This course is a NCCP Competition Dev elopment Module that allows coaches to:
 I dentify common sources of conflict in sport
 Learn the steps to take in order to prev ent and resolve conflict
 Dev elop the skills to empow er coaches to listen and speak effectively in
conflict situations
According to Goldsmith’s 2014 Article “The Top Ten Reasons Why Coaches Fail” due
to coaches hav ing access to a lot of the same information w ithin their sport, in order
to gain a competitiv e edge coaches must look outside of their sport. Our
Conference provides the opportunity for coaches to do exactly that!
We hav e four incredible sessions for attendees to choose from such as:
 End the Trend Know Your Rights, a session that puts coaches in the hot seat
facing real life unpredictable scenarios, which will result in their being better
prepared w hen disaster strikes.
 Friend, Mentor, Coach: Building Coach and Performance Athlete
Relationships, a session w ill be led by coaches w ith insightful personal stories of
building trusting relationships over many years.
 Mentoring Your Club Coaches “Team Work Makes the Dream Work”, this
presentation is going to focus on the role clubs can play in order to help
dev elop their coaches internally in order to hav e consistent high quality
coaching, throughout their organization.
 Coaching beyond the Classroom, this session employs notion of gaining
know ledge/information by coaching and then applying it. Additionally, how
this interacts w ith your coaching philosophies, beliefs, and bias.
Dr. Dav id Scott is an Associate Professor of sport psychology in the Faculty of
Kinesiology at the Univ ersity of New Brunswick in Fredericton, New Brunswick where
he teaches and does research in the area of sport and exercise and psychology. He
is currently a consultant w ith the Montreal Canadiens of the NHL, the St. John’s
I ceCaps of the American Hockey League, and the Saint John Sea Dogs of the
QMJHL. I n this session, Dr. Dav id Scott w ill provide coaches with the tips and tricks
necessary to finding the proper balance.
Dr. Jane Thornton, recognizes that coaches make a significant difference in an
athlete’s life. I n the moments before a spectacular performance or in the ev eryday
training env ironment, the words coaches say influence outcomes, build dreams, and
set us along a certain pathw ay. She w as a member of the National team from 2001
to 2011, medaling at multiple World Championships, the World Cup, and stroking the
Women’s Eight at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Take adv antage of this opportunity to
listen to Dr. Thornton giv e an inspiring session on the key elements coaches impact.
