ANIMALS & ENVIRONMENT
FOR YOUNGER KIDS
a Brainstorming: Which animals can you find in the jungle?
→Ask the children to play charades or imitate each of the animals mentioned.
→As animals are mentioned, categorize them using a spider web or a chart, according to size,
number of legs, colours, actions they can do (fly, run, crawl).
b Play “I Can Spy with My Little Eye”
Version 1: The teacher shows a picture of the jungle with animals. One player says, "I spy,
with my little eye, something beginning with A [or any other letter of the alphabet]". The
other player(s) look at the picture and try to guess what the animal beginning with A might
be. (It needs to be something that is actually present and that everyone can see.) The kid
who guesses correctly chooses something else for the other players to guess.
Note: Suggested book→ “Rumble in the Jungle” by Giles Andreae & Davis Wojtowycz (Scholastic). On p.2 you`ll find a nice picture of a jungle setting with hidden animals.
Version 2: The teacher gets pictures of jungle animals + a piece of paper of a bigger size with
a hole in the middle of it. Teacher places the paper on top of the picture and moves it around
so children can spy and guess which animal is covered.

ANIMALS & ENVIRONMENT
FOR ELDER KIDS
a
Brainstorming:
→ Which animals can you find in the jungle? As animals are mentioned, categorize
them using a spider web or a chart, according to size, number of legs, colour, ways in
which they move (fly, run, crawl, jump). Venn diagrams are highly suggested.
→ In which countries do we find jungle environments? Using a map, children can
place jungles around the world.
→ Group Work. Forming groups, the students describe a jungle. With the aid of a
chart or spider web and the different characteristics mentioned before, students can
either draw a jungle and then talk about it, or write sentences, phrases or words to
describe jungles.
→Extension: It is important for students to respect Nature, the environment, and the
creatures living in it. Trees and plants give us shade and air to breathe. Animals can
teach us principles and become our friends. Students can prepare “Show and Tell”
sessions and talk about animals in danger of extinction. Students can also plant and
water plants at School, simply including small plant pots by your classroom window.
Contact associations such as Greenpeace or Vida Silvestre to find more about
creatures and what we can do for them.
b
Read and Write:
→ Find the names of animals and write the words.

FOR ELDER STUDENTS
a
→ Play “Spin, Match, Read, & Write!”:
Students create two spinners with a piece of cardboard in an octagonal shape and divide
them in 8 sections each. Then, they draw:
•
Spinner 1: In each section, (animals or fruits) in black and white.
•
Spinner 2: In each section they write the name of a colour.
Finally, they pass a pencil through a hole made in the centre of each spinner. Students spin
each spinner at the same time and frame sentences according to what they can read in
each of them. Then, they write sentences like:
“My apple is blue.” Or any other structure you would like to work on.
b
→ Follow the Maze. Pair / Group work.
The teacher explains the aim of this game. The aim is to to find a path from the entrance in
the top left side of the maze to the exit in the bottom right. The teacher gives each
student/pair/team one maze. Students can move from one square to the next by following
colours horizontally or vertically. When students have finished, one team can check the
other one’s route.
