2017 Junior Golf Handbook
Dear Member,
On behalf of the Professional Staff and Junior Golf Committee, we would like to thank you
for your consideration and support of our Junior Golf Program. This handbook is designed
to give you easy access to the majority of programs that constitute our Junior Golf Program.
Our ‘squad-based’ system, one meant to help children and families find a clearer pathway to
achieve whatever golf goals they may have, continues to grow in size and effectiveness.
Please take special care in reading the new Junior Golf Outline, particularly as it relates to
programming centered on ‘Squads’. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please
feel free to contact us at anytime.
Sincerely,
Brian McLelland (Junior Golf Chair)

Programming is separated into five ‘Squads’ (Mulligan, Par, Birdie, Eagle, Ace).
Squad members have their own bag tags and shirts to identify which Squad they are a
member of.
New junior golf participants will test into their appropriate Squad.
Movement upwards to a more advanced Squad requires graduating – the tasks to
graduate are objective and outlined. To ‘test up’, all one must do is make
arrangement to take a test with Junior Golf Coordinator & PGA Professional Chris
Young.
During testing to move to a higher Squad, each Junior will benefit from two ‘doovers’. Juniors can use these ‘do-overs’ to try to complete a portion of the test that
might have been failed. Testing will be done in order of activities listed – if a junior
doesn’t make it through the test using their two ‘do-overs’, the test will be ended and
the junior must wait 7 days to re-test.
Evening Squad practices will be held throughout the season (schedule provided
separately).
Participation in any junior golf activity or program requires membership in the
PCCJGA (Philadelphia Cricket Club Junior Golf Association). The annual fees are
as follows:
o Junior part of a Flourtown golf membership - $25
o Junior part of an Intermediate membership - $50
o Collected fees are pooled and used for enhanced programming and
instruction; awards and uniforms; giveaways and goodies; and more. The fee
is automatically billed to your member account the first time your junior
participates in any kind of junior golf program.

Instructional Programs
Golf clinics for juniors of all skill levels and ages are available at various times and dates throughout the year.
Clinics are tailored to all ages and skill levels and include instruction and on-course activities commensurate
with the group demographics. Each program indicates the Squads eligible to participate – this is so that juniors
in each program have the appropriate skills to participate without negatively impacting the learning experiences
of others in the group.
Junior Golf Association (PCCJGA)
Participation in any junior golf activity or program requires membership in the PCCJGA (Philadelphia Cricket
Club Junior Golf Association). The annual fees are as follows:
• Junior part of a full golf membership - $25
• Junior part of an Intermediate membership - $50
• Collected fees are pooled and used for enhanced programming and instruction; awards and uniforms;
giveaways and goodies; and more. The fee is automatically billed to your member account the first
time your junior participates in any kind of junior golf program.
Junior Certifications
Juniors who have achieved Birdie Squad status are certified to use the Flourtown facilities without an adult,
provided a membership at Flourtown is active.
Colonial League Interclub Matches
This program provides an opportunity for our certified juniors to test their skills against players from
Huntingdon Valley, Manufacturers, Commonwealth, Sandy Run, Whitemarsh Valley, and Saucon Valley.
Sixteen of our juniors will compete in each event. Please contact the professional staff for additional
information on the Colonial League.
GAP/PGA/AJGA/IJGT
There are many opportunities for juniors to supplement their club schedules with participation in events hosted
by the Golf Association of Philadelphia; the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Golf Tour; the American Junior
Golf Association; the International Junior Golf Tour; and many other venues. Professional staff is available to
help golfers navigate the various opportunities, and how to secure a spot in chosen events.
PGA Junior League
The Cricket Club participates in the Philadelphia Section of the PGA Junior Golf League. The league provides
playing opportunities for Par/Birdie Squad juniors to play in a team competition against other area clubs.
Please review the flyer for more information.

Colonial League participants are required to wear a team uniform for all events. The uniform will be

Wednesday, June 28th at Sandy Run

Tuesday, July 11th at Huntingdon Valley
Thursday, July 20th at Saucon Valley
NOTES
 Team assignments will be based on skills, level of commitment, and squad level.
 Boys and girls are needed to complete the team. Each week we need 9 18-holers (including 1 girl
and one junior under age 14) and 3 9-holers (including one junior under age 14)
 You must be able to carry your own bag while playing in order to participate.
 The philosophy of the Junior Golf Committee with respect to the Colonial League Matches is to
put forth the best team possible while also being sensitive to giving the maximum number of
players an opportunity to play. It is not a ‘win at all costs’ type of event – care will be taken to
ensure players who signup enjoy their commitment to participating.

Etiquette ‘Cheat Sheet’
 Replace your divot taken from the fairway.
 Shout ‘Fore’ whenever you or your playing partners hit a ball that leaves
golf course property or heads towards a visible person.
 When taking a practice swing, be sure you have a ‘safe zone’ around you.
 Rake any footprints you cause in a bunker.
 Fix your ball mark and one other on every green.
 Do not slide or place your golf bag on a green.
 Replace the flagstick properly and gently.
 Be punctual for all starting times (arrive 10 minutes before).
 Respect neighboring residents and yell ‘fore’ if you hit a wild shot. Never hit a
shot off of adjacent property. Be sensitive when retrieving a ball from adjacent
property.
 Do not use the course as a bathroom.
 Place trash in trash cans and pick up trash seen on the property.
 Never ‘jump-around’ between holes.
 Pick the right set of tees. Don't let your ego get in the way of having a good time
- pick the set of tees at a yardage you can handle.
 Worry about the group in front of you and the pace rating and avoid the 'well no
one is pushing us' mentality. If you play in 4 hours and 45 minutes, there is no
way anyone behind you can play any faster if there are consecutive tee times,
right? Remember - the correct position is behind the group in front of you, not
in front of the group behind you!
 The pace of play rating for the course is 4 hours. Failure to maintain a proper
pace of play negatively impacts the experience of others.
 Keep your eye on the ball. Many lost balls are a result of not marking the flight
with a landmark, or just plain not looking after you hit your shot.
 Keep score by the tee of the next hole.
Ten Most Commonly Broken Rules in Golf
1.
Gimme Putts – Except in Match Play, the ball must be put into the hole on every hole. Too often people feel
that a putt is “good” when playing a normal stroke play round and pick it up without tapping it into the hole.
2.
Lost Ball – The proper procedure when a ball is lost outside of a water hazard is to return to the spot from
which the original ball was played, drop a ball and add one penalty stroke. The common error here occurs when
a player correctly adds the penalty stroke, but drops the ball in the wrong place, the area which they believe ball
is.
3.
Out of Bounds – The proper procedure when a ball is lost hit out of bounds is the same as a lost ball. The
player is to return to the spot from which the original ball was played, drop a ball and add one penalty stroke.
The common error here occurs when a player proceeds as if the out of bounds stakes were hazard stakes and
drops the ball at the point where it crossed out of bounds.
4.
Teeing off outside the markers – The teeing ground is defined as “a rectangular area two club-lengths in depth,
the front and sides of which are defined by the outside limits of the two tee markers.” Far too often we see
people tee off slightly ahead of the defined teeing ground, most likely because they do not know this definition.
In Stroke Play competitions, the penalty for this is two shots and the player must play another ball from within
the teeing ground. In Match Play, the player’s opponent has the option of making the player re-tee without
penalty.
5.
Touching the line of putt – A player may not touch the line of putt with either their hand or putter unless it is
to remove a loose impediment (sand, leaves, etc.) or to repair damage (old hole plugs or ball marks). This means
that touching the line to indicate the line to a playing partner is a penalty. Repairing spike marks or footprints are
also a penalty. The penalty is two shots for such an infraction.
6.
Improving Your Lie – Many times when we play preferred lies or “Winter Rules” people take that to mean that
they can improve their lie anywhere. This is not correct; this condition applies only to the fairways. A ball may
not be moved in the rough. Also, sometimes when we are playing the ball down, people feel that they are
allowed to move the ball out of a depression or divot, especially in the fairway. This also is not correct; the ball
must be played out of bad lies even in the fairway.
7.
Grounding Club in a Hazard – When a ball comes to rest in a hazard, either a bunker or water hazard, players
are prohibited from grounding their club. Far too often players are seen grounding their club in a hazard,
especially in bunkers. In addition, players are not allowed to test the conditions (take practice swings) or remove
loose impediments. The penalty for this is two shots.
8.
Asking for Advice – A player may not ask an opponent or fellow competitor for advice when preparing to hit
their shot. They may not ask what club the other player hit or how much he felt that wind or a hill effected the
playing of that shot. Similarly, a player may not volunteer any of this information from their own shot.
9.
How to Drop - There is one proper way to drop the golf ball. The rules state “A ball must be dropped by the
player himself. He must stand erect, hold the ball at shoulder height arm’s length and drop it.” Any method
other than this is a one stroke penalty. Many people just toss a ball on the ground or do any number of other
things to violate this rule.
10. Water Hazards and Options – Many people are not aware of the proper options when they hit a ball into a
water hazard. First of all players must know that there are two different types of water hazards, regular water
hazards (yellow stakes) and lateral water hazards (red stakes). For regular water hazards, there are three options:
1) Play the ball as it lies, with no penalty (don’t ground your club)
2) Under penalty of one stroke, drop a ball as near as possible to the original location
3) Under penalty of one stroke, drop a ball anywhere behind the point where the ball last crossed the
margin of the hazard, keeping that point between themselves and the hole.
For lateral hazards, there are five options. They are the three options for regular hazards plus two more. Those
two additional options are:
4) Under penalty of one stroke, drop a ball no nearer to the hole and within two club-lengths of the point
where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard.
5) Under penalty of one stroke, drop a ball no nearer to the hole and within two club-lengths of a point
on the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole as where the ball last crossed the
margin of the hazard.


Parents,
The PGA Junior League Golf (PGA JLG) is designed to better socialize the game of golf for juniors ages 9- 13. The program features a team-vsteam format in a structured league providing a popular, less stressful, scramble format. PGA JLG is a great way to get the kids involved in golf.
This program was started in 2011 by the PGA with the goal to foster an enjoyment of the game that will last a lifetime.
Fun Not Stressful
In PGA JLG the focus is to have fun playing golf with your friends. PGA JLG teams want to win, but the stress often associated with individual
medal play tournaments is eliminated by the low-pressure format and the camaraderie of playing on a team with your friends.
Team Not Individual
There is no individual scoring in PGA JLG. The two-player scramble format allows for all participants to feel connected with the team. Strong
play is rewarded, while a poor shot does not lose the hole. Players of all skill levels are welcome and will contribute to the team’s success. Every
player gets to play...in every competition!

Each team-vs-team competition in PGA JLG consists of four 9-hole matches. Each 9-hole match is broken down into three 3-hole segments that
we call “Flags”. Actual “Flag” stickers are awarded to participants upon capturing a 3-hole point for their team. The stickers are collected by the
players throughout the season, and proudly displayed on their PGA JLG bag-tags as a sign of accomplishment.
Uniforms with Numbers
One of PGA JLG's most popular innovations is our numbered team jerseys. Introduced as part of the uniform for the inaugural JLG World
Series in 2011, numbered jerseys will be supplied to all players and teams in 2015. Kids are accustomed to wearing numbered uniforms in other
youth sports, so why not golf!!! This helps build a sense of identity for each participant on their PGA JLG team.
Advancement
After the regular-season City Champions are crowned, All-Star Teams are formed to compete in the advancement phase of PGA JLG.
Advancement will take place through Regional competitions which will produce Regional Champions. These Regional Champions will compete
in the PGA JLG Championship.

Skill Level
PGA JLG is an inclusive program that encourages all skill levels from Par squad to Ace squad. Our scramble format provides a comfort zone for
the developing player. For the accomplished Junior who may already be competing in individual tournaments, PGA JLG offers the opportunity
to develop leadership skills in a team setting and most importantly, play on a team with friends.
Parent Involvement
Similar to other youth recreational sports, PGA JLG encourages and relies on parental involvement. In addition to making sure participants get to
matches and practices, parents can play an important role in the success of their team:
•
Team captain/assistant
•
Team-mother
•
Match monitor/scorer
•
Player recruitment
