What is a Photo Essay?
“A photo essay is very simply a collection of images that are placed in a specific order to tell the
progression of events, emotions, and concepts. Used by world class photojournalists such as
Lauren Greenfield and James Nachtwey, and Joachim Ladefoged to name a few, the photo essay
takes the same story telling techniques as a normal essay, translated into visual images.”

First identify a theme from Chad Harbach’s The Art of Fielding. Briefly describe
which (main) theme you identified.
Then identify your take on this theme: define a central idea you wish to put in
pictures in you photo essay.
Come up with a suitable title for your photo essay that puts your idea about the
theme in words.
Do research: go back to the novel and find key passages that support your theme.
Select at least 5 key passages that best support your claim of a thesis.
Plan your shots if you decide to photograph images, or find suitable images
(remember to include bibliographical information and sources) that illustrate your
angle and interpretation about the theme.
Each image should be accompanied by a caption citing the relevant quote from the
novel and a one-line explanation why the picture can be linked to the theme.
Consult the rubric below for the way your photo essay will be marked: identifying a
theme (20%), Aesthetic Effect (10%), Organization (20 %), Typography &
Semantics (20 %), Visual Text (30 %).
