OV November Board Junior transition report

Board report - Junior Transition project November 2016
Completed:
 Promotion of Primary School champs to juniors on contact lists
 Preparation of promotional material for Primary Champs: postcard (one for each
student); letter to parents about further O opportunities (to talented students)
 Distribution of Sprint and Park/street brochures and magazines at Primary Champs
to interested students
 Promotion of Sprint into Spring series to juniors on contact lists
 Weekly “Student News” column in OV email news detailing good results and
improving orienteers and upcoming events or training
 Collaboration with Board and Finnish coaches to organise a coaching session for
newcomers after Primary Champs (Nov 20)
 Introduction to PM Kate Morris
Ongoing:
 Brief catch-up with any school students and parents seen while attending SIS events
and Primary Champs myself
 Promotion of appropriate OV coaching sessions to juniors on contact list
 Distribution of park/street brochures to schools invited to attend east and west
school series for first time
 Promote orienteering opportunities to secondary students leading into the selection
events for the schools’ team 2017 and secondary champs in May 2017
 Research student/junior squads in other states and NZ and make a recommendation
to the Board on how to proceed with the Vic Squad for 2017
 Connect interested students and families with OV and clubs
Suggestions:
 Appoint a paid (preferably youngish) park/street person with coaching experience
(or willing to complete free online introductory course) to meet and greet, lead
instructors from nightly organising clubs and provide feedback following events, for
schools entering Eastern series, as I cannot commit to attending this series. This
person should attend the series events and probably 2-3 weeks prior as a minimum
as some schools will come to earlier events.
 Promote further orienteering to schools which book coaching sessions either
through Sporting Schools program or OV Peta Whitford. This could be as simple as
providing a postcard (cost aprox. 20c each) to take home (detailing various types of
orienteering, student specific info and contact info); a generic promo for the school’s
newsletter; or to run an event before or after school nearby, or a series of such
events if a cluster of schools in one area.
 Look at 2017 calendar to ensure there is a good selection pathway for secondary
students into the Squad and State team. Schools may need to be made aware of
bush events prior to the Secondary Champs in May so that interested talented
students may gain experience and have more than one week to consider nominating
for the squad or state team.


Promote the MTBO summer and winter series to schools regularly attending school
MTBO Champs by sending flyers. Appoint a paid young MTBO rider to meet and
greet any students attending such events.
