Loving Your Neighbor
I Thessalonians 4:9-12
I Thessalonians 4:9-12
9 Now
as to the love of the brethren, you have no
need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves
are taught by God to love one another; 10 for indeed
you do practice it toward all the brethren who are in
all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, to excel
still more, 11 and to make it your ambition to lead a
quiet life and attend to your own business and work
with your hands, just as we commanded you, 12 so
that you will behave properly toward outsiders and
not be in any need.
RESPONSIBILITY TO THE BRETHREN
The command to love “the brethren” is
clear in Scripture.
Hebrews 13:1
1
Let love of the brethren continue.
I Peter 1:22; 2:17
1:22 Since
you have in obedience to the
truth purified your souls for a sincere
love of the brethren, fervently love one
another from the heart,
2:17 Honor
all people, love the
brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.
I John 3:14, 17-18
14 We
know that we have passed out of death
into life, because we love the brethren. He
who does not love abides in death. … 17 But
whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his
brother in need and closes his heart against
him, how does the love of God abide in him?
18 Little children, let us not love with word or
with tongue, but in deed and truth.
RESPONSIBILITY TO THE BRETHREN
The command to love “the brethren” is
clear in Scripture.
Paul’s readers practiced this –
throughout Macedonia.
The challenge: To do more!
I Thessalonians 4:1
1
Finally then, brethren, we request and
exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as
you received from us instruction as to
how you ought to walk and please God
(just as you actually do walk), that you
excel still more.
II Thessalonians 1:3
3 We
ought always to give thanks to God
for you, brethren, as is only fitting,
because your faith is greatly enlarged,
and the love of each one of you toward
one another grows ever greater;
Galatians 5:13
13 For
you were called to freedom,
brethren; only do not turn your freedom
into an opportunity for the flesh, but
through love serve one another.
We Show Love By …
• Addressing physical needs.
• Bearing one another’s burdens.
• Offering encouragement.
• Shepherding or teaching.
RESPONSIBILITY TO “OUTSIDERS”
We are to be careful of our example.
Matthew 5:14-16
14 “You
are the light of the world. A city set
on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does
anyone light a lamp and put it under a
basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives
light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your
light shine before men in such a way that
they may see your good works, and glorify
your Father who is in heaven.
I Timothy 3:7
7 And
he must have a good reputation
with those outside the church, so that
he will not fall into reproach and the
snare of the devil.
RESPONSIBILITY TO “OUTSIDERS”
We are to be careful of our example.
There is likely a specific issue under
consideration here – Anticipated
Parousia Frenzy
II Thessalonians 3:10-12
10 For
even when we were with you, we used to
give you this order: if anyone is not willing to
work, then he is not to eat, either. 11 For we
hear that some among you are leading an
undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but
acting like busybodies. 12 Now such persons
we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus
Christ to work in quiet fashion and eat their
own bread.
Three Problems with
Their Behavior
• Sets a bad example of laziness (sloth)
• Others have to support them/family
Ephesians 4:28
28 He
who steals must steal no longer;
but rather he must labor, performing with
his own hands what is good, so that he
will have something to share with one
who has need.
Three Problems with
Their Behavior
• Sets a bad example of laziness (sloth)
• Others have to support them/family
• They turn into busybodies
I Timothy 5:13
13 At
the same time they also learn to be
idle, as they go around from house to
house; and not merely idle, but also
gossips and busybodies, talking about
things not proper to mention.
RESPONSIBILITY TO “OUTSIDERS”
We are to be careful of our example.
There is likely a specific issue under
consideration here.
What does the world see in us?
WHAT DO THEY SEE IN US ?
