Recognition of Research in the Senior Center Field
Call for Nominations 2013
The National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) announces its 17th Annual Research Award to
recognize outstanding research in the senior center field. The submission deadline is Friday,
March 29, 2013.
Only research published after January 1, 2010—including journal articles, dissertations,
books, research reports, etc.—pertaining to the administration, operation, or programming of
senior centers will be considered.
The research must make a substantive contribution to knowledge and understanding of the
senior center field and stimulate questions for further research in the field. In the past, areas
investigated have included volunteer services, best senior center practices, intergenerational
programs, etc. Other areas of interest to NISC include, but are not limited to:

Health promotion, evidence-based programs, wellness and prevention models
The role and function of the senior center of the future
Replicable outcome measures of senior center programs
The design of consumer-based senior center programs
The role of senior centers with civic engagement and fostering community
involvement
Individuals or organizations may be nominated, and self-nomination is encouraged. Current
NCOA/NISC paid staff or consultants are not eligible, nor will NCOA/NISC-funded research be
considered.
Nomination forms are available from the NISC Program Manager by calling 202-600-3102 or
emailing [email protected] or by visiting www.ncoa.org/nisc.
A cash award of $1,000 goes to the researcher(s), with $500 to the senior center(s) involved
with the research. In addition, a plaque will be provided to the sponsoring entity. The
researcher will present his/her research in a NISC webinar scheduled during 2013/2014.
PLEASE NOTE: Abstracts of all nominations will be posted on the NISC website and may be
featured in the monthly newsletter, Senior Center Voice.

The award will recognize outstanding research in the senior center field and
serve as a catalyst for encouraging research related to the administration,
operation, or programming of senior centers.
The NISC Research Award will be presented during a NISC event in 2013.
Individuals and/or organizations are eligible to be nominated. Multiple
nominations of the same research shall be treated as one entry.
Submissions may include journal articles, dissertations, books, research
reports, and other research documents.
Research must have been published after January 1, 2010.
Current NCOA/NISC paid staff or consultants will not be eligible for the NISC
Research Award, nor will NCOA/NISC-funded research be considered.
Self-nominations are encouraged.
Research must make a substantive contribution to knowledge and
understanding of the senior center field and stimulate questions for further
research in the field.
Potential long-term effect on public policy.
Critical usefulness for senior center practice.
Creativity and depth of analysis.
Replicability of research.
Quality of literary style, readability, and format.
Documentation:

Documentation of why the individual or organization is being nominated must
be submitted as part of the completed nomination form. Items or their
summaries will be retained by the NCOA Resource Library and may be
disseminated to NISC members.

One electronic copy of the nomination and research project must be emailed
to [email protected]. The format should be Word or PDF. Please
write “NISC Research Award” in the subject line.
Please note: Electronic copies are preferred. However, if electronic copies are
not possible, seven hard copies can be mailed along with the nomination form
to: NCOA, NISC Research Award, 1901 L Street NW, 4th Floor, Washington, DC
20036.
An electronic summary/abstract of the research project is requested for
posting on the NCOA/NISC website.

The NISC Research Award winner will be selected by the NISC Delegate
Council, a network of senior center experts from around the country.
