How to: Create engineering QR codes
1. Introduction
Augmented Reality (AR) combines the real with the virtual
world; enabling videos to be layered over a real object or
image (photograph, label, painting, notice). AR provides
opportunities to create video learning hotspots linked to
pieces of equipment or photographs in the engineering
workshop areas. Providing learners with access to a visual
learning resource that could be to support them, to review or
extend learning or bring in ‘real life’ work-based examples.
Aurasma is one tool that can be used to create AR learning
materials. In order to create resources you need to use
Aurasma Studio alongside the Aurasma App. These tools
create AR experiences called Auras.
The key components of an Aura are a Trigger image (the
image or object Aurasma recognises) and an Overlay (the
digital element that is launched on your mobile device when
the Aurasma viewfinder recognises a Trigger Image). Auras
can include multiple Overlays, and those Overlays can have
various commands attached to them.
2. In practice
Ian, an Engineering Instructor at PETA Limited is now using
augmented reality to link images in the workshop area to
video clips.
By using the Aurasma App on the tablet and following
PetaEngineers apprentices are able to scan the images
below and link directly to their associated learning/support
videos.

3. Step by step guide
1. Watch this Aurasma video tutorial. This
will explain the difference between the
Studio and the App.

2. Go to the Aurasma Studio website and
sign up for an account.
3. Once logged in select the Create New
Aura link in the top right-hand corner.
Creating an Aura is a four step process:
1. Creating a Trigger Image
2. Uploading an Overlay
3. Creating an Aura from the Trigger and Overlay
4. Sharing your Aura
Step 1: Creating a Trigger Image
a. Select the option to Click to Upload Trigger Image.
b. Provide a name for your trigger image/photo. Browse your computer for
the photo and provide a description. Select Save.
Note: If Aurasma does not believe your image will work as a trigger
then you will get an error message.

c. Once uploaded you will be given a number of options to make your
photograph even stronger as a Trigger image. This can make it quicker
for the App to recognise the image and connect it to the video.
Learn how to make your Trigger image
stronger using a technique called Masking in
this YouTube video.
Step 2: Uploading an Overlay
a. Select Click to Upload an Overlay
b. Browse your computer for a video, give the overlay a name and
description. Select Save.

Step 3: Creating an aura from the trigger and overlay
a. The trigger image will appear with the video overlay shown over the top
of it. You can move the overlay and resize it, as required.
b. It is also possible to add more than one
overlay to a Trigger image. For example
here an action has been added that once
the learner has used the trigger image to
watch the video overlay they will then be
taken to see another video on YouTube
which shows the same technique actually being used in industry.

Watch the YouTube video to learn more
about setting up multiple overlay actions.
c. At this point you can select Preview to see
what your AR looks like and how the actions,
if used, work. This allows you to see the Aura
before you make it public. To do this you
need to download the Aurasma App and login using the same account
details.
d. You are now ready to finalise your resource. To help others to find it
easily when using their Aurasma App, you can add a #Hashtag. It
would make sense to use the same #Hashtag for all resources from the
organisation/department/project. The learner can then enter the
Hashtag in the search box within the App and see all available public
videos with the Hashtag
Step 4: Sharing your Auras
a. Once made you need to ensure that students can
find and see your Auras. They need to be made
public and you can use Hashtags as explained in
the previous clip. Your learners can also follow you,
as that might do on Twitter. This video tutorial will
explain how.
b. Print out your Trigger image, it needs
to be as good quality print as you
can make it. Each time learners use
Aurasma and find a Trigger image, it
will initiate the appropriate overlay(s).
It helps to have some text within the
image.
