'Big Jammu Run' to save water gets large response
Enthusiasts taking part in the marathon flagged off by PHE Minister Sham Lal Choudhary on Sunday.

JAMMU: Minister for PHE, Irrigation
and Flood Control Sham Lal Choudhary
on Sunday urged the people to assist the
government in its initiatives of saving
water and keeping the water resources
clean.
"Water conservation without the involvement of masses is not possible", the minister said adding that there is a need that
people start developing water saving
habits and refrain from throwing garbage
in the water bodies. The minister said this
after flagging off 5 km long 'Big Jammu
Run - Run to Save Water' from Gulshan
Ground here this morning. The minister
exhorted the participants of 'Big Jammu
Run' to become leaders of change and
spread the message of saving water in the
society. "We must take a pledge today to
conserve as much water as we can and
guide others to follow," he added. Minister
of State for PHE, I and FC Sayeed
Farooq Ahmed Andrabi, in his address,
said the government is taking one step
after the other for providing safe and clean
drinking water to the people of the State.
Many new Water Supply Schemes are
being established in rural and far-flung
areas of the State at a tremendous pace
for the benefit of common masses, he
added. He further said, "It is the duty of
every citizen to save this scarce natural
resource for future generations."

Wasim, daughter of the soil who played the
childhood role of Geeta Phogat, also insisted on the importance of saving water and
expressed her concern over the fact that
using water injudiciously would lead to a
big crisis soon. Addressing the participants, Zaira said, "I am really excited and
proud to be a part of the BIG Jammu
Run. It is a noble initiative by 92.7 BIG

In the first technical session,
Prof. A.K Koul, Dean
Academics, BGSBU, informed
the participants about the biodiversity concerns and challenges
the State is facing. Dr. Potakkal
George Jose, Scientist, National
Institute of Hydrology spoke
about the glacier recession and
climate change impacts in the
State. Anuradha Gupta,
Scientist, JKSPCB, highlighted the importance of segregation of waste in handling and
management of solid waste disposal in the State.
Humayun Rashid, Scientist,
EE&RS gave a general
overview of Land Use and Land
Cover changes in the State and
its impacts on the environment.
Veteran Scientist Prof. R.D
Gupta highlighted the impacts
of modernisation of agricultural
practices on soils, surface and
groundwater. Dr. Pankaj
Mehta, Assistant Professor
(AP), CUJ and Coordinator,
University Innovation Cell
stressed on the groundwater
quality issues of the Vijaypur
block in Samba District and its
deterioration. Dr. Shweta
Yadav, AP CUJ, discussed
about the menace of air pollution in the State. Nadeem
Qadri, Environmental Lawyer,
Centre for Environment and
Law, in his thought provoking
lecture motivated the audience
about the support that the judiciary can provide for protection
of
environment.

moderated the technical sessions. The programme was cocoordinated by Dr. Shahid

Pertinently, 'Big Jammu Run - Run to
save Water' was an initiative of
Communication

Capacity
Development Unit (CCDU), Department
of PHE, I and FC and supported by Big
92.7 FM. Later, the minister felicitated
the winners of lucky draw including Abdul
Hamid, Shakti Kumar and Tushar
Saroch. The message of 'saving water' was
spread through various scintillating performances viz. Zumba performance by
Shape n Smile and Body Engineers
Fitness Centre, musical show by Tansen
Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, dramatic plays
by Rangyug and students of Jodhamal
Public School. People hailing from all
parts of Jammu besides officers and
jawans of Indian Army, Air Force, Border
Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve
Police Force (CRPF), Jammu and
Kashmir Police (JKP), Indian Reserve
Police (IRP), professional athletes,
sportspersons, senior citizens, school and
college students participated in the run.

Dr. Jitendra Singh tabled
political resolution before the
Working Committee and said
that the resolution enumerates various decisions taken
by the central government
during the last three months
which have been historic and

world nations.
Notwithstanding Congress
and its cohorts opposition to
the demonetisation and its
efforts to incite the public
against the government and
to rake it up as an anti-people and anti-poor move has
utterly failed which demonstrates that the Indian public
is with Narendra Modi and
fully supports its actions to
curb black money.
Dr. Jitendra Singh came
heavily on Congress and
other parties for trying to
find fault with the rehabilitation package for the refugees
from West Pakistan and
PoJK and demanded that
these parties must inform the
public as to how much relief
had been provided by these
parties when they were in
power since 1947.
The political resolution
was fully endorsed by the
Working Committee after it
was seconded by Cabinet

Dr. Nirmal Singh highlighted the achievements and
the schemes launched by the
State Coalition Government.
He said that clearing the
total chaos and mis-management which had been the

previous government will

NAGROTA: 'Dag' a collection of Kashmiri poems written
by Poshker Nath Koul (Bedil) was released by Nazir
Ahmad Laway Member Parliament. The book release
function was organised here at Community Hall in Jagti
Township.
The author of the book is a well known writer, dramatist, poet and actor. His popular works are Laola
Majloon, Kral Koor Shereen Farhad, Hemal Nagrai, etc.
The release of the book 'Dag' was an initiative made by
Pamposh theatre and organized by Dainposh Koul
Publication. Dr. R.L Bhat President SAMPRATI
presided over the meeting. He read the research paper on
the book and discussed various technical aspects. His
critical analysis about the book fetched appreciation of
audience. Prof. O.N Koul academician by profession and
social worker threw some light on the life of Poshker Nath
Koul (Bedil).
Chief Guest Nazir Ahmed Laway also shared his experiences with Bedil as a teacher. He said Bedil was a teacher
par excellence. Pardesi also spoke on the occasion. Raj
Nath Raina presented a Ghazal written by Bedil.

Police restores
water supply

SRINAGAR:
Anantnag
Police provided helping hand
in Batapora Larnoo village
of district Anantnag by
restoring the water supply in
the area.
Consequent to chilling cold
and night temperatures below
freezing point, the pipe lines
for water supply remained
blocked for many days, causing severe problems to the villagers. Anantnag Police along
with CRPF reached the village and efforts were made to
restore water supply in the
area and the water supply
was restored.

Jammu on Sunday organised a
function here to felicitate the
meritorious students, who
