Dede Derby Street Nursery February Newsletter! General News All staff and children would like to welcome Miss Lynn back to Nursery following the birth of her beautiful baby girl, Eva May. The Nursery will be participating in Red Nose Day on the 15th of March. Red Noses will be available to purchase throughout the week and we will be selling cakes baked by children and staff. We have had offers from parents/carers to bake which is very much appreciated- any contributions are welcome. We will be holding an Easter Bonnet competition on Thursday 28th of March at 11am. Miss Ashley and Miss Maureen will judge the entries, there will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize. If your child does not attend Nursery on a Thursday morning please feel free to bring them along at 11am in their Easter Bonnets for the parade. Mindstretchers is a company made up of an enthusiastic and dedicated group of people who feel that all children are entitled to learn in a multi sensory and naturally creative environment- find out more at www.mindstretchers.co.uk. Janette Robertson from the company will be visiting the Nursery on Monday the 11th of March to introduce a variety of outdoor resources developed by the company. We are also purchasing the outdoor learning DVD from Mindstretchers where the founder, Claire Warden, shares her practice, philosophy and expertise that underpins the award winning Auchlone Nature Kindergarten in Scotland. Finally, one of our Mums is opening a beauty salon, Ciel, in the west end of Glasgow. To celebrate the opening all staff are going along on Friday evening for some well deserved pampering! Buttercup and Daisy Room During February the children in the Buttercup and Daisy Room had fun learning all about animals. We splashed in the water like ducks, read animal stories and used various feathers and fabrics to create pictures. We also investigated our sense of smell by exploring fresh mint and basil leaves, cinnamon sticks, orange, lemon and vanilla essence and coffee beans. Throughout March we will continue exploring our senses by introducing various sounds. We have linked this to children’s interest in animals by making an animal book in the 6 different languages the children and their families speak. Derby Street Nursery Kelvingrove, Glasgow February 2013 Newsletter 33 Thank you to all of the parents/carers who took the time to provide us with the translations. We have also started listening to Baby Boom Boom CDs which sing nursery rhymes in English and then German and Italian. As spring and Easter approaches, we will be going nature walks, taking part in an egg hunt and decorating our own eggs. We will be introducing rabbits and chicks to our animal theme. The boys and girls in the Buttercup and Daisy Room would like to wish May lots of luck in her move to the Bluebell Room. We’re sure she will have lots of fun. Finally we would like to welcome Miss Lynn back from her maternity leave. Bluebell Room In February we had lots of fun exploring messy play. We investigated the texture and properties of a variety of everyday materials such as pasta, shaving foam, gelli baff and different types of flour and pulses. We also experimented with different painting techniques. In March we will be learning about spring time. We will be going on lots of nature walks to the park to look for the changes in the plants that the warmer weather brings and hope to find lots of interesting materials to bring back to Nursery to make our spring pictures. Our book of the month will be ‘On the Farm’ which is all about colours, numbers and shapes. The Bluebell Room children would like to say goodbye and good luck to Oscar, Christopher, Francesco and Charlie who have moved to the Daffodil Room. We would also like to welcome May who is coming to play with the Bluebell Room children from the Buttercup Room. Street Nursery News Letter Derby StreetDerby Nursery Daffodil Room During the month of February we celebrated Valentines Day by making cards for our Mums and Dads . We also celebrated Shrove Tuesday by decorating pancakes. We read a new story ‘Itchy Bear’ and explored the storysack containing Itchy Bear and his friends. The Daffodil Room children would like to welcome new friends to the room; Scarlett, Christopher, Charlie and Francesco. In February we participated in lots of messy play using shaving foam, rice pudding, gelli baff and gloop. During March we are going to learn about spring and how things grow. We will be planting seeds in our garden and looking after them. We are also planning on keeping caterpillars and feeding them to enable them to grow into butterflies. In March we will celebrate St Patrick’s Day by going on a four leaf clover hunt. We will also celebrate Easter by going on a search for Easter eggs and the Easter Bunny. Page 2 Page 2 Chef Belinda’s Recipes Cod Goujons, Potato Wedges and Tartar Sauce Ingredients: Cod, Potatoes, breadcrumbs, plain flour, capers, mayonnaise, cooking oil, chilli powder, dried parsley, paprika, 1 cal oil, lemon juice, eggs Cod Goujons: prepare the cod, cut into equal strips. The following will be required: seasoned flour, egg mixture (beaten eggs) and breadcrumbs (pané). Warning it is a messy job! Coat the fish first in seasoned flour then egg mixture then coat in breadcrumbs. Goujons can be made in advance and left to firm up overnight in the fridge. Potato Wedges: Pre heat oven. Cut Thistle Room potatoes into wedges. Place in a pan of cold water and boil for 15 minutes. Try This month we would like to welcome Carmen, Ross, to stop before they get soft.
