multiskills festival delivery pack - Barnet Partnership For School Sport

MULTISKILLS FESTIVAL PACK
The National Competition Framework for school sport provides guidelines on the
recommended level of competition for young people at each Key Stage. For young people at
Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 (years 3 and 4) the recommendation is for participation in MultiSkills Festivals.
We therefore introduce you to the ‘Multiskills Festival Pack’ developed and produced by the
North London Competition Manager Team. The pack has been developed with reference to
similar packs from other Competition Manager teams – thanks to East London, Berkshire and
Leicestershire in particular.
The pack is designed to aid SSP’s in the delivery of Multiskills Festivals to Year 1-6 pupils.
Within this pack is everything you will need to be able to confidently deliver a Multiskills
Festival. We hope that this pack will standardise the delivery of Multiskills Festivals across
North London, and most importantly save you time in the planning and preparation of a
festival.
In this pack you will find a step-by-step guide on how to run a Multiskills Festival, this guide
will point you towards using other referenced documents to ensure your festival is successful
and runs smoothly. Please feel free to use as much or as little of this pack as necessary. If
you feel there are other pieces of information missing from this resource that you would find
useful, please do not hesitate to contact your Competition Manager.
All information provided is given as a recommendation only, so feel free to adapt it to suit your
individual needs.
We look forward to seeing the Multiskills Festivals in Action, so please feel free to contact us
with any forthcoming dates or requests for support. If you have any questions or comments
please let us know.
Thank you

HOW TO RUN A MULTISKILLS FESTIVAL
One term ahead;
 Decide the venue, date and time of your festival
 Decide how many schools to invite and how many pupils they can bring (see Number
of Participants document).
 Decide how many stations you can have (see Floor Plan).
 Invite the schools (see Letter Template).
One month ahead:
 Decide which stations will feature in your festival (see Multiskills Station Cards).
 Ensure you have all the equipment required for your chosen stations/relay (see
Equipment Required on the Multi-Skills station cards)
 Decide how many Leaders you will need and provide training (see Use of Leaders).
 Chase schools who haven’t confirmed their attendance.
 Confirm festival format to schools who are attending.
One week ahead:
 Decide if your festival will be a scoring festival, and if so print out appropriate score
cards (see Score Sheets and Totals Score Sheet).
 Prepare and print paperwork (Multiskills Programme for teachers, Relevant Floor Plan
for teachers, Relevant Station Cards for leaders, Station Numbers, Monitoring and
Evaluation forms).
 Print certificates (Multiskills Participation Certificate and Multiskills Winners Certificate).
On the day:
 Re-brief leaders.
 Give out welcome documents to primary teachers.
 Give out Monitoring and Evaluation forms to all primary teachers to complete (collect
before they leave).
After the day:
 Return all completed Monitoring and Evaluation forms to your Competition Manager.
 Report all participation data to your Competition Manager.

NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS
This pack is based around the premise that the multi-skills festival is a family festival held for
individual year groups at a central secondary school venue. This assumes inviting 200 pupils
to a secondary school venue.
We recommend that there are no more than 10 pupils at each station. Therefore a festival
could require 20 (or more) stations.
This is by no means a requirement, but provides a platform around which you can tailor your
own festival.
It could be that you have
 less schools,
 more schools hence need to offer more festivals,
 intra-school festivals collated as an inter school virtual league
 facilities that can cope with very large numbers.
Whatever your individual situation, please remember that at the heart of the festival
should be the experience of the young people and therefore we recommend that there
are no more than 10 pupils at each station at any one time.
It is our assumption that a typical festival will be based at a secondary school site in a four
court sports hall. Again this is guidance rather than a rule.
If this is the case, then we would estimate the festival being operated as a 12 station circuit
with 10 pupils at each station.
If you have less pupils then reduce the number at each station, not the number of stations.
If you have more pupils, then increase the number of stations, not the number of pupils at
each station
We do not feel it is possible to offer a high quality experience for more that 120 pupils
in a four court hall. This would be 10 pupils at 12 stations.
4
Festival Timing.
With 12 stations in a four court hall;
 10 minute welcome
 7 minutes active at each station x 6
 3 minutes change around x 6
 10 minute break
 7 minutes active at each station x 6
 3 minutes change around x 6
 Presentations 20 mins
Total Festival Time = 2 hours 30 minutes.
You can keep pupils from the same school together at each station.
However, you may want to mix the groups so they each have pupils from different schools. To
do this, we advise that you use a sticker system, whereby each group wears a different
coloured sticker.
5
FLOOR PLAN
The floor plan has been produced on the assumption that your hall is the size of four
badminton courts.
We recommend that there are no more than 12 stations in a hall of this size with each station
being approximately the size of half a badminton court.
If you would like to run a festival with more than 12 stations, you will need to use a second
hall or outdoor area (preferably close to the main hall).
Alternatively, all stations may be in an outdoor area (if you can guarantee the weather!).

Dear "<Insert School Contact (PLT?) Name Here>"
"<Insert Partnership Name Here>" School Sport Partnership – Multi-Skill Festival
I am writing to offer your school the opportunity to participate in an upcoming Multi-Skill
Festival. Multi-Skills is the appropriate form of competition for children in Years1-4. The
festival will be delivered in line with the National Competition Framework.
This festival will give your pupils a chance to develop their agility, balance and co-ordination,
as well as introducing them to a variety of skills needed for sport and physical activity (ie:
throwing, catching, running, jumping, etc).
Your pupils will be given the experience of participating alongside other schools, without there
being an overall winning school. Emphasis will be placed on fun, enjoyment and learning
through sport and physical activity.
Details:
Date: "<Insert Date Here>"
Time: "<Insert Time Here>"
Venue: "<Insert Venue Here>"

USE OF LEADERS
We recommend that you use leaders from your secondary school (or year 6 pupils from
attending primary schools) to run the festival.
We recommend that you have one leader per station who runs that station and one leader per
group who shadows that group round the festival.
Therefore a 12 station festival would require 24 young leaders.
The leaders you choose do not necessarily need to have had any previous leader training as
the multiskills station cards give a full explanation of each station.
Training of leaders:
 2-4 weeks (no earlier as information may drift out of Long Term Memories!) before your
festival, spend time with your leaders going through the stations you will be running at
your festival.
 Get the leaders to set up their station and deliver them to each other.
 Ensure all safety points are considered and the leaders are confident and competent
enough to deliver the station and support the groups.
Other key points to discuss with leaders:
 Explain how the festival will work – number of schools, timings of stations etc.
 Ensure leaders know what time they need to arrive on the day of the festival.
 They will be acting as role models to the younger pupils and so should act and dress in a
professional manner and set a good example.
 They will need to lead their group and be in charge of their pupils. Voice projection will be
key to successful delivery (whistles may assist).
If you are running a large festival with a lot of groups, bear in mind that your leaders may get
tired of delivering the same station over and over.
Ensure there are sufficient breaks for the leaders as well as the pupils.
If there is time in the pre-festival training session, allow your leaders to familiarise themselves
with two stations. Leaders could then swap over to another station half way through the
festival to keep themselves motivated and enthusiastic about their activity.
8
SCORING
If you decide to collect scores at your Multiskills Festival, there are many different ways you
can go about this:
1: All stations have some form of scoring attached to them. You can collect scores for each
pupil at each station. At the end of the festival you will have an overall winning pupil. This
could possibly form part of the Gifted and Talented selection process and could indicate
which pupils are invited to a Multiskills Academy.
2: As above, but by collecting scores for each individual pupil at each station you can collate a
team score at each station. You can then present wards to the top team as opposed to
individual pupils. You could do this overall or per station.
3: Just pick one station to collect the scores from. At the end of the festival you could have an
overall winning team, or an overall winning individual for that focus activity. This could be
linked to major events at the time.
An excel spreadsheet has been produced for you to record the team scores during your
festival. This will automatically work out the points and the winning team.
LEADERS’ FAIR PLAY AWARD
In addition to participation and winners certificates, you can also ask your leaders to award
‘fair play’ stickers. Before your festival starts, ask your leaders to observe the behaviour of the
pupils, and to pick out one or two who are not necessarily the best performers, but who have
tried really hard and shown general fair play. At the end of the festival, give your leaders a
sticker each. Once all pupils are gathered for the presentation, get your leaders to stick the
stickers on their chosen pupil (make sure you avoid the same pupils being given more than
one sticker).
