www.petanque.org.je THE P.B.S. JERSEY PETANQUE CLUB OPEN & MELEE 2011 SATURDAY 30TH APRIL & SUNDAY 1ST MAY We are writing to overseas clubs and past competitors a little earlier this year in the hope that you may be able to take advantage of early booking rates which are frequently offered on trips to Jersey. For those of you who haven’t previously taken part in our Open weekend may I explain how the weekend proceeds? Firstly, on Friday 29th April, starting at 6.30 p.m. we are holding a Vin d’Honneur in a marquee adjacent to our club house. We pride ourselves in not only making this a competitive weekend but also a very friendly and sociable one as well. The draw for the Open also takes place during the evening when you will be able to meet fellow competitors and opposition for the next day! The evening will finish around 7.45 p.m. The P.B.S.Open Doubles Competition The format provides everyone with a minimum of 6 games. The draw divides everyone into groups of four teams and on the Saturday morning each team will play the other three teams in their group. The teams will then be allocated to the four competitions according to the results. All group winners go into the Main competition – the second placed teams go into the Plate – the third placed into Consollage 1 and the fourth into Consollage 2. During the afternoon each team will play three games against others within their own competition i.e. Main, Plate, Consollage 1 and Consollage 2. The draw for these games will take on a “snake format”. On completion of these three games, the highest placed teams in each of the four competitions will play off against third placed teams and the seconds will play against the fourth. The winners of these two games will play off for first and second places whilst the two losing teams will be equal third. It may sound a little complicated but rest assured, it isn’t, and it all works out very well. There will be a Presentation Dinner in the evening at the Ommaroo Hotel and it would be good to see you all there, even if you haven’t been lucky enough to win a trophy. Friends and relatives will also be very welcome to join us for dinner, The Sunday Doubles Melee The Sunday melee will consist of four games. (2 before lunch and 2 after). There will be a draw for each game whereby both your partner and opponents will be chosen. To ensure we keep to a reasonable timetable, the 4 games will have a time limit. The day’s play should be completed by about 5.00 p.m. P.T.O. This year we are returning to our famous BBQ lunch. There will be a starter, the roast served with vegetables and new Jersey Royals plus a sweet. All this for £8.00 !! Unfortunately we cannot sell alcohol to accompany your lunch so, if you would like wine or beer, please feel free to bring it with you. Please ensure that ALL names are entered on your entry form (to include non-players who may wish to have lunch with us). On the Saturday there will be a full range of sandwiches to purchase throughout the day together with crisps, chocolates and cakes plus tea, coffee and soft drinks. Apart from the sandwiches everything else will also be available on the Sunday. We will also have a full range of cochonnets, measures, scorers, magnets, bags, sweaters, fleeces and tee shirts available for purchase. Should you wish to stay at the Ommaroo Hotel – the rates are £49.00 per person per night but we have negotiated a 20% discount which brings the price down to £39.20 per person per night. Please contact them direct on 01534 723493 or e-mail on [email protected] quoting the Jersey Petanque Club for the preferential rates. You will also need to quote the Ommaroo Hotel as there are other hotels belonging to the ‘Seabird Hotels Group’. There are many other hotels and guest houses in Jersey and should you wish get details of any of these please look at the Jersey Tourism website where I am sure you will be able to find something to suit you. Should you arrive earlier than Friday – you are more than welcome to come up to our terrains to practice at any time. A number of club members play from 2.00 p.m. on a Wednesday and, again, we would be delighted if you would like to join us. No licences are required to enter and play is governed by ‘The Official Rules of the Game of Petanque’. Please note that the ruling of the Disputes Committee must be final and enforced within five minutes of the dispute being adjudicated. A nominated interpreter will be present should a dispute involve a foreign team. The Jersey Petanque Club terrains are situated at Les Quennevais Sports Centre (some five miles outside St Helier and about one mile from the airport). Here we have our club house and sufficient terrains to accommodate 120 teams. There is a large car park approximately 100 yards from the terrains should you either bring your own car or hire one. Details of a coach service running to and from the Ommaroo Hotel each day can be found on the attached entry form. All enquiries and entry forms for the Open are to be sent to Gordon de Gruchy, [email protected] or telephone 01534 854357 The Jersey Petanque Club very much hopes that you will be able to join us for our 2011 P.B.S.
