COOLING DOWN
AFTER RUNNING
WHY YOU NEED TO
COOL DOWN
Like warming up, cooling down is an
essential part of running. While you might
just feel like dropping on the couch after
a run, you’ll be thankful later for a proper
cool-down, which can reduce muscle
stiffness and soreness.
Cooling down consists of about 5 to 10
minutes of relaxed jogging or walking at
the end of your race or training session.
Basically, the more vigorous your running
session, the more your body has to cool
down.

HERE’S WHY YOU NEED TO
INCLUDE COOLING DOWN
INTO YOUR TRAINING
ROUTINE:
PREVENT DIZZINESS
The most important reason for cooling
down is that a gentle jog will gradually
bring your heart rate back to a resting
state. If you just stop running suddenly,
the muscles stop but your heart does not
adjust as quickly. It will continue to pump
blood at a high rate which will pool or
collect in the legs, leaving other areas of
your body lacking blood, for example your
brain. This is why some people feel dizzy
after a long run.
REDUCING MUSCLE SORENESS
A cool-down will also counter the
tendency of muscles to tighten after
exercise. In many cases it will reduce
muscle stiffness after running, more
formally known as Delayed Onset Muscle
Soreness.

walk along Brian Statham Way, Warwick Road, and Sir
Matt Busby Way. This Metrolink stop is less than a 10
minute walk from the race village.
2. From Exchange Quay Metrolink stop (Eccles and
Media City UK service), walk along Trafford Road and
Trafford Wharf Road. This Metrolink stop is less than a
10 minute walk from the race village.
3. From Trafford Bar Metrolink stop (East Didsbury

• Check in your bag, ensuring that you have securely
attached the baggage tag that was issued with your race
number. You will need your race number to claim your
bag from the marquee at the end of the race.
The baggage storage marquee will be manned for the
duration of the event, please don’t leave anything valuable
or fragile in your bag.
We do not supply you with a bag – please use your own

• There will be toilets on the course at each of the aid
stations, and at the refuge points. Out of respect for the
local residents and businesses please use these and not
a handy bush or tree.
• Make sure your race number is securely fixed (this has
your timing chip on so don’t forget it). You will not be able
to race without a race number.
• The race starts promptly at 09:00. See page 18 for start
line information.
There will be marshals to help guide you from the main car

The start
•If you are signed up with an ASICS pacer, find your pace
team leader. They will be on the right hand side of the
road wearing a big flag on their back, with their pace
finish time printed on the flag. Make sure you cross
the start and finisher line close to your pacer for
accurate timing.
•Be at the start area before 9:00. The start line is a walk of
about 600 metres (10 minutes) from the race village, so
please leave time to get there.
•The route from the race village will be clearly marked and
there will be marshals to guide you. There will be two
ways to get to the start area – one for runners with a time
of less than 4 hours, and one for runners with a time of
more than 4 hours, plus the relay teams.
•Find your start zone, which is colour coded to match your
race number. People with similar estimated finish times
are grouped together by colour. These zones are marked
with large signs. Please be realistic about your expected
finish time and go to the right area. This reduces the
chances of bunching and accidents at the start of the
race. Line up here ready to start.
•Any discarded clothing will be collected once the start
area is clear of runners. If you are discarding clothing,
please consider your fellow runners and throw the items
to the side of the road.
•Your timing chip will activate as you cross the start line so
please don’t worry about being near the front, or that
others have started the race ahead of you. Chip times will
be published in the results alongside gun times.
•Remember, don’t overestimate your pace, if you set off
too fast you are very likely to struggle later in the race.
•Relay teams start at 09:30 and wheelchair entries start
at 08:55.
GO! Have a great race!
ASICS pace team
A great team of pace runners is available to help you achieve your goal finish time.
Pacers will run the following times: 3:00, 3:15, 3:29, 3:30, 3:45, 3:58, 3:59, 4:00, 4:15, 4:30, 4:45, 5:00.
There will be 3 pacers for the 4:00 hour runners: 1 at 3:58, 1 at 3:59 and 1 at 4:00 pace. This is to spread you
out along the course and make running more comfortable for you and your fellow runners.

Metrolink relay teams
There are two relay event options in 2015 – the half and half, and the 4 person relay. This section provides information about
both of these events.
The first runner – all relays
The start time for the relay race is 09:30 after the main field has left. Please congregate behind the main field at the top of
Warwick Road and follow the main field until you get to the start line – do not start with the main field of individual runners or
your team will be disqualified. All of the start points are within 2 km of a Metrolink tram stop.
We have agreed with Metrolink that relay runners (only) can travel on the tram free of charge, to and from your leg of the
course, using your race number as your ticket – it has the Metrolink logo.
All other relay runners – start and transport arrangements
The other runners in the team will need to make their own way to the designated start points on the route.
The start points are:
•Half and half
Stamford Street, Altrincham
•4 person relay
Runner B – Sale United FC, Crossford Bridge at the junction of the A56 and Dane Road, Sale

Baggage arrangements for relay teams
You have a couple of options:
Runner A – give your bag to runner B to take to the
changeover point
Runner B – give your bag to runner C to take to the
changeover point
Runner C – give your bag to runner D to take to the
changeover point
Runner D - leave your bag in the baggage tent, in your car,
or with one of your spectator supporters
There are areas at each of the changeover points where
you can leave baggage, and there will be a supply of water
at these points for runners who are finishing.
Alternatively, if none of you wish to have bags at the
changeover points, you are welcome to leave them in
the baggage tent in the race village.

fundraising go further
Whether your fundraising is at the start line or on the final stretch,
Virgin Money Giving can help you raise more.
We’re the official fundraising website for the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon.

Timing
The route is on closed roads, and is the flattest marathon
course in the UK. Mile markers will be positioned at each
mile and kilometre markers every 5km along the course.
Digital clocks (showing the GUN TIME) will be positioned
at the 10km, 10 mile, halfway and 20 mile points so that
you can check how you are doing. There are also split
timing points where your time will be recorded. All the
digital clocks on the route and at the finish line will show
the elapsed event time, from the gun start time. Individual
chip times will be available via a live web link on
www.greatermanchestermarathon.com.
Please be aware of any instructions from marshals on the
route and be aware of any emergency vehicles that may
need to use the route.
Water stations and nutrition
There will be 13 water stations on the route. All water
stations will have supplies of iceni 330ml sports
cap bottles.
Myprotein will supply an isotonic drink at three stations on
the course and an ENER:GEL at mile 19, both caffeine
and non-caffeine. Toilet facilities will be adjacent to each
water station. There are medical facilities at some water
stations, and mobile medical services cover the rest of
the course. Vaseline will be available at each medical
station should you need it.

In an attempt to keep the route as clear as possible for
the safety of your fellow runners, we have ‘drop zones’.
These are areas where there are more robust measures in
place to manage the waste. We ask you to use the drop
zone around each water station in order to be considerate
to other runners, and local residents. If you carry your
bottle/gel wrapper beyond the drop zone, please try to
keep hold of it until you either reach the next drop zone or
a marshal.
Medical support
In the event that you become unwell during the race,
medical support is available along the route. British Red
Cross medical staff will be positioned at some of the
water stations, in the race village, and at the three refuge
points on the second half of the route.
Refuge points are indoor areas with medical personnel,
hot drinks and energy provisions. You may choose to
rest here for a few minutes before continuing. Buses will
be based here to take you back to the race village if you
pull out.
Refuge points are at miles 12, 14, 18 and 23.
If you do need medical attention during the race, and are
able to, then please make your way to the next refuge
point where someone will be able to help you and locate a
first aider. If you can’t do that then move to the side of the
road and ask a fellow runner to please alert a marshal
(these are placed at regular intervals) who will then
summon first aid for you. Arrangements can then be
made to take you back to the race village.
Remember to complete the emergency contact details
on the back of your race number as this will be used
if required.
Please don’t feel you have to continue because of
reasons such as sponsorship money. Your overall
wellbeing is more important – and there is always
next year!
Gtrmanchestermarathon
25
What to do if you drop out
Please tell a marshal if you need to drop out. This is for
your safety, and will save unnecessary concern for your
loved ones, and the organisers. If you do need to
withdraw from the race, please try and make your way
to the nearest refuge point and we will arrange for you
to be taken back to the race village.
If you cannot get to a refuge point, please inform the
nearest marshal and they will contact the control centre
to make the necessary arrangements.
Slower runners
We have an agreed road closure plan in place up to
15:00, giving you up to 6 hours to complete your
marathon. This works out at approximately 13min 40sec
mile pace. If you do slow down you may be asked to run
as a pedestrian on the pavement observing the Highway
Code. We want you to finish the race and the marshals
clearing the course will give you every encouragement
to do so.
Earphones and headphones
There will be a fantastic array of entertainment on the
course and a great atmosphere, so you don’t need your
own music. However we have listened to you and there
is no specific rule from UK Athletics other than if you
are running for a prize you are not allowed to wear
headphones. Anyone who is not running for a prize is now allowed
to wear headphones.
If you do wear headphones PLEASE be considerate to
your fellow runners. Wearing headphones DOES impair
your hearing and there is every chance that you will not
be able to hear important instructions, emergency
services, or a fellow runner. If you must wear in ear
headphones, please leave one out – you never know,
you might enjoy the atmosphere and the entertainment!

Entertainment
The ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon is full of community spirit and has a festive atmosphere. There will be
entertainment in the race village and along the course. We hope that it will keep you going and motivated, and
that spectators will enjoy it too. Besides bands and singers drawn from the local community, there will be a
number of cheering points along the route, where charities and sponsors will be out in force cheering runners on.
Keep an eye out for them all, because after the race you will have the chance to vote for the one you enjoyed
the most. The event organisers are donating two £500 prizes to the local communities – one for Best
Entertainment on the Course and one for Most Supportive Neighbourhood as voted for by the runners. So,
please try to remember who made your race the most memorable. Confirmed entertainers for the route are:
Sale Brass Band, The Brook, Little Belters, Trinity Methodist Choir, Rock Choir, Samuel Brooks, The Life Centre,
Greater Manchester Fire Service, Loose Change, Frank Sidebottom’s Army, Wellington Street Stompers,
Gorgeous Gorse Hill, Pure Gym, Loud and Proud cheerleaders and Capital FM.

Acceptable behaviour
Each individual has the right to respect and personal
dignity at the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon. This
includes runners, spectators, and the multitude of staff and
groups attending this event. Insulting or abusive behaviour
will not be tolerated, and anyone behaving this way will be
asked to leave the event. If this applies to a runner, they
will be disqualified.
UK Athletics official rules
The ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon operates under
UKA rules, a copy of which is available at:

The finish
Well done – you’ve done it!
The finish line is at the end of Sir Matt Busby Way next to
the race village. As you cross the line your timing chip will
trigger your final finish time.
Make the most of your moment of glory, and FinisherPix
photographers and spectators will be there to share it
with you.
Check out the race results and photography options on
page 28 for information on how to access your results
and free photograph.
When you have crossed the line you will be directed
through the finish chute and on into the race village.
You will be offered a space blanket, water, a Myprotein
Whey Protein Plus shake and receive your finishers’ medal
and t-shirt. Erdinger Alkoholfrei will also be offering you a
refreshing isotonic recovery drink after the finish line.
We would like to move you through the immediate finish
line area as quickly as possible. This is for your safety and
for those athletes completing the race around you.
