Mission: Astronomy Tic-Tac-Toe

Mission: Astronomy Tic-Tac-Toe
Continuing on with your mission training as an astronomer, it is important that you become an expert in
additional areas. To assist with this, please complete three activities listed below. You may choose any 4
activities listed below, they do not need to be in the traditional “4 in a row”.
1.
How can you find a
planet? Complete the
activity to find out.
5. Examine the relationship
between the sun’s core
and life on Earth.
Decide on a creative way
to present what you have
learned. Think about
your strongest or
weakest (challenge
yourself) intelligence if
you are struggling with
an idea.
9. What are important
details about stars that
astronomers need to
know? Identify and
describe/show the
different types of stars,
and explain how they
relate to the life cycle of
a star.
2. Explain the different
units of measurement
used to measure
distance in space.
Include an astronomical
unit and light-year.
What other units can
you find? How creative
can you be in showing
what you learned?
6. Make a model to show
the motion of planets by
completing the activity.
3. Explore the different
types of galaxies,
providing information
and a visual
representation of each
one.
10. Research and explain
or show the difference
between a comet,
asteroid, and a
meteoroid
11. Make a model of the
expanding universe by
completing the activity.
7. What can you infer
from a model of the
Milky Way Galaxy?
Complete the activity
to find out.
4. Identify 3 of the major
constellations and the
story/myth behind them.
In addition, please
Identify which group of
people named the
stars, why the stars
appear to move in the
sky, and why we are
able to see stars.
8. Explore auroras and
create a project using
one of your strongest
multiple intelligences to
teach to other students.
12. Explore and report on
the force of gravity,
temperature, size, the
composition of the
atmosphere and
surface, the length of
the orbit, and any
unique information
about each planet and
the sun.
The activities above include a variety of ways to show your understanding of these essential astronomy
concepts. By completing a tic-tac-toe, you will have completed three different types of activities to demonstrate
your understanding. Information about these topics is available in your Science textbook, but additional
resources should be used, as well. The types of products you will create include:
 Reading and an explanation with pictures
 Making a model or way to teach about the concept using one of your strongest multiple intelligences
 Completing a pre-designed activity
 Creating an experiment to demonstrate the concept using the Scientific Method
