Helping make Doncaster
Dementia Friendly
THIS month we’ve been celebrating
the work that has been done to
date in Doncaster to help people
with dementia and their carers.
Dementia Awareness Week gave our
organisation and partners an opportunity
to showcase the many services that operate
across the borough to provide information,
advice and care.
One of those key support organisations
is the DonMentia charity, which provided an
afternoon of pampering at the Doncaster
Dementia Forum at Tickhill Road Hospital’s
Forest Gate centre. DonMentia founder
Eileen Harrington organised a therapist
offering Reiki, hand and back massages,
make up and more.
Eileen, pictured here with Pam Kitching
who attended the session and Isha Singh
from the Aurora Centre, said: “All of
those who attended had a really enjoyable
afternoon.
Lynne gives something
back after cancer
THE Macmillan Cancer Support charity
celebrated this year’s Volunteer Week by
saying a big thank you to everyone who
gives up their time to improve the lives of
people living with cancer.
A growing number of people need practical,
physical, and emotional support long after
their cancer treatment ends. Organisations like
Doncaster’s The Macmillan Living Well Service
- which is part funded by the charity - support
people affected by cancer with the help of a
group of dedicated volunteers.
Lynne Hill, who lives in Bawtry, was inspired to
volunteer following her own experience of cancer.
Lynne has been diagnosed with the disease twice,
and lost both her mother and sister to cancer.
Lynne began volunteering with the team at the
Macmillan Living Well Service - based at Balby’s
St John’s Information Centre - over four years

“When a loved one has dementia it’s
great to be able to get out of the house and
enjoy the company of others, which is what
the Dementia Forum offers,” added Eileen,
who also recently organised trips to Balby’s
Walled Garden and the Grimsby Fishing
Museum.

ago. The service provides support for local people
diagnosed with cancer.
Lynne said: “My role involves general support
for the team, I love the variety and flexibility of the
role. It could be something as simple as filing to
attending cancer awareness events.
“I love volunteering it makes me feel like I’m
doing my bit, I feel I need to give
something back because of what
I’ve been through; and the fact
I’m still here.
“My advice to anyone thinking
about volunteering is just give
it a go.
“I’m not going to sit around
feeling sorry for myself. Cancer
has taken so much from me,
but if I can get one person to be
screened who wouldn’t normally
I’ve done my job.”
Joanne O’Marr, Macmillan
Living Well Cancer Information
Service Lead, manages the
Macmillan Living Well Service,
she said: “We owe a great debt to all our
dedicated volunteers, most of them have been
motivated to give something back because of their
own cancer experience.
“We recognise that many people who have
had cancer have the knowledge and expertise to
support others going through it.”
If you and/or a loved one
has been diagnosed with cancer
you can drop into the Macmillan
Living Well Service, Monday-Friday
(08:30-16:30), call 01302 796 853
or email [email protected].
The Macmillan Living Well Service
is funded by the charity and NHS
Doncaster Clinical Commissioning
Group, in partnership with
Rotherham, Doncaster and South
Humber NHS Foundation Trust.

Dementia care in Doncaster:
We’re getting there
A NEW annual report published during this
year’s Dementia Awareness Week highlights
how far Doncaster has progressed in
improving access to services and information
for local people who are suspected of, or
have being diagnosed with, dementia.
The report – called Are we There? – reviews
the 2016/17 year and has been published by the
Doncaster Dementia Strategic Partnership, which
is a membership of statutory, non-statutory,
community and voluntary agencies, as well as
people living with dementia and their carers.
It concludes that, although much has been
achieved, there is still a lot to do as demand for
services increases, funding becomes tighter and
expectations become higher.
But there’s still plenty to celebrate around the
five key areas we’re focussing on improving:
Success at a glance
1 Pre-diagnosis information and support
The Facts
• Dementia is not a natural part of
ageing
• Dementia is caused by disease of
the brain
• It’s not just about losing your
memory
• It’s possible to live well with
dementia
• There’s more to a person than the
dementia
• Over 850,000 people in the UK
have dementia.
• Doncaster has an estimated
3,591 people aged over 65 with
dementia, with 2,767 having a
formal diagnosis.
2
• Doncaster now has over 17,000 Dementia Friends.
More people have a basic awareness of dementia
• The Doncaster Dementia Action Alliance now
has 100 members. By engaging with partner
organisations across the borough, the alliance
has become strong and is the vehicle for driving
forward dementia friendly communities.
2 Assessment and treatment
• Increase in the dementia diagnosis rate to 74.4 per
cent.
• The improved diagnosis rate follows extensive
awareness raising events and initiatives across
Doncaster.
3 Peri and post diagnosis support
• Fewer Doncaster people with dementia are
attending A&E.
• Less people are being admitted and re-admitted to
hospital with dementia and more people are being
supported effectively at home.
• There are fewer cases of unplanned respite.
4 Care homes
• Less people with dementia are being admitted to
hospital from care homes.
5 End of life
• Fewer people with dementia are dying in hospital.
• The length of time that people stay in hospital has
been maintained.

Doncaster Dementia Awards
THE 2017 Doncaster Dementia Awards took place at a
special celebration event held at Doncaster College’s
Hub during Dementia Awareness Week.
This was the second year of the awards, which are designed
to give a big pat on the back to those people, groups and
organisations that often don’t routinely get the recognition they
deserve.
Judges chose winners and highly commended for two
award categories: individual and group/organisation following
nominations by individuals and organisations.
John Stiles - son of World Cup winning footballer Nobby Stiles,
who has advanced dementia - presented the awards after giving
an emotional talk about his dad’s battle with the disease.

Keep your child safe online
SPECIALIST staff from Doncaster’s Child Sexual
Exploitation (CSE) team have been giving advice
on how to keep local young people safe online.
The CSE team, which includes staff from a
range of agencies in Doncaster, suggest a number
of simple tips for parents to follow, such as:
• Installing software on your child’s IT device to
filter inappropriate material and to monitor
what they are doing online;
• putting the computer in a place where you can
see what your child is doing online;
• reminding your children not to give out
personal information about themselves or their
family and friends; and
• talking to your children about being careful
with so called ‘friends’ online who may not
be who they think they are, and to discourage
them from meeting ‘friends’ this way.
ACT – Action
Counters Terrorism
THE recent devastating terrorist attacks in
Manchester and London have made us all
aware of the need to be vigilant as we go
about our daily lives.
You can help police keep communities
safe by reporting your concerns about
suspicious activity on 0800 789 321. Your call
could save lives.
Don’t worry about wasting our time or
getting someone into trouble. Let us decide
if the information is important. What you
tell us is treated in the strictest confidence
and is thoroughly researched by experienced
officers before, and if, any police action is
taken. No call or click will be ignored.
Be aware of what is going on around you
– of anything that strikes you as different or
unusual, or anyone that you feel is acting
suspiciously – it could be someone you know
or even someone or something you notice
when you are out and about that doesn’t
feel quite right.
Examples of suspicious activity could include
someone who:
• appears to be carrying out surveillance;
taking photos of security arrangements
for example;
• has illegal firearms or other weapons or
has shown an interest in obtaining them;
• is visiting the dark web, or ordering
unusual items online;
• has bought or hired a vehicle in
suspicious circumstances;

MAKE NOTHING HAPPEN
WE have two key monthly meetings that
members of the public are very welcome to
attend to observe how we make decisions
about local healthcare services. Both are held
at our Sovereign House headquarters and any
changes to dates or times are reported on our
website.
Governing Body: takes place at 1.00pm on the
third Thursday of the month to review our
financial position, quality issues and other
important matters. Sitting round the table are
Doncaster GPs, NHS managers, lay members
who have been recruited from the community,
and representatives from Doncaster Council
and Healthwatch Doncaster.
The agenda and discussion papers are placed
on our website – www.doncasterccg.nhs.uk - a
few days before the meeting. Members of the
public are also able to come along and ask
questions before the meeting starts. All we
ask is that if you do want to ask a question,
you contact us at least two days before the
meeting to tell us and give a summary of what
you would like to say. This is simply to give us
enough time to collate our response.
If you see or hear something that could
be terrorist related, act on your instincts
and call the police, in confidence, on
0800 789 321 or visit gov.uk/ACT
Your call could save lives.
