James Mortimer Ltd Autumn 2016 - Seed Dressings Explained. We thought it would be a good idea to give you details of the extensive range of seed treatments available for Autumn 2016. Redigo Pro - winter & spring wheat, spring oats and barley, rye and triticale. Active ingredients Prothiconzole and tebuconazole. Without question the best single purpose treatment for wheat as it protects against all important seed and soil-borne wheat diseases. Its two advanced actives work together by acting inside the germinating seedlings. Broad –spectrum control: Septoria – seedling blight and stem base browning : improves the health of stem base bases by reducing symptoms caused by Microdochium nivale and Fusarium SPP. Loose smut in winter & spring barley. Seed-and soil-borne bunt. Blue mould. Ergot: reduces germination of treated ergot particles. Leaf stripe – partial control of Pyrenophora Graminea in winter and spring barley (not crops grown for multiplication). For more information on Redigo Pro, please see www.bayercropscience.co.uk. Redigo Deter – winter wheat & barley, oats, rye and triticale Active substances: prothioconazole and clothianidin. Redigo Deter is a combination insecticide and fungicide seed treatment for use on winter cereals including all varieties of wheat, oats, rye, triticale and barley. It can help you maximise healthy crop establishment by reducing slug damage in the early growth stages and providing extended control against Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV). Highlights of the 2015 season Get the best possible returns: Redigo Deter continues to deliver 2.15 t/ha higher yield in wheat and 2.75 t/ha in barley (vs. untreated control. Average of Bayer CropScience BYDV trials 2006-11). Drill when it’s right for you: Redigo Deter is, in fact, particularly suitable for later drilling. Enjoy simpler management: Redigo Deter controls pest problems made worse by warm, wet conditions, so there’s no need to go on the land. It also helps keep timings open for post-emergence herbicides, especially black-grass. One of the major benefits of Redigo Deter is the fact that it reduces the need for other treatments such as foliar sprays and slug pellets. This makes it much easier for you to manage your workload in the autumn. Redigo Deter maximises establishment of seedlings and reduces autumn losses by minimising pest and virus damage. Safe for use on all cereals planted between 1 July and 31 December: Increases crop stand. Reduces the number of foliar insecticides or slug pellets. Provides additional activity on minor or regional pests such as wireworm. Important things to remember: Seed treated with Redigo Deter must not be sown between 1 January and 30 June. Make sure that the seed is covered by soil and drilled to a uniform depth (around 4 cm). Always store Redigo Deter safely. Clear up any spillages immediately. Remember that Redigo Deter prevents slug damage to the seed but not the leaf. If aphid fly-in is heavy or prolonged, a follow-up treatment will be required. Where slugs are a risk, we recommend that you also use a good-quality slug pellet at early crop emergence (www.bayercropscience.co.uk). Raxil Star - spring and winter barley Raxil Star is a specialist fungicide seed treatment for spring and winter barley. It protects your crop from the broadest spectrum of seed-borne diseases, helps ensure excellent establishment and improves crop performance and quality. Controls seed-borne net blotch, loose smut, leaf stripe and covered smut. Reduces Fusarium and Microdochium seedling blight and stem-base browning. Optimises establishment. Allows retrieval of infected certified seed stocks. For more information on Raxil Star please see www.bayercropscience.co.uk. Deter – winter barley, wheat, oats, rye and triticale We have a limited supply of Deter. As the name suggests Deter gives benefits of Redigo Deter, without the inclusion of a single purpose dressing. The advantage of Deter is that it can be co-applied with other specialist seed treatments to best meet your individual requirements. A good example would be on a variety with moderate rating to Yellow Rust etc, you could use Jockey + Deter (Jockey has Beret Gold within its formulation as the single purpose seed treatment) Jockey – winter wheat and barley 167 g/l fluquinconazole + 31.2 g/l prochloraz A powerful systematic fungicidal dual purpose seed treatment targeted at second wheats and first wheats with lower disease resistance to yellow rust etc. In addition to increased root mass, improved anchorage, take-all control and improved standing power, work at ADAS has shown Jockey increases root length density in the top 25cm of the soil, improving the crop’s ability to scavenge for water and nutrients. As well as rooting benefits Jockey seed treatment also gives good protection against early season Yellow rust and Brown rust, delays development of Septoria tritici and controls all major seed and soil-borne diseases, including Fusarium Seedling Blight and Bunt. Benefits of Jockey Protects the seed, the root and leaf. Enhanced root development. Increased root mass and root length. Improved anchorage. Reduction in Septoria tritici, yellow and brown rust. Protection against take all. When to use Jockey Second wheats or 1st wheats after set-a-side at risk of take-all. For enhanced rooting benefits to optimise crop establishment. Brown and yellow rust risk situations and high Septoria tritici sites. Seed and soil –borne disease control. Advantages of Jockey Increased reliability of disease control where it is not possible to apply T0. Reduces risk if T1 is delayed. Improves crop establishment. Reduction of take-all in winter wheat and winter barley. Consistent average yield increase over 10 years of trials. We can offer a two thirds rate of Jockey (First wheat). Galmano – Winter wheat A very similar product to Jockey. Active substances: fluquinconazole. Increases vigour and yield. Enhances drought tolerance. Strengthens stems and reduces lodging. Provides early control of yellow rust. Ideally suited for co-application with Redigo Deter. The important thing to remember is that Galmano does not have a single purpose dressing within its formulation. We would add Redigo Pro or Redigo Deter. You can have a 3 litre rate (first wheat), or 4.5 litre rate (second wheat). Jockey / Galmano – clarification of marketing arrangements. Both products to be taken off the market. We can sell for the whole of autumn 2016. We can (subject unsold treat grain from 2016 harvest, up to June 2017. In other words we could leave seed wheat on farm and dress in Spring 2017. No more Jockey or Galmano will be manufactured or supplied to us. Limited stocks. A great shame ! As with Chinook, Cruser etc, yet another dent in your armoury against keeping disease in crops at bay. Latitude – winter wheat & barley 125 g / litre (11.83% w/w) of Silthiofam. The only specialist take-all seed treatment: Maximises yield and quality wherever take-all is a problem. Increases yield and quality of winter cereals. Provides facility to drill second wheat earlier. Improves nutrient and water uptake. Reduces take all. Must be co-applied with a single purpose treatment. Can be co-applied with Redigo Deter. The highest price seed dressing, the reality is most people who try it are converted and use each year. www.monsanto-ag.co.uk Austral Plus –wheat, barley and oats AUSTRAL PLUS is a co-formulation of fludioxonil and tefluthrin for the control of a range of seed and soil borne diseases as well as Wheat Bulb Fly and Wireworm, in wheat, barley and oats. Austral plus has a single purpose treatment within its formulation. www.syngenta.co.uk Manganese – winter and spring cereals We use De Sangosse New Manganese Solution (1.25 g/l as elemental Mn). Manganese is an essential component of plant growth. The total amount of Manganese (Mn) in soils is typically around 0.25%, and is normally in the range of 0.02 to 1%. Manganese is present in greater quantities than other trace elements, with the exception of iron. Its concentration typically exceeds that of macronutrients, such as Phosphorus and Sulphur, and often that of Nitrogen. Consequently, where plant deficiencies occur, it is not because the soil is low in total Manganese, but because most of it is present in forms which are not available for plant uptake. Manganese deficiency occurs in plants grown in alkaline soils, but it is common elsewhere. Toxicity occurs on very acid and poorly drained soils. Kick-Off – for cereals, pulses, oilseed rape and maize Kick-Off contains a high level of phosphite plus a good level of zinc both of which stimulate speedy root growth and development. Coupled to these is manganese at 60% of the inclusion rate of most standalone manganese seed treatments. Fully miscible with other seed treatment fungicides/insecticides and completely safe to the germinating seed Kick-Off is applied at 2.5 to 3.5l/tonne seed. The product underwent further development in 2012 with trials carried out in Yorkshire, Lancashire, Essex and Shropshire. Trial 1 A 11% yield response (0.73 tonnes/ha) was achieved in a fully replicated winter wheat trial with a programme of Kick-Off seed treatment followed by an application of Fighter Foliar Phosphite at T0. The trial on the variety Cocoon was located at Market Weighton on the Yorkshire Wolds. At £175 per tonne the response was worth £122. Deducting treatment costs of £32.50 gave a net return of almost £100/ha. The above trial is a little outdated £175 for feed wheat!! The point is that Kick off is a great product and can be applied to barley, wheat and oilseed rape. It is good value for money and well worth consideration. What’s in KICK-OFF Phosphorous 180g/l as a phosphite/phosphate mix. Manganese 80g/l; equivalent to a 2/3 rate of a standalone manganese dressing. Potassium 40g/l for enzyme manufacture which then stimulate cell division. Nitrogen 20g/l fundamental for protein synthesis and cell development. Zinc 16g/l important component of plant enzymes. Sulphate 10g/l complements the nitrogen. Amino Acids Assists in protein synthesis. Kick off seed treatment - www.fielder-nutrition.co.uk There is a lot of information within this leaflet, it is well worth a read to ensure you understand the choice of products in the market. Please do not hesitate in contacting us to arrange a visit to your farm to discuss individual requirements / objectives. Using the best seed treatments available are a sound investment, especially on varieties with specific weaknesses. Redigo Deter, Galmano, Jockey, Latitude, Kick off have become very popular over the past few years, it is a great shame that Galmano and Jockey are soon to disappear. We have not been involved with Kinto single purpose seed treatment because of our close association with Bayer. Kinto will disappear after Autumn 2016. Please be aware that when you are quoted for single purpose treatments there is a wide range of products, some of which are inferior in quality. Using Redigo Pro & Raxil Star offer, without question the best option for single purpose dressings. One important thing to note is that both Redigo Pro & Raxil Star are applied at low application rates: Redigo Pro (0.5 litres per tonne on feed wheat, 0.67 litres tonne on barley) .Raxil Star –(0.5 litres per tonne on barley). Our Bayer Evolution seed treater is capable of applying a full range of seed treatments at extremely accurate application rates . If the products are not applied with high levels of accuracy you will lose the advantage of the treatments. Simon W.
