consider working alongside our experienced workers in these areas as a trainee! Bullpen* Great for anyone experienced in handling children or organizing groups. Great job for anyone who wants to learn the basics of how a swim meet operates. (4 per home meet, 2 per away meet): Responsible for lining up the swimmers in correct events and lanes according to the entry cards. Announcer* Great for the social parent or anyone who doesn’t mind taking charge. (2 per home meet only): Calls the swimmers to the bullpen prior to their events. Announces the event on the blocks before each race begins. Announces meet score as it is received from the scorers, as well as recognition of our team sponsors. Scorer* Great for anyone with computer experience and/or data entry skills. (1-3 per meet): Import both teams’ entry data into the computer scoring system. Input swimmer times from time cards into the computer; verify for accuracy, print award labels and official score printout. **JOBS THAT REQUIRE SOME TRAINING PER SISL GUIDELINES We need help in these areas! We would love to have you work alongside our current starter and stroke judges and help you get the required training! Starter** (1 per home meet only): Hold the pre-meet training for pickers and timers, explaining procedures and testing watches. The starter is in command of the swimmers, as well as making sure that the timers are at the correct end of the pool to begin each event. Stroke Judges** (4 per meet): It is imperative that you know the proper stroke technique based on the USA Swimming guidelines. Training is provided and “refresher” courses are available online. ~5~ SWIMMING INFORMATION Coaches Coaches are TBD for the 2017 Season. Swim Suits New suits are being ordered for the 2017 season. The design of our new team suit is shown on the left. If you don’t want to order the team suit, you must purchase a plain black suit. The boys wear jammers, tight suits that come down to just above the knees. Traditional Speedos are not necessary. Suit fittings will be available at the second early-bird sign up, March 25. Orders can be placed with Jill Funk. Practice Schedule A practice schedule will be provided at a later date. Please remember that all swimmers need to arrive 15 minutes before entering the pool for proper stretches. Swimmers are required to attend at least 3 practices per week in order to swim in that week’s meets. The practice schedule will be finalized after registration. General practice times are 9 a.m.-10 a.m. for swimmers 10 and under, and 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m for swimmers 11 and up. You will be notified after registration of which practice time your child will attend. We have traditionally offered a couple of afternoon practices on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3-4 p.m. for swimmers unable to attend a morning practice or swimmers who desire additional practice. This will be determined when registrations have been finalized. ************REGISTERING FOR SWIM MEETS ~ VERY IMPORTANT***************** For your child to swim in a meet, you must register them on the Swimming Indian website at www.duquoinswimmingindians.swim-team.us at least 2 days prior to the meet. **If you do not register your child, they will not be entered in the meet.** If you do not have internet access, please talk to one of the coaches. There is a separate entry fee that must be paid for each invitational at the time of sign up for each event. Entry fees cannot be reimbursed once paid, so be sure that you are able to attend when considering whether to participate. The Invitationals give out awards, but they do not count for points for your swimmer. Invitationals are held at Anna, Salem, Herrin, Marion and Mount Vernon. All Invitationals are league sanctioned meets, which means they count for meet attendance and the times will be considered for championships. Please consider attending at least one invitational. If you have any questions about your swimmers ability to compete, please speak with the coaches. The dates of the Invitationals and the host team are listed on the swim calendar provided at the beginning of the season. More information will be available at a later date concerning the Invitationals, as we do not have all the information from the host team until the week before the meet. Our Invitational Coordinator is Jamie Lemons. Her cell is 318-1391 and her email is [email protected] RULES & REGULATIONS DISCIPLINE POLICY: In order for the Du Quoin swim team to achieve its stated goals, a certain amount of discipline must be maintained at practices and during meets. Swimmers must attend the requisite practices and meets. Furthermore, as a logical condition of membership on the Du Quoin swim team, all swimmers must be willing to accept instruction from their coach during these practices and meets. Behavior that is detrimental to the positive aims of the team, that is disruptive of its activities, or that is derogatory or abusive to any of its members will not be tolerated. Infractions will be dealt with by issuing a written notice. After receiving a second notice, your child will not be allowed to participate in the next home meet. If it becomes necessary to issue a third written notice, your child will not be allowed to participate in any capacity with the swim team until the head coach is satisfied that your child’s behavior will meet team expectations. This policy is intended to be corrective of behavior and not necessarily punitive. It is the sincerest wish of the board that all who sign up to be a part of the swim team remain on the team and have a positive and enriching experience this year and for years to come; however, the board of the DuQuoin Swimming Indians reserves the right to expel any swimmer who cannot participate within the guidelines of its policies. Du Quoin Pool Rules First offense- you will be verbally warned by a lifeguard or a member of the pool staff. This will be by a whistle blow or verbally followed by an explanation. Second offense- you will be sat out of the pool at the lifeguard or pool staffs’ discretion. ~7~ Third offense- you will be sent to the manager’s office and disciplined accordingly.
