⃰ Nook/Adobe Digital Editions
Here are some common error messages and problems people deal with when using the Nook and
Adobe Digital Editions. These are not the only problems that come up. If you have other errors
please check the help desk at Overdrive. http://help.overdrive.com/adobe-digital-editions
Some of these solutions were taken directly from Overdrive’s help site.
Setting up an Adobe Digital Account:
When you create the Adobe account, you must do so with the same e-mail address and the same
password as on your Nook, which is always the same as your Barnes and Noble account. They
report that if you use a different e-mail (and perhaps also password, though I use different
passwords for my ADE & B&N accounts), you may have trouble authorizing your books. See
below for a fix of this problem.
Authorizing the eReader:
Best practices for side-loading a title from Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) to a Nook or other
eReader include taking care to authorize the device on the PC before attempting to download that
first title. If the Nook is authorized after the title is downloaded and opened in ADE, the file
may not transfer properly.
Always make sure to download an ePub file
Don’t download audio book files or kindle. If the file is not opening up in ADE this could be the
reason.
Error message if you are trying to download an eBook to a second computer
An eBook can only be downloaded to one device. If you have downloaded it to a computer and
then decide you want to read it on your nook, this error message will pop up.

Here are some common error messages and problems people deal with when using the Kindle.
These are not the only problems that come up. If you have other errors please check the help
desk at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200127470
or call the automated customer service system at 1-866-321-8851
Some of these solutions were taken directly from Amazon’s website.
You must know your Amazon account information
When downloading to the Kindle you will need to have your account information ready. The
username and password is for the specific account your Kindle is attached to. If you give
another person’s information, the library book will download to a different Kindle.
If you haven’t activated your Kindle and set it up with your Amazon account, you will need to
do so before you can start downloading books.
Returning books early/deleting from library v. leaving it in library to preserve
bookmarks
Even after your due date a title will stay on your device till you manually delete it. You will
need to follow the steps below to delete the title. The first steps show you how to remove just
from your device the second steps show you how to remove the title from your account.
To remove content from your Kindle:
1. If you are not already on the Home screen, press the "Home" button.
2. Underline the item you want to remove with the 5-way controller.
3. Move the controller to the left and select "Remove from device."
To change your mind, move the 5-way up or down to cancel.
Permanently remove an item from Your Kindle Library and Archived Items
All books you purchase or borrow are automatically backed up on Amazon.com. When you
remove a book from your Kindle, it appears in your archived Items. To permanently remove a
book, first click on Manage your Kindle then locate the item you wish to delete from the Your
Kindle Library list. Filter your view or search your library to quickly find the item.
Click the Actions button and choose "Delete from library" to permanently remove the title item
from your account and archived Items. If you have not already deleted the title from your Kindle
you will need to sync your device after you do this. Then the title will be removed from your
device.
Note: that after the title is removed from your archive; you will no longer have access to redownload this title unless you re-purchase it or re-borrow it. If you have bookmarks on this title
or any saved information these will be deleted forever.
Forcing device to sync manually and wirelessly
To manually sync your content on your Kindle E Ink device, select the Menu button then "Sync
to Furthest Page Read."
To manually sync your content on your Kindle Fire, tap the Quick Settings icon, then the Sync
icon.
Always return to the Home screen on your device when you're finished reading to avoid syncing
errors.
Connecting with Wi-Fi
Your Kindle can connect to Wi-Fi networks or hotspots that use the 802.11b, 802.11g, or
802.11n (in B or G compatibility mode) standard. Kindle does not connect to enterprise or adhoc Wi-Fi networks (networks that allow peer-to-peer connections without a wireless access
point). Keep in mind that you must be within range of one or more Wi-Fi networks in order to
connect to one.
Manually Adding a New Wi-Fi Network
1. Press the Home button, then press the Menu button.
2. Navigate to "Settings" by moving the 5-way controller down, then press the 5-way
controller to select.
3. Select "view" next to "Wi-Fi Settings" to display a list of detected Wi-Fi networks. You
may have to wait a moment as your Kindle detects networks in range. Kindle
automatically scans for available Wi-Fi networks at periodic intervals. To rescan for
available networks at any time, select "rescan."
4. Select "connect" to connect to a network. If you see a lock symbol next to "connect," the
network requires a password to connect.
5. If necessary, enter the Wi-Fi network password, and choose "submit." Press the Symbol
key to enter numbers or characters not present on the Kindle keyboard.
Once you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, Kindle automatically connects to it again whenever
that network is in range. If more than one previously used network is in range, your Kindle
automatically connects to the network that was most recently used.
If your Kindle fails to connect to the new Wi-Fi network, it will display an "unable to connect"
message. You can try manually entering all the network information for the Wi-Fi network by
choosing "set up network" when you see the "unable to connect" message. If you don't know the
network information, try connecting to a different network, or contact the network's
administrator.
Tip: Once your Kindle connects to a Wi-Fi network, that network displays "forget" next to it in
the list of available networks. Selecting "forget" disconnects your Kindle from that Wi-Fi
network and also prevents Kindle from automatically connecting to it in the future.
Still can't connect?
1. Move within range of your router.
Where available, go to the room where the router is located.
2. Ensure wireless is on.
Ensure that wireless is enabled by pressing the Menu button and selecting "Turn
Wireless On."
3. Update your software.
Make sure you have the latest software version available installed on your Kindle.
4. Ensure your router is functioning correctly and has an Internet connection.
You can verify your router is functioning correctly by checking that other devices
can connect via Wi-Fi to your router. If other devices are also unable to connect,
try restarting your router or modem by disconnecting the power cord for 30
seconds.
If your router does not have an internet connection, your Kindle will not be able
to access the Kindle store, download content or use the experimental browser
even if the Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi.
5. Restart your Kindle.
If other devices are able to connect, try restarting your Kindle by pressing Home
> Menu > Settings > Menu and select "Restart."
If your Kindle still isn't connected, contact the person who set up your Wi-Fi
network, your Internet service provider, or the manufacturer of your Wi-Fi router
for assistance.
6. Don't see your Wi-Fi network?
If you do not see your desired Wi-Fi network, try refreshing your list of Wi-Fi
networks by selecting "Rescan" on the Wi-Fi settings page.
If you have opted to hide your Wi-Fi network in your router settings, you will not
see your network listed in your available networks. Learn more about manually
connecting your Kindle to Wi-Fi.

Kindle app:
Do not recommend the Kindle app to patrons. Due to Penguin and the need for a USB
connection to download, many people are not able to download with this app if they have an
iPad. It is better to recommend the Overdrive Media Console app. See link above.
If a patron accidently checks out the Kindle eBook they can download the Kindle app to read it
so they don’t have to go through the holds list again
OR
Offer to login to their Overdrive account, download in your own Amazon account and return it
for them so they can then check out the correct format.

iPad – Accessibility Features
iPad has features to help those with hearing, vision, physical and motor skills.
http://www.apple.com/accessibility/ipad/vision.html
Android – Accessibility Features (http://developer.android.com/about/versions/android-4.0-highlights.html)
A variety of new features greatly enhance the accessibility of Android 4.0 for blind or visually
impaired users. Most important is a new explore-by-touch mode that lets users navigate without
having to see the screen. Touching the screen once triggers audible feedback that identifies the
UI component below; a second touch in the same component activates it with a full touch event.
The new mode is especially important to support users on new devices that use virtual buttons in
the System Bar, rather than dedicated hardware buttons or trackballs. Also, standard apps are
updated to offer an improved accessibility experience. The Browser supports a script-based
screen reader for reading favorite web content and navigating sites. For improved readability,
users can also increase the default font size used across the system.
The accessibility experience begins at first setup — a simple touch gesture during setup
(clockwise square from upper left) activates all accessibility features and loads a setup tutorial.
Once accessibility features are active, everything visible on the screen can be spoken aloud by
the standard screen reader.
