John Degenkolb will not return to Giant Alpecin in 2017.
Frankfurt, DE – John Degenkolb, a German road cycling professional has confirmed
that he will not return to Giant Alpecin in 2017 after prolonged negotiations with
Team Managers ended last week. "This has been a tough decision, but it has been a
thorough and deliberate process to be sure we end up in the best possible situation,"
stated John Degenkolb.
John has ridden for the Dutch team since the dissolution of HTC in 2012. He had
tremendous success at Giant, including 11 grand tour stage wins and winning both
Paris-Roubaix and Milan San Remo in 2016, putting him in the record books as one of
only a few riders to have won two monuments in a single season.
John expressed his appreciation to the team saying, "I want to thank Giant Alpecin,
especially my teammates, for supporting my development as a pro cyclist. It gives me
a lot of satisfaction to have won two monuments wearing their jersey and I will leave
with many great memories and great friends, as well," added John.
Looking to next year, John says, "We have narrowed negotiations to two teams for
next year and beyond. My next contract will be about much more than money. Besides
considering the best team fit, it will also be about image rights, my protection as a
sportsman, and other details which have not historically been part of rider contract
negotiations."
John will finalize his new team by the end of this year’s Tour de France, and cycling
fans can expect an announcement in early August.
