Coleridge Recreation Ground Improvements
Dear Resident,
We are writing to update you on the proposed improvements to Coleridge Recreation Ground. Our initial
consultation gathered views on what projects people would like the funding, allocated from developer
contributions, spent on. One of the suggestions, a second tennis court, was taken forward recently. It would
have required the removal of a number of trees and many representations were made regarding this when
the planning application was submitted. This resulted in the application being withdrawn. Officers have
now reviewed the options and space available, whilst being mindful of the loss of trees and any significant
loss of green space in the central area of the park (a recurring comment made by respondents to the initial
consultation). We would like to give you the opportunity to make comments on the new proposals which
are as follows and shown on the layout plan inside.
TENNIS COURTS
Existing Tennis Court – To make the most of the existing tennis court position and to prevent the need to
remove trees in this area, the proposal is to replace/upgrade this court by relocating it approximately 6
metres in the direction of Coleridge Road. The existing trees will be unaffected and their health will be
improved by top soiling the area immediately over their roots; at present many of the tree roots are under
the existing court surface. As this will be an amendment to the existing planning application, revisions to the
footprint will be made and the application re-submitted shortly.
Proposed position for a 2nd Tennis Court - We would like to seek your views on an alternative position which
is shown on the layout plan. The proposal is to install the second tennis court adjacent to Davy Road, in the
north-west corner of Coleridge Recreation Ground. There is currently a small belt of vegetation in which
there are two small trees which will be removed, but any loss of vegetation and shrubs will be compensated
by new landscaping as shown - to help screen views into the area from Davy Road.
Natural Gravel Path
Q5. Do you support the addition of the natural gravel path shown on the plan?
YES 
NO 

PROPOSED MULTI USE GAMES AREA (MUGA)
As originally identified in the first round of consultation, the Council are now looking to progress the
installation of a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA). This facility is available in a number of sizes, but to be in
keeping with the surrounding landscape we are proposing one with the smallest area. The layout plan shows
the proposed position, a very similar location to that which appeared on the original consultation plan. We
would once again like your views on this proposal, before a planning application is submitted for this part of
the development.
OTHER IMPROVEMENTS – PROPOSED NATURAL GRAVEL PATH AND PLAY AREA IMPROVEMENTS
As part of the improvements we are also looking to lay a natural compacted gravel path to allow easy access
from the main entrance, across the recreation ground in the direction of the proposed MUGA and finishing
near to the pedestrian exit that leads to Fanshawe Road. Suggestions for installing a path were received
during the original public consultation from several respondents.
There is also funding allocated to improve the existing children’s play area and we will be carrying out
further consultation on this in the New Year.
Please tell us what you think by completing our short survey which can be found at
https://www.cambridge.gov.uk/current-consultations
or alternatively please complete the survey on the back page and send this back to us using the address
shown at the bottom of the form. The consultation closes on Friday 20th December 2013.
