Antonio Gauzon MD,FPPA,FPCAM is the President of the Philippine College of Addiction Medicine and the Chairman of the Committee On Drug Education of the Bacolod City Anti-Drug Abuse Council. REACH Drug Rehabilitation Center in Paglaum Village, Bacolod City REACH, Inc. is a non-stock, non-profit corporation founded in 1984 by concerned members of the Christian Family Movement for the primary purpose of rehabilitating drug dependents and substance abusers, and helping them return to their families as useful members of society. REACH Drug Rehabilitation Center is the first such facility accredited in Western Visayas by the Dangerous Drugs Board. Approximately 1/3 of the Center's monthly expense budget is subsidized by the City of Bacolod. The balance is covered by contributions from the families and by donations from the community. REACH accepts drug users who have been ordered to undergo treatment and rehabilitation by courts of justice but most of our patients/residents are voluntarily enrolled in the program by their parents, guardians, or relatives. Patients are mostly from Bacolod and the province but many come from other parts of the country. The sorry state of our only sofa represents the general condition of REACH facilities. Like our drug dependents, the structure & everything in it cry out for rehabilitation. Above, Residents learning First Aid techniques. Below, nursing students interacting with patients and supervising group activities. The main dormitory can use a new ceiling, tiles on the floor, cabinets for the residents, mattresses, and a fresh coat of paint to brighten up the room. The Center caters primarily to drug dependents from low-income families that cannot afford treatment in private institutions outside Negros Occidental but do not want their children and loved ones far away in government run rehabilitation centers in Metro-Manila. Because of the intended clientele, as of 2011, the monthly contribution for Bacolod residents is a minimal P7,000.00. Monthly revenues are barely sufficient for operating expenses and REACH usually has residents whose families cannot pay regularly. After more than twenty years, the rehabilitation center is badly in need of repair and upgrading. Despite the meagreness of our resources, the work continues. Without a local center, drug dependents would have nowhere to go. Without REACH, they may become the murderers, rapists, and gangsters whose next victim may well be someone we care for.
