The Thunder picked up a victory over South Carolina earlier this month in Glens Falls by a score of 3-2. South Carolina has won four straight at home since returning from an 11-day trip up north. The Stingrays are tied for second place in the ECHL’s South Division standings with 61 total points after winning their first three games of the week. Adirondack is tied in third place in the North Division with 62 points, five points behind Manchester and one point behind Reading. Sunday’s meeting is the second and final of the regular season between the two teams. Stingrays Dethrone Monarchs With Sweep The South Carolina Stingrays used a hot start to get out ahead of the Manchester Monarchs and secure a 5-3 victory Saturday in front of a crowd of 8,106 fans on Pack The House Night at the North Charleston Coliseum. John Parker scored 16 seconds in and added another tally in the second period, while Marcus Perrier had a goal and two assists, and both Rob Flick and Domenic Monardo each had a goal and an assist. Joe Cannata made 24 saves to earn his third consecutive win for the Stingrays in between the pipes. Monardo has now picked up a point in nine straight games and has 28 points on the season (nine goals, 19 assists). Overall, the shots were even for the game at 27-27. Most recently the Thunder lost two games in overtime to the Atlanta Gladiators on Friday and Saturday. Peter MacArthur has the team’s scoring lead with 40 points (14 goals, 26 assists) through 45 games. Two of the team’s leaders in Ty Loney (40 points) and and Mikkel Aagaard (39 points) have moved up to the AHL. Stepan Falkovsky has turned up the offense from the blue line and leads ECHL defenseman with 11 power play goals. His 16 goals on the season lead the league among defensemen. Goaltenders Drew Fielding and Mason McDonald have both seen action in net for the Thunder this season. Fielding has a goals against average of 2.74 and a save percentage at .903 while McDonald has a GAA at 2.85 and an SVP of .893. Stingrays History vs. Adirondack South Carolina faced Adirondack three times during the 201516 regular season, the Thunder’s first in the ECHL. Although the Stingrays defeated Adirondack 5-1 in the teams’ first ever meeting on Jan. 8, the Thunder got revenge with a 4-2 win the following night and also defeated SC 3-2 in overtime on March 5. The two then met up for a memorable 7-game series during last spring’s Kelly Cup Playoffs, with the Stingrays taking the final two games in front of their home crowd to clinch the series win. The first meeting between the two on Feb. 7 was a 3-2 victory for the Thunder. Monardo Making A Difference Forward Domenic Monardo has been the hottest Stingrays’ forward recently and is currently riding a nine-game point streak with 16 points on six goals and 10 assists during the span. Monardo has goals in five of his last six games and has also recorded at least three shots on goal in 10 of his last 11 outings. The Oakville, Ont. native now has 28 points (nine goals, 19 assists) in 36 games with South Carolina this year and has moved up to third in scoring among active Stingrays players. Flick Catches Fire Rob Flick took it upon himself to erase an early deficit Friday night, scoring once in each period to record the first hat trick of the season for a Stingrays skater. Flick also had an assist on a goal by Scott Tanski, and engaged in some physical play by dropping the gloves for a fight late in the first period. He finished the contest with 11 penalty minutes. The forward leads the team in both goals (24) and points (48) through 49 games this year. In addition, Flick has scored points in 13 straight home games, dating back to Dec. 10. The stretch is tied for the longest in the league this season. Perrier Producing Offensively Marcus Perrier has thrived offensively during the current home stand for South Carolina and has now scored goals in back-to-back games for the Stingrays. The forward also added two asssits in Saturday night’s 5-3 win over Manchester and now has 18 points on the season (seven goals, 11 assists) through 51 games. Zajac had 46 points (10g, 36a) through 48 games this season. The Winnipeg, Man. native is in his second year with South Carolina after joining the team midway through the 2015-16 season. Weinstein returns to South Carolina after playing in five games with Hershey and picking up two assists to go along with a +3 rating. A native of Los Angeles, Weinstein has suited up for 34 games on the blue line with South Carolina this season and is the scoring leader among defenseman with 21 points (3g, 18a). Stingrays Acquire Rookie Forward Megannety South Carolina traded for the ECHL rights to Patrick Megannety from the Allen Americans Thursday in exchange for future considerations. Megannety had been a member of the Pensacola Ice Flyers in the SPHL, playing in 26 games this season. The forward has totaled 15 points on eight goals and seven assists during his rookie year. A rookie out of Oakville, Ont., Megannety started his year with Allen, playing in one game. He spent four seasons at Clarkson University from 2012-16, playing in 142 games and totaling 57 points (22 goals, 35 assists). Penalty Killing Prowess Recently the Stingrays penalty kill has been among the best in the ECHL and the team is now the top killing rate in the league at 85.8% after holding Manchester to an 0-for-5 mark on Friday night and 0-for-3 on Saturday. South Carolina has not allowed a power play goal in nine of their last 10 games. Flick’s Hat Trick Powers Rays Over Monarchs Rob Flick had four points Friday night, scoring the first hat trick of the season for the South Carolina Stingrays in a 5-2 defeat of the Manchester Monarchs at the North Charleston Coliseum. Colton Saucerman also factored into the scoring with three assists, while both Domenic Monardo and Steve Weinstein had two helpers for the Stingrays. Goaltender Joe Cannata made 27 saves to pick up his second win in as many starts for South Carolina. South Carolina won the special teams battle on the night, scoring on two of their three man-advantages in the game in addition to holding the Monarchs off the board at 0-for-5. By factoring in on the scoring, Monardo has extended his point streak to eight games, dating back to Feb. 3, which was a 3-2 win over the Monarchs in Manchester. Rays Overcome Early Deficit To Defeat Glads 4-2 The South Carolina Stingrays were down 2-0 after the first period but stormed back with four straight goals to overtake the Atlanta Gladiators by a score of 4-2 on Tuesday night at the North Charleston Coliseum. The first ECHL goal of Alex Brooks’ career turned out to be the game-winner in the third period for South Carolina, while Domenic Monardo scored for the fourth consecutive game and extended his point streak to seven contests. Goaltender Joe Cannata, who was reassigned to the Stingrays earlier in the day, made his first start for South Carolina and stopped 25 shots. Andrew Cherniwchan added insurance at 18:22 of the third with his sixth goal of the season from Monardo and Rob Flick.
