AN UNDERGRADUATE CONFERENCE FOCUSING ON
CONTEMPORARY INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS RESEARCH AND POLICY
The following positions compose the Seventeenth Carroll Round Steering Committee:
Chair
The CR Chair is responsible for overseeing the work done by the Carroll Round Steering Committee. The Chair
will lead weekly meetings for the CRSC, as well as establish and enforce a conference planning timeline (and
appropriate deadlines). The Chair will stay aware of all work being done by the other committee members, as well
as assist these tasks when necessary. The Chair will be the primary conference liaison for contact with
Georgetown faculty and administration, and also be in contact with CR donors and participants. During the
conference itself, the Chair will oversee the setup, progress, and cleanup of all events, as well as following up on
the conference weekend duties of other committee members. The Chair will also take responsibility for overseeing
post-conference duties, including payment of expenses, budget finalization, and the recruitment process for a
successor committee. The Chair will also report in writing to the Carroll Round Advisory Panel at the end of each
semester regarding progress made in conference planning, and other notable developments.
Alumni Liaison
The chair of alumni relations is responsible for managing the development and integration of a global network of
Carroll Round alumni. First among these duties is to organize reunions and events for alumni, as well as manage
communications with alumni through updates and the publishing of the Carroll Round Source newsletter.
Secondly, the alumni liaison will also be expected to innovate the alumni network through the development of an
online and secure alumni database for the use of participants and alumni who want to connect through various
platforms. Finally, the alumni liaison will also work together with the Chair of Operating Funds to design and
implement fundraising programs targeted to alumni. As with each year, special emphasis will be placed to
incorporate all years of alumni into current events and programs, so as to build the strength of the alumni network
for years to come.
Carroll Round Proceedings Editor-in-Chief
The Carroll Round Proceedings Editor-in-Chief is responsible for preparing and overseeing the publication of the
papers presented at the previous Carroll Round in the Carroll Round Proceedings journal as well as online. This
will include collecting all the papers in a timely manner, as well as compiling, editing, and formatting the papers
into a final volume. Other CRSC members will be expected to contribute to these efforts, and the Editor-in-Chief
can work with the Chair to implement an appropriate timeline of working with the larger CRSC for editing
purposes. In addition to the creation of the Carroll Round Proceedings, the Editor-in-Chief is also encouraged to
promote its scholarly distribution and recognition, perhaps in conjunction with the Communications Chair.
Communications Chair
The Communications Chair will manage communication between the Carroll Round Steering Committee and its
public by appropriately promoting the Carroll Round as the brand for excellence in undergraduate economic
research. Firstly, this would include managing and generating media portrayal of the Carroll Round, by reaching
out to local and national media for coverage, as well as staying appraised of any relevant coverage of the Carroll
Round to include on the Carroll Round website. The Communications Chair will also chiefly be responsible for
updating the website, social media, and promotional materials (video, etc.). Secondly, the Communications Chair is
expected to engage with the other CRSC members (particularly with recruitment, alumni, and long-term chairs) to
help their efforts with appropriate media strategies. Finally, the Communications Chair will also be responsible for
creating a conference participant directory, as well as to coordinate any media-related tasks during the conference,
such as videography and photography.

Chair of Operating Funds
It is the responsibility of the Chair of Operating Funds to raise and manage funds for the Carroll Round. This
work will involve working with previous and new CR donors, and include ongoing communication with potential
donors. The Chair of Operating Funds will be expected to head these efforts for the entirety of the conference
year, and coordinate when necessary with the SFS Development Office. The Chair of Operating Funds will also
act as treasurer for the Steering Committee and will therefore be responsible for compiling a comprehensive
budget of all conference expenses and donations. This will include post-conference accounting through the end of
the fiscal year.
Logistics Chair
The Logistics Chair’s work will primarily focus on coordinating the necessary arrangements for conference venues,
meals, lodging, and other related tasks. This will involve reserving both on-campus and off-campus space. The
Logistics Chair will reserve the major (larger) conference venues themselves, and delegate work for researching and
securing other rooms to other members of the CRSC. The Logistics Chair will also be responsible for
coordinating their efforts with the SFS Dean’s Office, especially as concerns early contract negotiations. The work
will also involve making menu choices, seating charts, and rooming assignments for conference participants.
Programming Chair
The Programming Chair will oversee a variety of programming events for the wider Georgetown community
throughout the academic year prior to the conference in the Spring. The largest programming events are twofold.
The first is continuing the development of a Carroll Round Speaker’s Series, which invites a faculty to present their
research at an undergraduate-accessible level. Second is the Carroll Round Mentors Program, in which
upperclassmen on the Steering Committee meet with and guide participating underclassmen about economics at
Georgetown. In addition to the Speaker’s Series for academic faculty, the Programming Chair should work to host
talks and networking events with current practitioners of economics. The Programming Chair will work and
consult regularly with the Communications Chair and Long-Term Development Chair to market events to the
broader Georgetown community and to create a long-term standing for Carroll Round programming on campus.
Long-Term Development Chair
The Long-Term Development Chair will work with the steering committee to further the long-term aspirations of
the Carroll Round. This position will approach these aspirations by garnering institutional support on-campus
while pursuing financial support through grants as well. The Long-Term Development Chair will work closely with
the Office of Advancement, among other contacts, to develop long-term financial strategies, and will be
responsible for writing all grant applications. This position will also involve strengthening relationships with the
variety of parties already interested in the Carroll Round’s long-term development (such as the Advisory Panel and
Economics department), identifying new possible sources of funding, and organizing additional meetings focused
on long-term plans for the CR institution.
Recruitment Chair
The Recruitment Chair will oversee the conference recruitment, application, and registration process. During the
Fall semester, the primary task of the Recruitment Chair will be to promote and advertise the conference to other
universities. This effort will include creating a list of contacts in economics departments at major universities (in
the US and globally) and contacting these departments in order to solicit applications for the conference. The
Recruitment Chair will also be responsible for creating new methods of advertising the conference in order to
increase the scope of applicants and improve their quality. During the Spring semester, the Recruitment Chair will
work closely with the Applications Chair to oversee the paper selection process for the conference. While the
Applications Chair will take point on paper review and decisions, the Recruitment Chair will maintain contact with
applicants to ask for updates and inform them of decisions. In the final weeks prior to the conference, the
Recruitment Chair will be in close contact with participants in order to obtain necessary information and answer
any queries they might have about the conference.

Applications Chair
The Applications Chair will work closely with the Recruitment Chair to oversee recruitment efforts and the
application process. While these responsibilities are a joint effort the Applications Chair focuses more on internal
organization while the Recruitment Chair focuses more on external contact. During the fall semester, the primary
tasks of the Applications Chair revolve around recruitment. These will include updating contacts in economics
departments at major universities around the world and developing new methods of recruiting the highest quality
applicants. During the fall semester the Applications Chair will also brainstorm ways to improve application
review. In the spring semester, the Applications Chair will organize application review. This will include uploading
and updating application materials, leading application review sessions, and becoming familiar with submitted
papers. After final acceptance decisions have been made, the Applications Chair will group papers into
presentation sessions and oversee finding professors to chair each session.
Speaker Liaison
The Speaker Liaison is responsible for preparing the keynote speaking events at the Carroll Round conference.
This task will begin by contacting potential and appropriate speakers and securing a pair for the conference early
on. Communication between the speakers and the Carroll Round is primarily the responsibility of the Speaker
Liaison, yet is also copied to the Carroll Round email account for future reference. The Speaker Liaison’s main task
during the conference weekend will be representing the Carroll Round to the keynote speakers. In this way, the
Speaker Liaison’s tasks would include escorting the speakers to the conference, coordinating their
accommodations in tandem with the Logistics Chair, ensuring that the lectures run smoothly, and that speakers are
comfortable and receive honorary gifts. The Speaker Liaison would also make the arrangements for any other high
profile events, such as a Federal Reserve trip or alternative round table event, if the CRSC should decide such an
event would be desirable for the conference weekend.
