the surface for cracking and

was rated nine, which is an excellent rating," he said.
Both Route 85A and Crow
Ridge Road are on the department's list of high-priority intersections, VanKeuren said. The
state investigates after any fatality, and it did after Maher's.
"Both Crow Ridge Road and
Route 85A looked good after our
investigation," VanKeuren said.
The state's Department of Motor Vehicles reports accident
statistics to the Department of
Transportation every few years.
VanKeuren said the last report
was for the years 1994 to 1999,
and there were four accidents at
the intersection in that time.
"It is not a high-accident area,"
he said. "Five thousand vehicles
a day travel [Route 85A] in each
direction; four accidents are not
many at all.... The signage is
good [near the intersection], and
it's well-lit. We have a street light
at the intersection."
VanKeuren added that he
thought Crow Ridge , Road

well.

The notice was filed on Oct. 29,
said Jim Plastiras, spokesman for
Michael Breslin, Albany County's
executive. Plastiras would not
comment on details of the notice.
David Maher was traveling
north on Crow Ridge Road on
July 28 when he lost control of
his car where the road intersects
Route 85A. Maher then struck a
guardrail and a tree.
"Excessive speed was a major
contributing factor," Investigator
Michael Monteleone of the Albany County Sheriffs Department told The Enterprise in August. He said there were no signs
of drug or alcohol use involved in
the accident,
Maher's passenger, William J..
Bush, 23, of Littleton, Colo., was
taken to Albany Medical Center
at the time and treated for head
injuries.
Maher, a 1997 Bethlehem High
School graduate, was a student
at Hudson Valley Community
College.
Maher had an impact on many
in his community. Over 600 people attended his wake, making it
the second biggest wake Applebee's Funeral Home in Delmar
has ever had.
In January of 2001, another
accident occurred at the same intersection. Shannon Peek, 18,
was traveling east on Route 85A
at a high speed when she crossed
