Chess Rules
Categories
Participants must be born on or before 14th April 2011
Open
Format
There will be 5 rounds based on Swiss system and all players play in all rounds. It is not a knock-out.
Chess Clocks




Chess clocks will be used in all matches
Each player will have 15 minutes to complete all their moves
The player will lose the match if their time runs out
Training on how to use the chess clock will be given before Round 1, if required
Rules & Regulations











FIDE Laws of Chess will apply (https://www.fide.com/fide/handbook.html?id=171&view=article)
If a player fails to appear after 5 minutes of their match start time (see round timings below), then:
o Where possible, their opponent will be re-paired with another competitor and the original
match will be considered as forfeit (loss)
o If not possible, then their opponent will be declared the winner
The game shall be operated under “Touch Move” rule, that is:
o If a player deliberately touches his piece on the board, it must be moved if it has a legal
move.
o If the opponent’s piece was touched, it must be captured with a legal move.
Player who lets go of a piece after making a legal move cannot retract the move
3 completed Illegal moves will lose the game. First and second illegal move should be highlighted as a
warning by the opponent. You should bring this to the attention of game arbiter by raising your hand.
At the end of the game, both players must report the result to the game arbiter
In case of any issues or concern during the game, the player must stop the clock and raise their hand
for the attention of the arbiter
Electronic devices (including phones) must be switched off during play. If an electronic device makes a
noise during play then the game is lost.
Playing area will not have any spectator allowed. A separate spectator area will be setup for this
purpose.
Chess recording sheets will be available to all players but is not necessary for players to record their
games
Chess arbiter’s decision will be final
Pairing
Pairings for each round will be done by the Swiss system manager (www.swips.eu)
Scoring


Scoring is 1 point for a win, 0.5 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss
The top 3 players will be decided as follows in priority:
o Player with most points
o Sum of the points of each of the opponents of a player
o 5 minute Rapid play tie-breaker game
o Toss of coin

These timings are used to illustrate the general order of play. These timings and order are subject to change
based on a variety of factors, but are there to provide athletes with an idea of the general order and format of
the tournament
