8 z Monday z January 16, 2017 'Big Jammu Run' to save water gets large response Enthusiasts taking part in the marathon flagged off by PHE Minister Sham Lal Choudhary on Sunday. STATE TIMES NEWS JAMMU: Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Sham Lal Choudhary on Sunday urged the people to assist the government in its initiatives of saving water and keeping the water resources clean. "Water conservation without the involvement of masses is not possible", the minister said adding that there is a need that people start developing water saving habits and refrain from throwing garbage in the water bodies. The minister said this after flagging off 5 km long 'Big Jammu Run - Run to Save Water' from Gulshan Ground here this morning. The minister exhorted the participants of 'Big Jammu Run' to become leaders of change and spread the message of saving water in the society. "We must take a pledge today to conserve as much water as we can and guide others to follow," he added. Minister of State for PHE, I and FC Sayeed Farooq Ahmed Andrabi, in his address, said the government is taking one step after the other for providing safe and clean drinking water to the people of the State. Many new Water Supply Schemes are being established in rural and far-flung areas of the State at a tremendous pace for the benefit of common masses, he added. He further said, "It is the duty of every citizen to save this scarce natural resource for future generations." Child artist of 'Dangal' movie fame Zaira Wasim, daughter of the soil who played the childhood role of Geeta Phogat, also insisted on the importance of saving water and expressed her concern over the fact that using water injudiciously would lead to a big crisis soon. Addressing the participants, Zaira said, "I am really excited and proud to be a part of the BIG Jammu Run. It is a noble initiative by 92.7 BIG FM and CCDU, Department of PHE and Workshop held on environmental issues of J&K STATE TIMES NEWS JAMMU: One day consultation workshop on "Environmental Issues of J&K - Need for Cooperation" was organised by J&K ENVIS Centre, DEE&RS, in association with Community College, Central University of Jammu and Wildlife Conservation Fund. Emphasising on the need to appreciate the true value of environment in the growth and development of our country, O.P Sharma, APCCF/ Director, EE&RS gave brief introduction about the programme. Prof. Ashok Aima VC, Central University of Jammu was the patron of this consultation workshop. Prof. Lokesh Verma, Academic Coordinator, CUJ welcomed such initiative and desired for more of such programmes. He also informed the audience about future collaboration of Community College, CUJ with Climate Change Centre and ENVIS centre J&K Dignitaries posing for a photograph after the workshop. for developing curricula for online courses on Environment and Climate Change.Majid Farooq, Scientist/Coordinator ENVIS, presented a brief overview of J&K ENVIS and its role in highlighting the state environmental issues and mentioned about usefulness of data and newsletters being uploaded on ENVIS website. In the first technical session, Prof. A.K Koul, Dean Academics, BGSBU, informed the participants about the biodiversity concerns and challenges the State is facing. Dr. Potakkal George Jose, Scientist, National Institute of Hydrology spoke about the glacier recession and climate change impacts in the State. Anuradha Gupta, Scientist, JKSPCB, highlighted the importance of segregation of waste in handling and management of solid waste disposal in the State. Humayun Rashid, Scientist, EE&RS gave a general overview of Land Use and Land Cover changes in the State and its impacts on the environment. Veteran Scientist Prof. R.D Gupta highlighted the impacts of modernisation of agricultural practices on soils, surface and groundwater. Dr. Pankaj Mehta, Assistant Professor (AP), CUJ and Coordinator, University Innovation Cell stressed on the groundwater quality issues of the Vijaypur block in Samba District and its deterioration. Dr. Shweta Yadav, AP CUJ, discussed about the menace of air pollution in the State. Nadeem Qadri, Environmental Lawyer, Centre for Environment and Law, in his thought provoking lecture motivated the audience about the support that the judiciary can provide for protection of environment. Prof. Bholanath Sharma (Retired) and Prof H. S. Sehgal, Dean Life Sciences, CUJ chaired and moderated the technical sessions. The programme was cocoordinated by Dr. Shahid Mushtaq, Dr. Irfan Khursheed Shah, Dr. Pankaj Mehta and Gowhar Meraj. Police restores water supply STATE TIMES NEWS SRINAGAR: Anantnag Police provided helping hand in Batapora Larnoo village of district Anantnag by restoring the water supply in the area. Consequent to chilling cold and night temperatures below freezing point, the pipe lines for water supply remained blocked for many days, causing severe problems to the villagers. Anantnag Police along with CRPF reached the village and efforts were made to restore water supply in the area and the water supply was restored.
