Mansfield Junior Badminton Club Email: [email protected] To Parents and Carers Mansfield Junior Badminton Club As you are probably aware MJBC was announced as being one of the £1000 winners in the AVIVA Community Fund awards for 2016. There is still some work to be done to evidence compliance with the terms of the award but we should be receiving the funds shortly. This award was not only a fantastic way to raise the profile of the Club but it also brought the whole community together with everyone getting behind our entry which was amazing to see. A huge THANK YOU needs to go to everyone who voted for us, be it yourself, your family members, friends or other colleagues. We have also been successful with awards of £1000 from Notts County Council’s Sport Fund and £750 from Nottinghamshire Badminton Association. These much needed funds will be put towards both sustaining and developing the Club for the future. We continue to be most grateful to all the volunteers and parents who help run and maintain the Club but we are constantly on the look-out for extra help, particularly in areas such as: 1. Coaching and Player Development. Many of our younger players would benefit from some initial ‘one to one’ help such as ‘shuttle feeding’ and/or maintaining simple stroke rallies. This should increase enthusiasm for the sport, improve co-ordination and build confidence to be involved in games, activities and competitions. Subsequent coaching would involve developing the different strokes, footwork and tactics for competitive play. If you are interested in becoming a coach the Club will fully fund attendance at courses and training to help you with this. Typical courses might be: First steps into coaching Delivering Engaging sessions Code of Practice for coaches Safeguarding and Child Protection Badminton England level 1 (and higher) qualifications Any help you give will require the completion of a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check and the Club will pay for and give support through this process. All we would ask is that you give a little commitment back to the Club for the investment made. Mansfield Junior Badminton Club Email: [email protected] 2. Fundraising Opportunities Our aim is to keep the weekly subscription fee, which has remained at £3.50 since September 2012, as low as possible and generally this covers the hire of the courts, purchase of shuttles and coach affiliation/accreditation costs. The club coaches are constantly on the look-out for ways of gaining external funding to maintain other club activities such as the annual presentation evening and the replenishment of club shirts and equipment etc. In these austere times it is becoming increasingly difficult to secure such funding and any help or ideas for fund raising would be most welcome. 3. General administration The Club is run by a small committee and share the necessary administrative duties. It would be good to have one or two more parents on the committee, to save the grey hair brigade, and maybe bring ‘new blood’ and ‘new ideas’ to the table. One specific task which you could assist with is the management of the membership database which has to be kept up to date not only for parental contact and team selection purposes but also to provide the base data for registering members with Badminton England. 4. Website and Social Media development and maintenance As you are aware the Club has its own website (www.mjbc.org.uk) which was initially developed by Rob Marshall and latterly administered by Rachel Kingston – both parents of former club members – who now wish to relinquish these duties. We thank both of them for what they have done for the Club. The current committee have very limited experience in this area and are very grateful that Alex Cheung has ‘volunteered’ to take over these duties. With Alex’s IT background and enthusiasm we are sure this will raise the profile of the Club further. 5. Club Welfare Officer A requirement of having Premier Club status is that the Club has named designated officers for positions such as Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer etc. The role of Welfare Officer has been carried out admirably by Girish for many years but as part of the Premier Club re-accreditation process, due in March 2017, Badminton England has indicated that this position should be held by someone who is not part of the coaching team. So ……….. Do we have any volunteers out there? Any necessary training will be supported financially. Mansfield Junior Badminton Club Email: [email protected] 6. Publicity The Club’s success and future lies with its membership and the committee has a desire to maintain the Club’s profile and status as high as possible to attract new players. To some extent this has partially been achieved in the past through selected publicity and marketing opportunities and, currently, ‘taster sessions’ are being run in local primary schools. Maybe this is an area which can be developed further, e.g. articles/reports in the local press, and any help or ideas with this would be welcomed. Dates for your Diary Besides completing the NJBA league fixtures for this season, please make a note of the following dates for the Club’s restricted events: 1. 28 April 2017 The Dave Goodall Memorial competition This is a singles event for players in school year 6 or below 2. 5 May 2017 3. 19 May 2017 A doubles competition for those in school year 7 and above. Presentation Evening All Club members will be expected to take part in their respective age group event. If you think you can help with the Club’s activities in any way and would like to get involved please speak to Girish or one of the other coaches. Remember, this is YOUR Club and any extra support would be most welcome and help maintain MJBC’s position as being one of the most successful Clubs in the County. GIRISH, STEVE, TREVOR and ROB
