Inquiry Project:
Democracy In Ancient Athens
Inquiry Question: How fair,
equitable, and/or just was the
society and the government in ancient Athens?
Ancient Athens is the earliest documented form of democracy, but was it
democracy as we know it? As you know, Athenian society was divided into
classes with different roles and responsibilities. The government was also
divided into sections each with different responsibilities.
In this task, you will research the divisions within the government and their
roles in democracy. You will then decide how fair, equal, and just this
government was.
Process
Step 1: Planning - In a group of three (your choice), you will decide who
will be responsible for each of the three sections of government. Complete
the contract IN PEN stating which section each person will be responsible
for.
Step 2: Research - Create 5 open-ended questions that will guide your
research. Ensure that the questions are ones that require an explanation,
are detailed and specific and are relevant to your section of the government.
Using your textbook and the websites listed below, gather your information
and record it in the attached organizer. The contract and research will take
you two periods.

Step 3: Making Decisions - Once you have the information, teach your
other group members about the part of the government you researched. As
a group decide how fair, equitable, and just each part of the government
was. Ensure you have support for your decision with reasons.
Step 4: Presentation - Create a Google slide presentation to share your
research. Each group member is responsible for creating slides for their own
research section. Make sure to include your answer to the inquiry question.
Each group will present their Google slide presentation to the teacher.
