Overview of St Helen’s CE Primary School, Alveston
St Helen’s Primary School is a one form entry primary school, with 7 classes from
Reception to Year 6 (ages 4-11 years old). It is located in the village of Alveston, just
south of Thornbury on the A38. Currently there are 183 pupils on roll.
As of September 2015, 12.4% of pupils were on the register for Special Educational
Needs (SEN) and 14.9% of children attracted Pupil Premium funding.
The school’s vision statement, set in September 2014, is:
‘Excellence, enjoyment and achievement together in a nurturing Christian
community’
The Headteacher, Andy Spens, has been in post since January 2014 and the school
was judged ‘Good’ by OFSTED in January 2015.
The school has strong links with the local church, has an active and supportive PTA
and plays a key role community life.
50th Anniversary
The school began moving to its current site in September 1965, and the site was in full
use by June 1966. This academic year therefore, marks the 50th year of the school on
its present site.
To mark this occasion, the whole school community is concentrating its efforts on
raising the funds to build a brand new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) on the site of a
redundant outdoor swimming pool. We aim to mark this special year, by
transforming an area of our school site and leaving something for future generations
of children in Alveston to enjoy.

The brief:
To build a MUGA which enables:
-
Greater opportunities for outdoor games and PE during curriculum time
-
Increased space during playtime for children to play ball games
-
Promoting healthier lifestyles and increasing levels of fitness
-
A wider variety of sports to be played throughout the year (TAG rugby,
netball, basketball, football, girls’ football, hockey, tennis, cricket, multi-sports)
-
Extra curricular sports provision to be developed
-
Wider community use of the school facilities
-
Space to hold tournaments with other local schools
Total cost, details and plans for the development
One of our parents, an architect, has looked at the space and produced a design
for the MUGA. Two contractors have then been working with us on designs and a
third has been contacted and is putting together drawings and a quote.
The aim would be to demolish the former changing rooms and level the swimming
pool. A 32 x 16m MUGA will then fit in the space of the former site with simple
landscaping around, lifting the whole area. A MUGA will also allow a clear line of
sight through to the field, opening up the space.

Proposed funding for this development:
We have established a fundraising team to coordinate the project. We aim to raise
the money over the school year, with construction taking place in the summer of
2016, ready for opening in September 2016.
We are pursuing a number of different ways of raising the money required. Our aim is
that there will be a mix of funding streams including grants, donations from local
business, local community organisations and more traditional fundraising.
The PTA and school together will hopefully be able to contribute between £15,000
and £20,000 depending on next year’s capital allocation.
Personal fundraising
Local organisations
Local businesses
Grant bodies
Events
School capital
PTA
We will be encouraging children, staff and parents to fundraise personally and we
will be launching an ‘Entrepreneurial Challenge’ in early 2016 where each child in
Year 5 and 6 is given £5 to form a business with friends and multiply the money.
Timescales
Our aim is to complete the fundraising over the course of our 50th year, with the
MUGA to be built during the summer holidays in 2016.
Proposed usage of the MUGA (school and community):
It is planned that the MUGA will have a significant impact on the life of the school,
opening up many more opportunities for children of the school and the wider
community.
School use:
We have tried to outline the future use of the MUGA by the school:
Weekly use:
-
PE lessons (at least 10 hours per week)
-
Breaktime and lunchtime use (at least 7.5 hours per week)
-
After-school clubs (5 hours per week)
Occasional use:
-
Sports matches (Netball, football)
Community use:
Our aim is that the new MUGA would be an area that is used widely by the
community, as the former swimming pool was:
-
After school club, a private company, runs from 3:30pm - 6pm each day and
would use this space. They provide holiday clubs in each school holiday for
children from across the Thornbury area and so this would be well used
throughout termtime and holidays
-
Inter-school tournaments. As a school we would seek to launch an interschool sports competition termly which would be held on the MUGA
-
St Helen’s Pre-School are located nearby and we would hope to timetable
them some weekly time on this area and in our new Reception Outdoor Area
to develop their outdoor use and physical activity
-
Local cubs, brownies and etc would be able to use the MUGA
-
Wider community use - our aim would be to make the pitch available for
community use outside of school hours, subject to agreements with local
neighbours and site security implications. Floodlights increase the potential for
this in evenings, but add significantly to the costings (see costings). These are
currently not being considered as part of the project, but could be added at
a later point in time.
