Information All ACT scores can be sent to the college from the ACT board 1 college Visitpreplanned absence E-Script - cost 1.00 for Transcripts Valedictorian / Salutatorian Beginning with the Class of 2015 (and beyond), there will be one Valedictorian and one Salutatorian per graduating class. Early Release Must have a 2.0 GPA AND Be enrolled in a Dual Enrollment Class Or Going to Work Or Volunteering for an organization Athletics and Band English 101 & 102 3.0 GPA Cost: 402.00 plus book Must take both classes Think about : ACT score AP Language /Lit. Class Dual Enrollment Western Civilization Speech / Psychology 3.0 GPA 402.00 plus books Honor and Advanced Placement Courses How do I decide if Honor courses are for me? • Current performance • Teacher Recommendation • EXPLORE results • Personal interest, aptitude, and commitment to work hard HONORS CLASSES Must have teacher’s signatures. Only take honors classes if you have had a ‘B’ the previous honors course or an ‘A’ in the regular class Math Sequencing All Math classes must be taken in a sequence. You can not move back in your selection. Override Letter– Requires a test to be taken in May…Counseling Center KEEP IN MIND More colleges are most concerned with your GPA than curriculum They really look at ACT and GPA, then for scholarships they focus on the details of your resume. Community, Leadership, etc. REMINDERS ACT must be taken with the written portion of the test. Include 4 colleges everytime you test Scores must be sent to colleges by ACT NCAA – You must COME to the Counseling Center to request your Junior transcript be sent to NCAA LOOKING AHEAD What Should You NOT Do? Panic Assume that the college you attend is the Most Important Decision of Your Life Because it’s not. Get caught up in everyone else’s advice. Such as uncle, neighbor, mom’s best friend, sixth cousin twice removed, etc. You aren’t going to college. THEY are. Procrastinate, become lazy or apathetic Junior Year Do their best in school Course selection & grades are top 2 factors in most admissions/scholarship decisions, along with test scores Explore college options. Be creative & openminded. Look for hidden gems! Visit college campuses – in person or by Internet Take advantage of college visits to OMHS List of 8-10 college possibilities College Fair—February 12, 2016 Talk about college goals, finances, etc. For Starters and Most Importantly: Do their best in school Colleges tend to emphasize junior year, so especially do well rest of this year Stay (or become) involved in activities Don’t have to win a Nobel Prize or Grammy by the time you’re 18…BUT…do something Key is to show initiative and leadership. Junior Year Clean up your online profile; use privacy settings, and use a professional email address Plan summer internships, research projects, summer programs, etc. By the time senior year begins in August: have your college list narrowed to 6-8 and be ready to apply Keep contact information of your admission rep…they can be your greatest asset Ask yourself: Academically: Are you taking classes that challenge you appropriately? Are you doing as well as you can? Specialty or Extracurricular Activities: Activities in or out of school that you enjoy? Some activities sustained for 2+ years in high school? Opportunities for increased leadership, responsibility, or skill this year or next? IS THERE ONE PERFECT COLLEGE FOR EVERY STUDENT? NO! What this means for your college search What you DO at college matters more than the college you attend. One college is not right for everyone. There are probably several colleges where you would be equally happy & successful. Keep an open mind. So now what?
