NEWS & VIEWS Local architect in the running for industry service award Solid foundations will give you peace of mind Craig Delaney, Managing Director Long Island Homes W HAT a great year to be building a brand new home! Like all new year projects it’s important to start with a great plan, a solid foundation, when considering building a new home. Investing in the foundations that your wonderful new home will be built on is a key part of any plan and a discussion that you must have. Different areas mean different soil types, which lead to the concrete slab of the home having to be designed to suit the individual conditions of that particular block of land, rather than just a suburb or land estate. With recent rains, drainage is a key point that will need to be considered, along with how your new home slab will be supported under the ground. Adding some beautiful trees around the home will also have an effect on the balance of moisture in the ground, along with how much moisture is already around the home. The good people at the CSIRO have written some excellent brochures on how your brand new home should be looked after. Just as we service our cars on a regular basis to keep them in good condition, we need to make the same investment in what’s arguably our biggest investment – our home. Too often homes become a “set and forget” for some people thinking it will withstand anything that’s thrown at it but, of course, on some occasions mother nature has different ideas. So be prepared and plan so you can enjoy your new home with the peace of mind that you have ticked all the boxes. 46 GT HOME An Anglesea home designed by Torquay-based Seeley Architects, who have been short-listed for an industry service award. The award was developed by the Architectural Registration Board of Victoria to promote excellence in service provided by registered architects across the state. As a testament to the high standards and professionalism provided along the Surf Coast, Seeley Architects, a Torquay-based multi awardwinning practice was short-listed by the board. It was one of the top three architectural practices considered for the honour, which specifically focuses on the architect’s ability to meet the clients’ needs through communication, management and contractual fulfilment. This is the second time Seeley Architects have been short-listed for this award, being credited as a top four practice in 2007. Director David Seeley says he is grateful for the recognition, as it reflects the company’s philosophy of “providing clients with high quality design and professional services”. – JEMMA RYAN Villawood team gets behind local hero Cadel for his farewell race STAFF at Villawood Properties were among the thousands of fans supporting local hero Cadel Evans as he rode his final race as a pro cyclist last weekend. Villawood Properties’ executive director Rory Costelloe met with Cadel ahead of the Great Ocean Road Race named in his honour. The elite race was the first event of its kind in Australia and the format delivered high excitement and intense competition. Rory, a strong advocate of Geelong and a keen cyclist himself, says he and his team have been passionate supporters of Cadel throughout his long and successful career. “We’ve changed our giant corten steel letters on the Geelong Ring Road to read ‘GO CADEL’ ahead of all of his big races including the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia, and now the Great Ocean Road Race,” he says. Rory says thousands of people see the letters every day as they drive to and from the Surf Coast. “Cadel is a wonderful icon for the Geelong region and it’s fantastic to see so many passionate Geelong people here in support of him and his amazing career,” he says. The developers have continued to demonstrate their commitment to healthy, active communities through various initiatives and there were plenty of keen cyclists in the Villawood Properties team who participated in or cheered on the inaugural race. – JEMMA RYAN Villawood Properties Executive Director Rory Costelloe with Cadel Evans before his final race as a pro cyclist.
